About Satin Hair Salon
Satin Hair is a Korean-style hair salon in Taiwan. The interior covers 198.3 square meters on two floors and includes a waiting area, a hairdressing area, a hair washing area, a bar area, a rest area and a meeting room. A glass door and floor-to-ceiling windows make the space bright and open. A large oval lighting fixture marks the center of the hairdressing area. White painted iron parts form an interlocking mesh over the curved logo wall. Terrazzo flooring, warm wood grain and beige gray tones create a calm and soft atmosphere.
Within the evolving landscape of contemporary commercial interior design, particularly in the specialized domain of personal care and wellness environments, Chiun Ju interior design's Satin Hair Salon demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of spatial narrative and atmospheric construction through architectural gesture and material restraint. The design engages traditions of ceremonial procession and threshold experience, establishing a carefully choreographed sequence of arched portals that guide movement and vision through the salon environment while creating distinct zones of activity and repose without resorting to hard spatial division, a strategy resonant with both classical architectural precedent and contemporary open-plan hospitality design. The compositional achievement centers on the commanding suspended circular luminaire, a bold sculptural gesture that functions simultaneously as wayfinding element, atmospheric anchor, and symbolic representation of the salon's identity, demonstrating how lighting can transcend mere utility to become the defining spatial and experiential element of an interior environment. The material palette exhibits disciplined restraint characteristic of Nordic and Japanese design philosophies, limiting the range to warm neutrals, natural wood, and strategic metallic accents, a deliberate chromatic economy that allows subtle variation in tone and texture to register with clarity while maintaining visual coherence across the expansive space. Technical execution reveals particular accomplishment in the integration of multiple lighting systems, the precision detailing of custom millwork and cabinetry, and the seamless transition between flooring materials from what appears to be terrazzo or composite stone in the entry threshold to warm wood planking in the main salon floor, transitions that delineate functional zones while maintaining visual continuity. The arched openings themselves represent a noteworthy formal decision, their traditional silhouette suggesting classical architectural heritage while their minimal detailing and pristine finish align with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities, creating a dialogue between historical reference and present-day simplification that invites contemplation of design lineage and evolution. Thematically, the salon explores concepts of transformation, care, and personal renewal through spatial metaphor, the progression through successive arched thresholds suggesting ritual passage and the transition from everyday experience to specialized service environment, while the emphasis on natural light, organic materials, and gentle illumination communicates values of wellness, authenticity, and mindful attention. The work appears to reference both the grand ceremonial spaces of classical architecture with their enfilades and axial processions, and the intimate scaled warmth of residential interiors, achieving a hybrid typology appropriate to contemporary service environments that seek to balance professionalism with approachability, efficiency with experiential richness. One might observe how the careful calibration of scale, proportion, and material creates an environment that honors both the functional requirements of salon operation and the psychological needs of clients seeking not merely grooming services but moments of respite, transformation, and self-care within thoughtfully designed spatial experience.

- Unique Properties
- The glass door and large floor-to-ceiling windows provide the ultimate transparency, making the space seem even more spacious and bright. The highlight is the giant oval lighting fixture in the center of the haircutting area, which reflects the beauty of balance. The large curved logo wall creates a perfect curve. White spray-painted iron parts outline a mesh of interlocking lines to cover it, enriching the layers on the wall. The terrazzo floor is both vintage and trendy. The designer broke away from the established framework and mindset to shape a unique and distinctive look.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The venue has a total area of 198.3 square meters and consists of two floors. The layout is divided into a waiting area, hairdressing area, designer's rest area, hair washing area, bar area, and a meeting room. The semi-open plan balances integrity and independence. The doorless arch forms the boundary between different areas, intuitively guiding the route amplifying the space, and blurring the borders. The first-floor area is deliberately not filled with walls to add a sense of lightness and maintain good lighting and ventilation.

- Production Technology
- Materials: iron pieces, baking paint, wood grain flooring, terrazzo, etc. Beige gray is used as the base. Its almost pure white but slightly different color tone reveals a stress-free atmosphere. The warmth of the wood flooring enhances the natural comfort. The ubiquitous ironwork is covered with white spray paint to preserve its nature and to give it a soft yet strong effect, adding a customized touch to the commercial space.
- Design Challenge
- The venue is in a 35-year-old building. The designer made some changes to the layout to meet the salon's business needs. For example, the staircase connecting the first and second floors was poorly designed, so the width of the staircase was increased to 150 centimeters to reduce the bulkiness. The curvature of the iron parts and the rounded lighting fixtures in the hairdressing area are made by the master on-site with the use of machines, which was time-consuming but very effective.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in July 2023 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The hairdressing area is the place where the designers spend most of their time with the customers. The designer made precise calculations on the distribution of seats and route planning so that even if a trolley is placed, it will not affect the movement or make the space narrow. The semi-circular light in the reception area and the curved light in the hairdressing area interpret the smooth rhythm, which can be regarded as the essence of the space and the inspiration of aesthetics. Not only do they create a lasting memory, but they also serve as an excellent example for the owner to expand the branch.
- Research
- The designer installed large floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors to create a fresh and transparent space. The designer also took the image of a haircut to give new life and definition to the space, simultaneously demonstrating simplicity and creativity. The beige-gray resembles white and the warmth of the wood creates a healing and soothing first impression. When consumers enter the space, they will focus on the subtle and delicate details. The rounded chandelier in the center is a soft expression of calm. The apt, elegant curves are a hallmark of the brand's personalization.
- Inspiration
- The project is a Korean-style hair salon. The appointment system offers a premium service and quality, targeting the female clientele. To reverse the established image of hair salons, the designer used curves to create a unique sense of flow and added warm wood grains to describe the natural look and rhythmic beauty. The soft and cozy atmosphere makes hairdressing more than an experience, but also a stress-free journey that can soothe and relax the body and mind.
