About Gemini Modular Coffee Pot

Gemini is a modular coffee pot that combines hand brewing and moka pot brewing in one device. A grinding component is integrated into the body, so fewer separate tools are needed and less space is used. The fineness of the coffee grounds is adjusted by turning the lid. Pressing down the grinding component closes the powder outlet and starts the moka brewing mode. When filter paper is placed inside the grinding component, hand brewing is possible. Most parts are made of recyclable plastic, and some parts are made of metal.

Yunsong Liu's Gemini Modular Coffee Pot demonstrates how contemporary industrial design continues to negotiate the productive tension between utilitarian necessity and aesthetic refinement, situating itself within a lineage of modernist domestic objects that seek to elevate everyday rituals through thoughtful formal intervention. The design engages with a rich heritage of minimalist product language that extends from early twentieth-century functionalist movements through Scandinavian mid-century modernism to contemporary sustainable design thinking, embodying principles that prioritize clarity, honesty of materials, and the integration of form and function into coherent visual statements. The compositional achievement lies in the elegant resolution of competing demands: the vertical columnar body provides substantial volume for beverage capacity while maintaining slender proportions that suggest spatial efficiency and visual lightness; the fluted surface articulation introduces tactile richness and visual rhythm without compromising the overall geometric purity; and the warm terracotta accent band operates simultaneously as chromatic event, proportional marker, and potential functional division, demonstrating how a single formal gesture can serve multiple purposes within integrated design thinking. The chromatic restraint, limiting the palette to cool achromatic tones punctuated by a single warm hue, exhibits sophisticated color discipline that allows material character and formal geometry to command primary attention while the accent provides necessary visual relief and suggests warmth within technological precision, evoking the way classical architecture employed polychromy to articulate structural divisions and create visual interest within otherwise monumental forms. The visible plunger mechanism at the crown, rather than being concealed, becomes an honest expression of operational logic, suggesting transparency in function and inviting user understanding of the preparation process, a gesture that recalls how modernist design often celebrated mechanical components as aesthetic features worthy of display rather than elements requiring concealment. The modular implications suggested by the component-based visual structure speak to contemporary concerns around adaptability, customization, and sustainable consumption patterns, wherein objects capable of reconfiguration or expansion address diverse user needs while potentially extending product lifespan through flexible utility. The overall formal language demonstrates fluency in the vocabulary of contemporary minimalism while avoiding the coldness or severity sometimes associated with reductive aesthetics, instead achieving what might be termed warm minimalism through the terracotta accent, the rhythmic fluting that introduces human-scaled tactility, and proportions that suggest domestic intimacy rather than institutional austerity. The design appears to contemplate how everyday objects participate in the construction of domestic atmosphere and personal ritual, how the vessels through which we prepare and consume beverages become actors in daily ceremonies that structure time, provide comfort, and create moments of pause within accelerated contemporary life, suggesting that thoughtful design operates not merely at the level of functional problem-solving but also serves aesthetic, psychological, and even spiritual dimensions of human experience. One might consider, while viewing this work, how the objects we invite into our daily environments shape not only practical convenience but also our sensory experience, our relationship to materials and making, our connection to craft traditions and design heritage, and ultimately our quality of dwelling in the world.

Unique Properties
Gemini is a design that integrates hand-brewed coffee and a mocha pot. Users can choose different ways to make coffee according to their personal preferences. In addition, it incorporates a grinding component, allowing users to adjust the coarseness of the coffee grounds.
Dimensions & Packaging
Width100mm×Depth100mm×Height 200mm
Tags

Production Technology
Most coffee brewers are made of recyclable plastic, and some are made of metal. Barbecue grills are made of degradable mycelium, and grills are made of metal.
Design Challenge
Gemini's biggest challenge lies in how to combine hand-brewed coffee and steamed coffee, achieving a quick transition while still maintaining the experience. In addition, we studied the steam structure and grinding components of Mocha to integrate grinding with hand brewing and steaming coffee, reducing the need for tools. The design of the shape is also a major challenge. It is necessary to ensure the overall integrity after assembly and also take into account the aesthetic appeal of each individual unit after disassembly and assembly.
Project Duration
The project was launched in Beijing in May 2025 and completed in Beijing in December 2025.
Operation Flow
The user can adjust the grinding fineness by rotating the lid, press down the grinding component to block the powder drop port, and enter the brewing mode. When the filter paper is combined with the grinding component, users can make coffee by hand brewing, completing the switch between hand-brewed and steamed coffee.
Research
We conducted a step-by-step experience and analysis of the production methods of hand-brewed and steamed coffee, and found that the current production methods are rather complicated, with a large number of tools and taking up a lot of space. In addition, we disassembled the principles of the mocha pot and grinding tools, proposed three combined methods and realized the principles through 3D printing, and conducted steaming experiments for the improved methods.
Inspiration
Gemini's inspiration comes from the experience of making coffee. There are many tools for making coffee, which take up a lot of space. Therefore, we want to design a coffee pot that combines a grinding component, retaining the experience of both hand-brewed coffee and mocha Pots, allowing users to choose different brewing methods according to their own preferences.
