About Evd Office

EVD is an office and exhibition interior located in Shanghai, China. The space covers 300 square meters. The spatial form is shaped by classical languages, and classical architectural elements are used with modern approaches to add a sense of permanence. A U-shaped area is combined with one long side and five large windows, so natural light enters and spreads freely. Spherical forms are added to enrich the interior. The design begins by resolving limits caused by fire protection pipes and air conditioning ducts. Most walls use art paints made of shell powder and natural gums.

Within the lineage of contemporary spatial practice that draws upon Mediterranean building traditions while engaging phenomenological design principles, this interior environment demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to the experiential qualities of architectural enclosure. The design achieves its distinctive character through the strategic deployment of the arch as both structural motif and symbolic threshold, creating a processional sequence that guides occupants through carefully calibrated spatial revelations. The material unity established through the continuous plaster envelope recalls ancient building practices while the precision of execution reflects contemporary craft standards, suggesting an interest in timelessness that transcends stylistic fashion. The curved wooden partition elements introduce biomorphic warmth into the geometric vocabulary, their sweeping profiles creating intimate alcoves within the larger volume while maintaining visual connectivity across the floor plate. This interplay between enclosure and transparency, solid and void, geometric and organic, generates spatial richness without complexity. The stepped display platforms establish functional zones while creating visual interest through horizontal stratification, their bleached tones harmonizing with the warm neutral envelope while providing subtle contrast. The incorporation of living plant material within the arched opening suggests an awareness of biophilic design principles, bringing organic vitality into the refined interior environment. The overall composition invites contemplation of how architectural space shapes human experience, how material choices convey cultural values, and how the careful calibration of light, form, and proportion can create environments that nurture both productivity and wellbeing. Viewers might consider how this space negotiates between historical reference and contemporary function, and what qualities of spatial experience resonate most deeply with their own sense of place.

Unique Properties
The spatial form of the office is shaped based on classical languages. The design team utilized classical architectural elements with modern approaches, to add a sense of eternity to the space. Besides, sphere -the most beautiful solid figure is brought in, which enhances the spatial aesthetic. The designers elevated the area outside the door opening of the "garden" to create natural height difference of sight line and to endow the space with fun and a sense of mystery.

Production Technology
The design starts from solving with spatial limitations caused by pipes for fire protection and air conditioners in the original space. Such a design method can avoid repeated construction and resource wastes. 95% of walls use sustainable art paints. Those paints are composed of shell powder and natural gums, harmless to the environment and convenient for construction. Open and flexible spatial
Design Challenge
Due to site limitations, the position of the foyer determines the location of the entrance. In addition, the structural framework and the five orderly window openings define the placement of the wall. The challenges are how to allow light from the north naturally into the interior space and offer people a sense of participation and a playful perception.

Operation Flow
The spatial form is shaped based on classical languages. It absorbs arched elements from Antonello da Messina's masterpiece "St. Jerome in His Study". In the painting, Messina depicted an "eternal" space that combines openness and privacy as well as fluidity and serenity by the use of arches, which can be seen on architectural and interior structures, landscape and furniture. Based on 3D shapes, he t
Research
Located in Shanghai, China, EVD office is conceived based on two design threads that derive from site restrictions. One extends from the entrance to the interior, while the other is folded out vertically in the 5-meter-high space. Due to site limitations, the position of the foyer determines the location of the entrance. In addition, the structural framework and the five orderly window openings define the placement of the wall.
Inspiration
The designers created a U-shaped area that combines with one long side and the five large windows, allowing natural light to filter in and diffuse freely. The entrance protrudes towards the foyer, due to the consideration of fire control regulations. Its position and width for evacuation bring new opportunities for organizing spatial pattern and form. The overall spatial design starts here.
