About Trip of Tea Illustrations
Trip of Tea is a pair of illustrations created for a Chinese tea company. The two works are inspired by two historic tea transport routes, the Tea Road of Ten Thousand Miles and the Maritime Silk Road. A horse taken from the client logo appears as a messenger along each route. The form of each horse and the pattern on its saddle change to reflect the features of the destination city or region. Tea drinking scenes from different countries are included. The illustrations are hand drawn on a tablet and unfolded as a tiled reel that suits posters, postcards and other uses.
Wu yao's Trip of Tea Illustrations, honored with a Silver A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design, presents a remarkable visual meditation on the cultural odyssey that tea has undertaken across civilizations and centuries, rendered through a distinctive synthesis of Eastern compositional philosophies and Western decorative traditions. The work operates as a chromatic symphony orchestrating warm amber, coral, and gold tonalities against cool teal and verdant passages, creating a temperature dialogue that suggests both the warmth of shared social rituals and the refreshing nature of tea itself. The artist demonstrates exceptional facility in managing extraordinary visual complexity, organizing multiple narrative vignettes—formal dances, intimate tea gatherings, equestrian processions, and architectural splendors—within an organic framework of cloud formations that recall both Chinese shanshui landscape conventions and European Rococo decorative schemes. Architectural elements receive particularly loving attention, from the neoclassical palatial facades glowing with interior illumination to the ornately patterned ecclesiastical domes that speak to specific cultural traditions without geographical specificity, suggesting instead the universal human impulse toward ceremonial beauty. The prominent teacup at compositional center, with its delicate wisp of aromatic steam, anchors the diverse visual elements within the unifying theme of tea culture as a vehicle for cultural exchange and refined social communion. Period costumes rendered with textile specificity—from elaborate ball gowns in deep crimson to folk-inspired equestrian garments rich with geometric patterning—populate the composition with human presence that transforms architectural grandeur into lived experience. The monumental celestial orb dominating the upper register bathes the entire scene in ethereal luminosity, suggesting that this journey through tea culture partakes of something transcendent, elevating quotidian ritual to mythic dimension. How might viewers consider their own daily rituals as portals to broader human connection across time and culture?

- Unique Properties
- These two works are illustration designs created for the famous Chinese tea company "Bama Tea". We combined the most conspicuous horse element in the client's company logo and applied it to the illustration, using it as the main body and the theme of "Revisiting the Road to Tea", with the horse element running through it. It is worth noting that different images of horses and saddles vary, combining different characteristics of tourist destinations and drawing in depth different countries and regions. The entire picture is unfolded in a tiled form to facilitate subsequent graphic promotion and use.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The size displayed as a separate illustration work is 3.84m*0.76m using giclee technology. Commercial applications vary in size depending on the type.

- Production Technology
- The illustrations are created on photoshop using a hand-drawn tablet. This long reel accommodates most size applications. These three parts can be used alone or in conjunction with other derivatives for subsequent commercial applications, such as postcards, posters and other creative works.
- Design Challenge
- The difficulty in creating this illustration lies in the combination of tea cultures from different countries. It is necessary to avoid cluttering the picture and maintain a unified style without losing its characteristics.
- Project Duration
- The project started in Beijing in August 2022 and was completed in Beijing in December 2022
- Research
- Reference is made to the tea culture of different countries and regions in history, and the entrepreneurial background of the client company is integrated with it. A large number of tea drinking scenes from different countries are integrated into the illustrations to show the tea culture of different countries, and are connected by horses in different postures. The illustrations are colorful and harmonious.
- Inspiration
- The two illustrations are inspired by the two tea transportation routes in Chinese history, namely the "Ten Thousand Miles Tea Road" and the "Maritime Silk Road", using horses as messengers throughout the route of the Ten Thousand Miles Tea Road.
