About Smart City Exhibition Design
Smart City is an exhibition design created for an international municipal innovation exhibition and conference held in Tel Aviv, Israel. The design covers 3000 square meters and includes a registration hall, a VIP lounge, business meeting rooms, conference stages and a gala venue. The concept is based on a vertical city rising above an increasingly urbanized world. Hanging and geometric elements are made of aluminum, plexiglass and mesh to keep the weight low. Printed carpets, light boxes and greenery installations complete the setting.
Michele Berdugo's exhibition design for a major technology exposition demonstrates exceptional mastery of large-scale spatial orchestration, transforming a conventional hall into an immersive urban simulation that embodies forward-thinking approaches to human interaction with built environments. The designer's strategic employment of a unified chromatic scheme dominated by cool violet-blue tones establishes immediate visual coherence across an otherwise potentially chaotic assemblage of diverse brand presentations, while the carefully calibrated introduction of warm lighting within individual pavilions creates welcoming nodes of human-scaled intimacy within the technological vastness. The overhead truss system, typically a purely functional element relegated to visual background, here becomes an integral compositional device that mirrors urban infrastructure and reinforces the conceptual premise of interconnected systems. The floor treatment merits particular attention, its cartographic pattern suggesting aerial views of street networks and urban planning diagrams, thereby extending the smart city metaphor from purely technological concerns into spatial and navigational dimensions. This work participates in a distinguished lineage of exhibition design that traces from the great world's fair pavilions through contemporary experiential environments, demonstrating how commercial and educational spaces might transcend mere product display to become themselves statements about collective aspiration and technological possibility. Visitors encountering this environment are invited to consider how the organization of space itself communicates values about connectivity, accessibility, and the harmonious integration of human needs with technological capability.

- Unique Properties
- The design project was related to the annual international Municipal Innovation Exhibition and Conference focusing on areas pertaining to smart cities- innovation, environmental issues and approaches to urban planning, transportation etc.
The design brief aimed to create an experience on 3000m2 where the visitor would be embarked to discover an innovative approach of the city.
The theme around sustainability and innovation stamped the concept and design in the registration hall, the vip lounge, the b2b meeting rooms, the conferences stages and the Gala event venue. - Dimensions & Packaging
- Wood, printed canvas wall, on which we attached 3 D cut out letters framed by led lights, formed the background of the registration and self registration desks.

- Production Technology
- In order to avoid heavy weight hanging, materials like Aluminum, plexiglass, mesh, were used to create all hanging and geometric elements. The furniture, props, lighting and LED screens were hired. Personalized and printed carpets covered the exhibition hall flooring. Installations made out of greenery and vegetal were spread out all over. Extra-large size decorative gates as well as 3D letters were made out of thick printed cardboard. Aesthetic and modern floral compositions completed the decoration in the conference halls and VIP lounge.
- Design Challenge
- The most challenging part was finding a design concept different from any previous design concept used for this fair. The most important aspect was the design had to heighten the public perception and awareness of the MUNIEXPO.One additional challenge was to find the right materials which would help us create the vision of the design accurately without being neither too heavy nor too expensive, so they can pass all authorizations.
- Project Duration
- The project duration was 4 months from initial briefing to onsite completion. It was launched on the 18th of February 2020 and ran for 3 days. Only 2 days were allowed for the move in and onsite set up. MUNIEXPO was located at the Tel Aviv Fairground in Tel Aviv, Israel.
- Operation Flow
- The flow starts with a modern registration and welcoming hall, where led light designs, decorative gates and large size installations were spread out to draw the attention of the visitor. Inside the exhibition hall dramatic lighting and interactive experiences enabled a heightened visual story telling experience. A hall for speakers with a mix of urban sustainable and futuristic look was accessible from the exhibition space.
The second floor was reachable from the welcome hall. - Research
- The research began with analyzing innovation and news of the moment around the city of tomorrow, smart city, sustainability etc.
The design was intended to drive the visitor into the city of tomorrow he came to discover through the different showcases, international developers and product representatives. To relate the theme to this industry, series of settings were built under the vertical city concept for the exhibition treatment. Selected colors, textures and lighting elements were used to refer to the innovative/futuristic and ecologic side of the project. - Inspiration
- Inspiration for the MUNIEXPO design concept derived from the topic of innovation pertaining to Smart Cities. This led us to creating a 3D design to stimulate the imagination of the visitor with the feeling of finding himself in a city of tomorrow.
Land is becoming scarce as the world's population grows and environmental changes shrink the amount of livable space on Earth. Build up seems to be a solution for Sustainable Living, hence Vertical city above an increasing urbanized world. - Image Credits
