About Tranquil Mist Residence
Tranquil Mist is a residential interior design for a 92.5 square meter apartment in Taiwan, created for a retired couple. Curves are integrated into the walls and ceilings in balanced proportions. Plaster lamps follow the ceiling curves and create a seamless visual flow. Recessed lighting adds brightness and reduces visible boundaries. The original four-room layout was reorganized, and closets form a loop circulation with two master bedrooms that can be opened or separated as needed. Low saturation blue, gray and white create a calm and restful setting.
Chien-Hwan Wang's Tranquil Mist Residence exemplifies a sophisticated approach to contemporary residential interior design that draws upon the legacy of mid-century modernism while incorporating sensibilities refined through Scandinavian functionalism and the contemplative spatial aesthetics prevalent in contemporary residential architecture across diverse design cultures, the work demonstrates considerable technical accomplishment in its orchestration of neutral tonal relationships where warm grays of varying values create spatial depth and volumetric definition without recourse to chromatic complexity, suggesting a designer confident in the expressive potential of achromatic restraint, the integration of architectural lighting within ceiling planes and millwork reveals meticulous attention to illumination as both functional necessity and compositional element, with layered light sources generating ambient foundation, architectural accent, and focal emphasis that collaboratively model the interior volume and guide visual attention through the open-plan environment, the millwork design exhibits notable refinement in its flush detailing, concealed hardware, and volumetric massing that establishes substantial presence while maintaining visual quietude through surface continuity and chromatic unity with surrounding wall planes, the composition achieves spatial legibility through strategic placement of furnishing elements that define functional zones without physical barriers, allowing sight lines to extend across the full depth of the space and thereby generating perceptual spaciousness that belies the moderate proportions typical of contemporary residential construction, the material palette demonstrates judicious restraint, selecting finishes that offer subtle textural variation through carpet weave pattern, fabric upholstery texture, and probable wood grain figuring while avoiding competing visual incident that might fragment the compositional whole, this work appears to engage fundamental questions about domestic space in contemporary life, exploring how residential environments might balance competing desires for openness and definition, visual interest and repose, material presence and spatial clarity, the design seems to propose that rigorous formal discipline and chromatic restraint need not result in coldness or austerity but can instead generate environments of considerable warmth through careful attention to proportion, lighting quality, and tactile material character, the window wall treatment with its translucent drapery suggests thoughtful mediation between interior privacy and exterior connection, filtering daylight to gentle diffused quality while maintaining visual separation from the world beyond, one might observe how this interior creates contemplative atmosphere not through overt ornamentation or decorative gesture but through the patient calibration of spatial relationships, surface qualities, and luminous conditions, inviting consideration of how domestic environments shape daily experience through subtle perceptual dimensions that often escape conscious notice yet profoundly influence our sense of ease, focus, and wellbeing within the spaces we inhabit.

- Unique Properties
- The designer installed plaster lamps to complement the ceiling's curves. These stalactite-like fixtures break from traditional formats, creating a seamless visual flow. Curves are thoughtfully integrated into the walls and ceilings in balanced proportions. Combined with recessed lighting, they enhance natural brightness and create a boundary-free effect. The expanded view mirrors the lush greenery outside. Horizontally and vertically extending curves subtly modify ceiling beams, minimizing height differences and ensuring smooth spatial transitions.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The site is a 92.5 square meters new apartment. It was originally four rooms. The space is fully adjusted except for the toilet and kitchen which are fixed in position. In terms of circulation planning, key changes include the double master bedroom. The designer utilized closets to create a loop-like circulation to separate the sleeping areas. The two seniors can choose to open or separate their private spaces as needed to support their independent and uninterrupted lifestyles. The 'master bedroom with separate beds' is a perfect fit for the couple's lifestyle.

- Production Technology
- Materials: Mamo stone, braided carpet, curved molding boards, crossroad bricks, glass tiles, environmentally friendly water-based latex paint, rattan weaving, tiles, KD panels.
The color scheme is pure. Low saturation blues with gray and white create neutrality and comfort. The pastel color scheme is designed to satisfy the elderly's desire for aesthetic sophistication. Avoiding overly bright or eye-catching colors ensures that the entire space looks and feels relaxing. - Design Challenge
- The main difficulty was to achieve a balance between functionality and aesthetics within the limited space. The original layout was a four-room, which needed to be drastically reorganized to adapt to the living needs of the occupants. In particular, the fixed location of the toilet and kitchen restricted the adjustment of other areas. The designer referred to the example of Japanese senior housing to create the most flexible layout. In addition, sufficient open space to achieve good lighting and ventilation, which posed an additional challenge in terms of circulation and planning.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in March 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The residents are highly satisfied with the remodeled space. They particularly appreciate the circulation plan and the fact that the double master bedroom gives them more freedom to choose between open and isolated private areas without interfering with each other. At 70 years old, they are at the age of free choice. They dare to pursue and express what they want. The cozy color scheme and quiet living space are both beautiful and practical, allowing them to start their retirement life.
- Research
- The project, 'Tranquil Mist,' is designed to create a tranquil and healing atmosphere, much like distant mountains. Designed for a retired couple, the space incorporates curves and smooth lines to soften sharp edges, symbolizing harmony and continuity in life. These fluid shapes resemble clouds and waves, casting dynamic light and shadows that echo the natural landscape outside. The design fosters a deep connection with nature, offering a serene retreat where the couple can embrace the peaceful rhythm of retirement.
- Inspiration
- The owners are a retired couple. As their life experience becomes abundant, they have different thinking about the positioning of their home. The designer used natural and fluid elements, such as curves, to create an atmosphere of slowness and simplicity. Many curved walls serve as a medium for sight. The project emphasizes circulation and layout adjustments to meet the lifestyle and schedule of the elderly, ensuring comfort and functionality.
