About Wave Glassware
Wave is a glassware collection designed for drinks and desserts. The collection includes a whiskey tumbler, a long drink glass and an ice cream cup. Each piece has a textured surface with gentle curves inspired by the geometry of ocean waves. The rhythmic contours add visual depth and offer a pleasant grip. The glasses are produced from soda lime glass with an automatic press machine. The wall thickness of the wavy surfaces was optimized for mass production. Wave reinterprets classic ribbed drinkware in a contemporary way.
Gürok's Wave Glassware engages a distinguished lineage of relief-molded drinkware that extends from nineteenth-century pressed glass traditions through mid-century Scandinavian functionalist design to contemporary material investigations, situating these vessels within ongoing dialogues about how surface articulation can transform utilitarian objects into occasions for aesthetic contemplation and sensory enrichment. The technical achievement evidenced in these forms demonstrates sophisticated understanding of glass manufacturing processes, where the pronounced vertical ribbing molded into each cylinder serves structural, ergonomic, and optical functions simultaneously—the relief pattern provides secure tactile grip even when exterior surfaces encounter condensation, creates rhythmic visual interest through geometric repetition, and most significantly generates complex light behavior as illumination refracts through alternating thick and thin glass sections filled with chromatic liquid, producing gradations of luminous intensity and subtle internal caustic patterns that reward sustained observation. The chromatic presentation establishes complementary harmony through the pairing of cool emerald green and warm amber orange liquids, a color relationship that creates visual vibrancy while suggesting the range of beverage experiences these vessels might elegantly contain, from botanical infusions and herbal cocktails to spirits and fresh preparations, the transparent glass substrate allowing the natural color of contents to become integral to the aesthetic experience rather than concealed. Material quality appears exceptional, with high optical clarity, consistent wall thickness, clean rim edges, and substantial circular bases that provide stability while maintaining visual lightness, the precision of industrial manufacture evident in the uniform spacing and depth of the vertical fluting that encircles each form. The presentation itself demonstrates curatorial sensitivity, positioning the vessels on weathered timber that provides textural and material contrast—refined industrial precision meeting organic rusticity—while garnishes of desiccated citrus and fresh rosemary introduce subtle narrative suggestions of preparation, hospitality, and the convivial rituals surrounding shared refreshment. These design choices reflect broader contemporary values in object culture where functionality integrates with aesthetic pleasure, where everyday implements receive the same formal consideration traditionally reserved for decorative arts, and where material honesty and surface articulation create richness without applied ornament, the beauty emerging from the interaction between form, material properties, and environmental conditions rather than from superficial decoration. The vessels invite consideration of how thoughtful design elevates daily experience, how surface relief can transform light into visual poetry, and how the simple act of holding and using a well-conceived object might bring quiet satisfaction through the marriage of practical utility and contemplative beauty.

- Unique Properties
- Wave collection embody the geometry of nature and its beauty, with their textured and patterned surface reminiscent of organic forms. The tactile design not only adds a visual appeal but also offers a pleasing grip, making them both practical and sumptuous. Gentle curves mirror the rhythmic flow of the waves, while enriching the interaction between light and depth. The collection includes one whiskey tumbler, one long drink glass, and an ice cream cup.

- Production Technology
- It is produced from soda lime glass using the automatic press machine. Glass is the most suitable material for both indoor and outdoor use, and it is healthy and environmentally friendly.
- Design Challenge
- Form of the products drew inspiration from the idea of translating the fluidity, rhythm, and harmony of ocean waves into tangible glass objects. Applying the wave form to products of varying sizes, ensuring continuity, and creating a product collection were challenging. The wall thickness distribution of the wavy surfaces had to be carefully optimized for mass production.
- Project Duration
- The project which started in February 2024, was completed in January 2025 and exhibited at the 2025 Ambiente fair.
- Operation Flow
- Its form creates a three dimensional sense of motion on glass with its dynamic lines inspired by the fluid energy of waves. The rhythmic contours on its surface capture a fleeting moment of the ever shifting form of water. Each line reflects the natural rise and fall of a wave, while its bold structure offers a modern and sculptural aesthetic.
- Research
- The project aimed to reinterpret classic ribbed drinkware with a contemporary approach, imbuing it with dynamic and innovative qualities. By exploring how geometry of nature can influence both the aesthetic and functional aspects of glassware design, the form of the products was derived from organic forms and repetitive patterns found in nature. The resulting designs challenge traditional perceptions of form and texture while also providing a pleasant grip and offering a new sensory and visual experience.
- Inspiration
- Wave is inspired by the infinite cycle of ocean waves and the elegant geometry within water itself. Each curve of a wave carries the flawless mathematics of nature and a rhythm that invites a deep sense of serenity.
