About My Coin 3D Animation

My Coin is a short three-dimensional animated film about the meaning of value. The story follows a boy who drops a coin into a sewer. A wealthy man sees the boy and offers a gold bar instead of the lost coin. For the boy, the gold is only a tool to recover the coin, while the man sees gold as the greater prize. The film shows that each person holds a different standard of value. My Coin was created with computer animation software, which allowed the characters and their actions to be exaggerated for dramatic effect.

My Coin 3D Animation by Sungkyun Bae participates in the rich tradition of character-driven animated storytelling that emerged from pioneering digital animation studios during the early twenty-first century, demonstrating the medium's capacity to convey complex emotional narratives through carefully crafted visual design. The work presents a frozen moment of apparent significance between two figures whose contrasting physical characteristics—the compact, eager child and the towering, dignified elder—suggest thematic exploration of mentorship, generational knowledge transfer, and the universal experience of childhood wonder encountering worldly wisdom. The technical execution reveals sophisticated understanding of three-dimensional modeling principles, with particular accomplishment evident in the organic deformation of soft body volumes, the physics-informed draping of textile surfaces, and the nuanced rendering of ambient occlusion within architectural recesses. Chromatic choices demonstrate careful attention to emotional temperature, balancing the vivid saturation of the child's costume against the more subdued warmth of the gentleman's attire, while environmental elements provide contextual grounding through familiar urban markers. The composition's low vantage point invites viewers to share the child's perspective, experiencing the world as monumentally scaled and full of possibility, while simultaneously presenting the elder figure as protective and approachable rather than intimidating. Surface treatments throughout achieve remarkable tactile believability, from the pebbly texture suggesting molded rubber or vinyl in the dinosaur cap to the plush weight of the gentleman's overcoat. This work invites contemplation of how animation as a medium can distill universal human experiences into singular visual moments that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Design Challenge
Challenges on whether it is possible to produce 3D animations that can effectively deliver content within a short period of time.
Project Duration
The project started in march 2017 in Bournemouth university and finished in march 2017 in Bournemouth university
Operation Flow
I made 3D animation using Maya program. Through 3D animation, we were able to exaggerate the character's behavior and express what we wanted to deliver more dramatically.
Research
Research and expression of each person's values
Inspiration
Because gold is very expensive, people generally prefer it to cheap coins, but in terms of boys' value standards, gold was just a tool to get out coins. Everyone has a different standard of value.
