About Base Drinking Glass

The design of the Base series focuses on the function of a drinking glass, highlighting the contrast between being empty or full. The glasses are made from borosilicate glass. Thin and delicate, but with a solid base with a lot of depth. The series includes three sizes: 200ml, 330ml, and 500ml, and is designed to be stackable. The packaging is made from recycled cardboard, emphasizing sustainability.

Florian Seidl's Base Drinking Glass engages a rich lineage of Scandinavian and Central European design thinking that positions everyday functional objects as worthy vehicles for aesthetic exploration and material innovation, a tradition extending through mid-century masters who championed the integration of utility and beauty within domestic contexts, the work demonstrates sophisticated chromatic restraint through its triadic palette of emerald, violet, and neutral transparency, each hue applied with graduated intensity that reveals both technical glassworking mastery and sensitivity to optical phenomena, the compositional achievement lies in the precise calibration of spacing, scale relationship, and diagonal recession that transforms three related objects into a unified visual statement while preserving individual identity, the deliberate compression and asymmetrical deformation of each cylindrical base constitutes the design's conceptual and formal innovation, subverting expectations of stability and vertical alignment to introduce playful dynamism and sculptural character into an otherwise archetypal vessel form, this formal intervention invites contemplation of the boundary between intentional design feature and charming imperfection, between manufacturing variation and artistic expression, between functional reliability and aesthetic surprise, the volumetric measurement markings subtly embossed on each glass reinforce the objects' primary utilitarian purpose while the chromatic treatment and base manipulation elevate them beyond mere instrumentality into the realm of collectible design, the graduated color application demonstrates technical facility with glass tinting or layering processes, achieving smooth transitions from saturated intensity to near-transparency that enhance the cylindrical forms' volumetric presence and create varying degrees of opacity and revelation, the work's thematic territory encompasses the democratization of design excellence, the elevation of quotidian ritual through thoughtful object consideration, the pleasure derived from well-crafted everyday companions, and the gentle humor possible when functional forms accept expressive liberties, the series structure with chromatic differentiation suggests potential for extended collection, personal selection according to preference, and the cumulative visual interest of assembled variation, the tilted posture created by compressed bases may evoke associations with use-worn objects, artisanal irregularity, or organic growth patterns where perfect symmetry yields to natural variation, the transparency and translucency invite observation of contained liquids as chromatic participants in the visual experience, transforming the act of filling and drinking into aesthetic engagement, might this work prompt reflection on how design choices in objects encountered daily shape sensory experience, aesthetic awareness, and the quality of domestic life, how even modest formal innovations can refresh perception of familiar typologies, and how material experimentation and manufacturing precision combine to produce objects that reward both practical use and contemplative appreciation?

Unique Properties
The products of this product series can be described as elegant drinking glasses with a super delicate top and a chunky and extra stable base. They are made from borosilicate glass. There are three different sizes. 200 ml 330 ml and 500 ml. The essential design is based on a modular approach and is specifically designed to be stackable. It is all about the base.

Production Technology
The Base glassware series is made from borosilicate glass. The material is known for its strength, durability and temperature resistance. The glass can be moulded and crafted in a variety of very different shapes and thicknesses. It is an infinitely recyclable material that can be re-melted again and again minimizing waste and environmental impact. The packaging is made from recycled cardboard.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was the necessity to create a series of modular and stackable drinking glasses in different sizes that also explore the formal possibilities of the material and make a visual statement.
Project Duration
The project was designed in Italy during the summer of 2024 as a quick side study for Officina Endorfino. An exploration and exercise in glassware design.
Operation Flow
Take a glass. Fill it up. Bring it to your mouth. Drink. Enjoy!
Research
The design process was based on conceptual and formal research aimed at understanding material properties and opportunities of the category.
Product development and refinement through traditional sketching and 3D modelling.
Inspiration
The design of Base is looking at the basic function of a drinking glass and the contrast between its two states of being - empty and full. Delicate and light at the top and solid at the base with a lot of depth. The transparent material setting the stage for a great experience. So, is the glass half empty or half full?
