About Curve Residential
Curve is a residential interior design for a 600 square meter apartment in a skyscraper in central Ningbo. The layout breaks the traditional square plan and takes inspiration from water droplets. Each droplet is treated as a distinct space, and droplets of different sizes are combined into flowing curved rooms. The curved walls and ceilings are built with glass fiber reinforced gypsum. Sustainable materials are used, including low emission paint, sintered stone flooring and certified boards. Stainless steel along the windows reflects daylight deeper into the rooms.
Within the evolving discourse of contemporary residential architecture, WeiPing Lin's Curve Residential emerges as a compelling meditation on the dissolution of boundaries between structural envelope and sculptural intervention, inviting consideration of how interior environments might transcend conventional rectilinear constraints to embrace the flowing geometries found throughout the natural world. The design demonstrates remarkable technical accomplishment in its seamless integration of complex curvilinear ceiling elements that appear to cascade through the space with liquid grace, their sinuous paths creating dynamic spatial experiences that shift with the viewer's movement through the environment. Lin's chromatic restraint, employing an almost exclusively white palette modulated through subtle tonal variations, allows the sculptural dimensionality of the architectural forms to assume primacy, transforming light itself into the primary material through which space is articulated and experienced. The pointed arch apertures visible in the background establish an intriguing dialogue between contemporary parametric aesthetics and historical architectural vocabularies, perhaps suggesting continuity between ancient sacred geometries and contemporary spatial innovation. The furniture selection, featuring organically curved seating that echoes the ceiling's biomorphic language, demonstrates thoughtful consideration of how objects inhabit and activate designed environments. The circular ceiling opening introduces cosmological resonance, evoking oculi throughout architectural history that have symbolized connections between terrestrial and celestial realms. This work invites contemplation of how architectural design might cultivate states of calm, wonder, and spatial awareness, encouraging viewers to consider their own relationships with the environments they inhabit and the ways built form shapes human experience and consciousness.

- Unique Properties
- This is an apartment project located in a skyscraper in the center of Ningbo. Due to the absence of other tall buildings nearby, this space enjoys excellent natural lighting conditions and views. The absence of excessive columns in this space allows designers to have the freedom to unleash their creativity. The client is a young and very individualistic couple who desire a unique home that can serve as both a residence and a venue for hosting parties with friends.

- Production Technology
- A large number of sustainable materials are used to complete this project, such as use low-voc(volatile organic compounds) paints on the wall and ceiling, the large-sized sintered stone were chosen for the flooring, cupboards are made of boards certified by FSC or PEFC. In addition, we used a row of stainless steel along the windows to enhance the reflection of outdoor light into the interior, making the indoor lighting brighter and reducing the need for artificial lighting.
- Design Challenge
- Designing and modeling curved shapes is a challenging task and spent a lot of time and effort on it. Designer spent a lot of time thinking about how to design and hand drawn floorplan. Secondly, during the construction phase, creating a curved wall was also a challenge. In the end, we used GFRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum) to create the wall and ceiling shapes. This case also features custom-designed unique-shaped doors and utilizes a handle-free door opening method.
- Project Duration
- The project started in June 2019 and finished in October 2022.
Location: Ningbo, China - Operation Flow
- In consideration of consistency, try to choose natural materials and peaceful colors for floors, walls, furniture. Natural light combined with warm and comfortable furniture, the staggered texture will be more vigorous with time. The smart homes allows the client to easily switch between home mode, entertainment mode, or party mode. The nanny's room is not connected to the main space, and she can use the private elevator to access the kitchen or her own room without disturbing the client.
- Research
- Divide the space with water droplet, break through the rigid space boundary. Break the circle into curves and recombine to form different structural patterns. The beauty of curve lies in its bending, its flowing and its myriad changes, which can give people the most intuitive visual enjoyment. As Oscar Niemeyer said "I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves".
- Inspiration
- This design breaks the traditional square house pattern and extracts inspiration from water droplets. Water is the source of life. Imagining each water droplet as a distinct space, the various sizes and shapes of the droplets are combined to create a highly distinctive, dynamic, and aesthetically pleasing interior space. With the space form of a water droplets and the minimalist lifestyle concept, designer adhered to the design principle of "less is more".
