About Spyker Trivet
Spyker is a practical and beautiful trivet inspired by propeller designs of vintage airplanes. The Spyker trivet combines classic lines with contemporary materials. The stainless steel ring adds a subtle touch of class to the discreet design and comfortably fits into both modern and traditional homes. The functional design features a fingertip duct which allows the user to quickly open the trivet even while wearing oven gloves. When not in use this trivet loves resting in any kitchen drawer, standing up in a jar or hang suspended from a kitchen hook.
Shakes's Spyker Trivet exemplifies the contemporary movement toward elevating quotidian domestic objects into statements of refined design philosophy, transforming a humble kitchen implement into an object worthy of sustained aesthetic contemplation. The work emerges from traditions of industrial design excellence that privilege geometric clarity, material honesty, and functional elegance, suggesting affinities with mid-century Scandinavian design principles while embracing the precision manufacturing capabilities of contemporary fabrication technologies. The cruciform configuration establishes immediate visual authority, its four radiating arms achieving perfect rotational symmetry while the central machined hub introduces material contrast through its polished surface treatment, creating a dialogue between matte and reflective finishes that rewards close examination. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the precision of every edge, the consistency of surface treatment across each arm, and the refined profile featuring longitudinal channels that serve both structural and aesthetic purposes. The designer seems to engage with questions of how utilitarian objects participate in the visual culture of domestic spaces, proposing that items of practical function may simultaneously operate as sculptural presences that enhance the environments they inhabit. The monochromatic palette demonstrates restraint and sophistication, allowing form to communicate without the distraction of applied color, while the dramatic presentation photography underscores the work's status as designed object worthy of serious attention. Viewers might consider how this trivet transforms the moment of placing a heated vessel upon a surface into an interaction with thoughtfully conceived design, elevating routine kitchen activities into experiences of aesthetic engagement with carefully crafted material culture.

- Unique Properties
- Spyker is a practical and beautiful trivet inspired by its namesake propeller machine. The functional design features a fingertip duct which allows you to quickly open the trivet and locks with a securing bump feedback. The closed design is sleek and easily stored away in your organizer or showcased on your tabletop.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Spyker measures 22cm across in length and 3cm in width at 10mm height. It can accommodate small and big pots beyond its own diameter.

- Production Technology
- The structural parts of Spyker are made from reinforced Nylon and covered with food grade Silicone for instant heat absorption and protective anti slipping on table tops. The central highlight is made from Stainless Steel with spun brushed finish.
- Design Challenge
- The creative challenge was the integration of the small mechanical locking feature and the feeling when the trivet unfolded and snapped into position. This mechanism was vital for the interaction between user and product and required reliability for prolonged use. We were also facing the conundrum of the usability of the product itself. From personal and observational insight trivets aren’t always used for serving. We found trivets standing in as laptop stands as well as vase coasters. Ultimately we aimed to create a Design which would speak to non-traditional users and inspire other creative usages.
- Project Duration
- Design for Spyker started early 2015 in our Bangkok Studio and early production started in September the same year in HongKong at SNF+ headquarters.
- Operation Flow
- Spyker was designed to be functional and compact for users. When not in use this trivet loves resting in any kitchen drawer, standing up in a jar or being suspended from a kitchen hook. When needed Spyker quickly unfolds into a 22cm large diameter even when operated with oven gloves thanks to its grooved ducts. Cleaning and washing is equally simple and safe, just hold it under the tap and leave it out for drying.
- Research
- Our challenge was to create a trivet that could challenge the genius of a competitive product in the market. At the same time we looked at the existing range of trivets that usually are defined into two categories, table top and compact. We opted for the compact choice because we idolized the idea of portability and out of the way solutions. After bench-marking probably all available trivets we realized how badly this category needed Design attention. Trivets were either too difficult to unfold with triple or quadruple legs and stiff joints or they failed to significantly reduce in size for convenient storage.
- Inspiration
- Paying homage to the propeller designs of vintage airplanes the Spyker trivet combines classic lines with contemporary materials. The stainless steel ring adds a subtle touch of class to the overall colorful design and comfortably fits into both modern and traditional homes.

Design Interview about Spyker Trivet
Spyker was inspired by aviation history and the old pre-war double decker machines. I wanted the Design to be reminiscent of a propeller.
The focus was to create a functional yet beautiful Design that could go head to head with Menu's iconic trivet. Where Menu's trivet features a single material choice I opted to create a little more highlight by adding a circular steel ring.
I hope that this Design can withstand the test of times and become an iconic Design for the SNF+ brand. It is also a product with a very long shelf life.
It took me about one week to finish the Design concept but it took nearly another 2 months to complete the engineering development.
The Design was a pitch to our client who accepted it upon review.
The Design belongs to our client SNF+ which co-brands with our shakes brand.
SNF+ has been one of our long-standing clients and we are working hard to build up this brand with award winning Designs every year.
Menu's Propeller Trivet by Jacob Wagner was the main competitive inspiration.
Design Lovers and Kitchen Maestros who enjoy life and respect the good things.
I think that this Design has set itself apart from the Menu Design not particularly competing on aesthetic values but on a functional side that it's easier to open dues to the ducts. I also think that the Stainless Steel ring adds a classic touch that just shines a little more.
Spyker is an old "gone" brand of Propeller planes. For some reason I had this name in my head probably because Spyker is now a high end automotive brand.
I used 3D software to create the concept on the PC after sketching it out first. Then I made a quick prototype on my 3D printer t check for dimensions and mechanical movement. After satisfying my requirements the factory undertook some more changes to match manufacturing needs.
I really like the "hole" in the center of the trivet. It kinds draws you in and lends the Design a special character.
I have to thank Jonathan Lo who gave his support during the manufacturing stage and Surakead Hemwimon for his mechanical expertise during the Design stage.
Luckily there is no technology involved. This is a good ol' touch and feel Design.
No, looked at none of that.
Due to the fantastic team behind the manufacturing we didn't face any major complications but had to change the metal ring from an originally curved Design to a flat ring.
I've started competing on the A Design platform last year winning three awards so I plan to compete on it at least once a year to build the studio's profile but also Thailand's Design Ranking.
I always push myself and the people we work with to reach for the best. It is the key to creating something great and the key of never getting comfortable so that your mind always stays sharp and hungry.
I think my brain's already blown by all the above questions!
