About Billund Spice Grinder

Billund is a spice grinder made for whole spices and seasoning blends. The grinding burr is placed at the top, so the grinder is turned upside down during use and leaves no residue on the table. An adjustment knob on top sets the coarseness of the grind. A silicone plug at the base allows easy filling with different spices or blends. The housing is made entirely of a bio-composite of wood cellulose fibres and oils extracted from wood pulp during paper making. The colourful design is inspired by building blocks.

Within the contemporary landscape of culinary object design, Sam Murley's Billund Spice Grinder emerges as a thoughtful meditation on the intersection of functional utility and aesthetic pleasure, embodying principles that trace lineage through Scandinavian design philosophy while engaging distinctly contemporary material sensibilities. The object's formal vocabulary speaks to a refined understanding of how cylindrical geometries communicate stability and containment, while the deliberate articulation of modular sections through color differentiation transforms a utilitarian tool into a compositional element worthy of kitchen display. The chromatic strategy proves particularly sophisticated, employing warm analogous progressions from deep terracotta through orange to golden yellow that evoke associations with the very spices the implement processes—turmeric, paprika, saffron—creating a semantic loop between container and contained. The matte elastomeric surface finish demonstrates careful consideration of haptic experience, promising tactile warmth and secure grip while simultaneously rejecting the clinical coldness often associated with kitchen implements. This image captures the design in its moment of performative revelation, the cascade of freshly ground spices serving as visual testimony to the object's efficacy while the surrounding whole spices and fresh herbs contextualize its purpose within broader culinary practice. The pairing of multiple colorways suggests a systematic approach to kitchen organization, where color-coding might differentiate spice varieties or grinding coarseness, introducing an element of visual play into quotidian food preparation. One might observe how the composition invites contemplation of the small rituals that structure domestic life, elevating the grinding of spices from mere task to sensory experience deserving of beautifully designed tools.

Production Technology
The housing of the Billund grinder is made entirely of a sustainable bio-composite.
The material comes from a combination of wood cellulose fibres and the oils that are squeezed out of wood pulp when making paper.
All of this ‘raw material’ wood can be traced back to sustainably managed forests and is actually ‘waste’ from other industries.
I am proud to use a low carbon footprint alternative to traditional plastic that doesn’t interfere with any food-production chain, unlike crop-based biomaterials.
Project Duration
The project started in Copenhagen in March 2021 and is now in production.
Operation Flow
This is called an upside-down grinder as the grinding burr is at the top of the product. This means you need to pick up the product and turn it upside-down when using. The benefit to this is that there are no residues left on the table when you put it down/lift it up. Also, it means that the coarseness adjustment is an easily accessible user friendly 'knob' on top of the product.
Inspiration
This grinder was made to inspire people to use more whole spices and different seasonings. Instead of having jars of different spices, why not have grinders? The idea was to inject more fun, playfulness and colour into a product that, traditionally, has a very different design language.
The colour palette was chosen by Danish designers, Stilleben, to reflect the wonderful colours of ingredients found in the kitchen.
It was important to use a responsible and sustainable approach to developing the product. Therefore, we used a ceramic grinder inside the product and a bio-composite housing.
