About Yuntu Banquet Restaurant

Yuntu is a banquet restaurant designed for large events such as weddings and celebrations in Shaoxing, China. The interior covers 1400 square meters with a floor height of 8 meters. The space is divided into three parts: a 60 meter long corridor enclosed by glass, a black and white hall with a cloud shaped partition, and a bright banquet hall. Painting techniques of the Song Dynasty guide the forms of the moon, clouds, mountains, water and flowers. Azure is the main color, combined with black and white, for a calm and ethereal atmosphere.

Shang Cai's Yuntu Banquet Restaurant represents an exceptional achievement within contemporary hospitality design, demonstrating how spatial architecture can transcend mere function to create environments of profound experiential and contemplative significance, the designer appears to draw upon traditions of landscape painting and classical garden design, translating the misty mountain peaks and ethereal cloud formations of traditional aesthetic philosophy into three-dimensional built form, the technical accomplishment evident in the seamless integration of diverse material systems including the mirror-polished flooring that doubles the visual complexity of the space, the delicate wire structures that suggest natural growth patterns while maintaining architectural precision, and the remarkable textured sphere that serves as both focal point and symbolic anchor, the chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how limited palette can intensify spatial experience, the aquamarine and ivory tones creating an atmosphere suspended between aquatic depths and celestial heights, between frozen winter landscapes and spring garden freshness, the curvilinear geometries throughout reject rigid orthogonal conventions in favor of organic flowing forms that guide both eye and body through the space in continuous unfolding discovery, one might observe how the arched apertures and cascading vertical elements create thresholds and layered spatial zones that reward movement and changing vantage points, the floral arrangements introduce ephemeral natural beauty that softens and humanizes the architectural grandeur while suggesting the transient pleasures the space is designed to frame, the transparent seating maintains visual lightness while the white table linens echo cloud formations against the reflective floor-sky below, viewers are invited to consider how such environments might transform the ritual of communal dining into an experience of aesthetic immersion and shared wonder

Design features:
Song Dynasty is the era with the highest level of artistic creation. The designer hopes to express the painting art of the Song Dynasty in space to create a unique spatial temperament. The design features are mainly reflected in three aspects:
Firstly, spatial planning: the designer divides the space into three parts, and draws on the garden design techniques of the Chinese Song Dynasty. It is a 60 meter long vaulted corridor enclosed by glass first, and then detoured into a special shaped hall with black and white tones, and finally into a bright and crystal banquet hall. The three spaces use different shapes, materials, light and colors to form a space with sense of layer. Therefore, guests can feel a strong visual shock when they reach the theme space.
Secondly, artistic expression: the designer adopts the most representative freehand brushwork techniques in the painting and calligraphy of the Song Dynasty to freely display devices such as moon, cloud, mountain, water, flower and trees in the space without restriction, and at the same time creates ethereal mood for city of sky through a lot of white space and the combination of virtuality and reality.
Thirdly, color matching: generally no more than five colors are used in Song Dynasty ink paintings. In this project, the designer uses azure as main color in the space, matched with black and white. Different effects are formed through the interaction for reflectivity and transparency of different materials and environmental lighting, reflecting the simple color concept in the art creations of Song Dynasty.
Design Challenge
The excellent art works in Song Dynasty possess distinctive vitality. How to present charm to the space is the challenge for the project.
Clouds and flowers are the most vital elements in nature. The designer uses transparent and reflective material to build models and combines with light change to express the fluidity and haziness of cloud. It forms a combination of virtuality and reality with various flower devices in the space and creates space atmosphere full of vitality and dreamy color.
Project Duration
Design Period: April 2018-June 2018
Construction Period: April 2018-January 2019
Completion Time: January 2019
Project Address: Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, China
Operation Flow
The guests first pass through a 60-meter-long blue transparent passageway to a black-and-white event hall with a cloud-shaped device serving as partition, and finally into a huge, dreamy banquet hall.
Through the carefully designed spatial motion lines and color contrast, the space is endowed with a sense of rhythm and ceremony, bringing guests from the hustle and bustle of city into crystal sky theme space with flowing clouds. It seems as if we are in the heaven instead of in the universe.

Inspiration
The Song Dynasty was the peak of art in history of China. Emperor Song Huizong of the Song Dynasty created azure porcelain according to the color of the sky after the rain, which became the most representative artistic symbol of the Song Dynasty.
The designer uses azure as the main color and added black and white to complete the color matching of the whole space, creating a space that is ethereal, clean and rich in the aesthetic features of the Chinese Song Dynasty.

Design Interview about Yuntu Banquet Restaurant

Inspired by ancient jade in China. The client asked to express the Chinese tradition implicitly, a gentleman is like jade, a beauty is like jade, so I want to use the element jade to express the entire space.

The main focus of the design is how to express the texture of jade. This is a material perception between liquidity and solidity. We still insist on expressing solidity with solids instead of two-dimensional pictures.

Chinese traditional culture is very interesting. We have been trying to express this culture in new ways. This is the case with this project, and it will be the same in the future.

About 1 month.

This is one of the two projects commissioned by the client. The other one is based on the culture of Tang Dynasty in China, and this one is based on the culture of Song Dynasty in China.

I have independent intellectual property rights.

Cross-border combination of stage art and soft art.

Tadao Ando and Gaudi.

Customers with good aesthetics and high budget.

I focus on alternative expressions about Chinese culture,no longer the traditional high-saturated color and figurative elements. It maks the whole space more abstract.

The name means the pictures of cloud, like the freezing of a cloud flowing in the air. It is the redefinition of jade in my heart.

Sketch Master.

The translucent material of the entire space is the most special part of this project. There is dynamic light and shadow flowing, which makes the scene ranslucent and opaque, just like the color and texture of jade in different light. We call it congee in Chinese.

I designed independently.

DMX CNC light strip is the core of technology, it realized the change of liquid-like texture of solid materials.

The time is very tight, we completed all the design work in one month.

By a friend's recommendation.

The proper use of diffrent materials is my greatest achievement.
