About The Hybrid Sanctuary Residential Creative Studio

The Hybrid Sanctuary is a residential creative studio located in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The interior covers 85.8 square meters and joins a private home with a professional workspace. A multifunctional island serves as both a dining surface and a material selection workstation. A traditional ancestral altar is integrated into the minimalist architecture. Curved forms and mineral coatings soften the large beams and columns, and stainless steel strips embedded in the floor provide ambient light. A smart lighting system adjusts color temperature to each activity.

PAO-CHIEH CHOU and TZE-HSIN SUN's residential creative studio intervention participates in contemporary spatial design discourse exploring the dissolution of conventional domestic programming, where traditional categorical boundaries separating work, rest, and social exchange yield to fluid multifunctional environments that accommodate the complex rhythms of creative practice within residential settings. The designers demonstrate sophisticated compositional intelligence through layered spatial organization that establishes distinct functional zones while maintaining visual and experiential continuity, employing a restrained material palette and carefully calibrated lighting design to unify disparate programmatic requirements within coherent atmospheric identity. The chromatic strategy merits particular attention, restricting color selection to an exquisitely narrow range of warm neutrals that creates serene visual coherence while allowing subtle tonal variations and textural differentiation to maintain sensory interest and prevent monotony, a disciplined approach that recalls minimalist spatial philosophy while retaining warmth and tactile invitation through material selection and surface articulation. The integration of architectural millwork demonstrates technical accomplishment, particularly evident in the backlit storage wall where precision joinery and concealed lighting infrastructure create floating luminous panels that serve simultaneously as functional storage, architectural focal point, and ambient light source, transforming utilitarian cabinetry into experiential element that shapes spatial atmosphere and emotional tenor. The seating element's generous scale and sumptuous material quality suggests extended habitation and sustained creative work rather than transient occupation, while its positioning creates subtle spatial division without architectural barrier, allowing the workspace surface visible beyond to maintain visual connection with the primary living zone while suggesting functional differentiation. The incorporation of living plant material introduces biophilic dimension, connecting interior environment to natural systems and organic growth cycles, while the sculptural character of coniferous foliage provides formal counterpoint to the predominantly rectilinear architectural vocabulary, softening geometric rigor with irregular organic silhouette and introducing dynamic seasonal variation into otherwise controlled interior composition. The lighting design reveals particular sophistication in its layered approach, combining ambient recessed sources, dramatic architectural backlighting, and intimate task illumination to create flexible environmental conditions supporting varied activities and temporal rhythms, from focused daytime productivity to contemplative evening retreat. The metallic accent elements, though modest in scale, provide crucial chromatic punctuation and reflective surfaces that animate the predominantly matte material palette, while their warm rose gold or copper tonality maintains chromatic coherence with the broader neutral scheme. This spatial conception invites consideration of how contemporary life increasingly demands environments that accommodate multiple modes of inhabitation simultaneously, where professional creative practice, domestic comfort, contemplative solitude, and social exchange coexist within integrated rather than segregated spatial frameworks, and where architectural design responds through flexible programming, atmospheric modulation, and material warmth that supports human flourishing across diverse activities and temporal cycles.

Unique Properties
This project integrates professional work requirements and personal residence within a fluid environment. a multifunctional island serves as both a dining area and a material selection workstation. Notably, a traditional ancestral altar is integrated into the minimalist architectural language, demonstrating that traditional rituals can be incorporated into modern design without visual compromise.
Dimensions & Packaging
The total indoor area of this project is 85.8 square meters. The spatial layout comprises a multifunctional living room integrated with a workspace, one bathroom, a master bedroom, a walk-in closet, a secondary bedroom, an independent kitchen, and a work balcony. A key technical feature is the implementation of an electronic access control system, which strategically and securely separates the professional work domain from the private residential areas.

Production Technology
Large beams and columns are softened using curved architectural forms and mineral coatings. A technical feature involves curved stainless steel strips embedded in the floor for ambient illumination. Furthermore, a smart lighting system adjusts color temperatures to suit the specific demands of this multifunctional space.
Design Challenge
The research focused on the psychological and functional intersection of work, life, and traditional practice within a confined footprint. Methodology included spatial flow analysis and material tactile studies. We investigated how natural textures and layered lighting affect occupants' stress levels and productivity. The insight revealed that concealing functional complexity behind minimalist architectural forms successfully fosters both professional focus and personal calm.
Project Duration
The project started in June 2025 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and was successfully completed in January 2026.
Operation Flow
The space operates on a dual-axis of professional and personal life. The central kitchen island transforms fluidly from a casual dining surface into a professional material-selection workstation for client meetings. The traditional altar is seamlessly integrated into the minimalist architecture, allowing daily personal rituals to occur naturally without disrupting the modern aesthetic flow. Lighting adapts to these shifts, transitioning from bright task lighting to soft ambient glows.
Research
The research focused on the psychological and functional intersection of work, life, and traditional practice within a confined footprint. Methodology included spatial flow analysis and material tactile studies. We investigated how natural textures stone, wood veneer and layered lighting affect occupants' stress levels and productivity. The insight revealed that concealing functional complexity behind minimalist monoline architecture successfully fosters both professional focus and personal calm.
Inspiration
The design focuses on the use of authentic textures and layered lighting to create a quiet environment. The intent was to develop a space that balances structural forms with neutral tones and natural finishes, fostering a sense of order and calm through the rhythmic interplay of light and material.
