About Zhong Yuan No. 1 Maojian Tea

Zhong Yuan No. 1 is a packaging design for Maojian tea, a traditional Chinese tea grown in terraced fields. Because the flavor of the tea is light and mild, the package is kept subtle and refined. The tea can is made of tinplate with embossing and gold stamping, and matte and varnish finishes are combined. The capped shape of the can recalls a tea picker wearing a hat. The outer box is made of customized paper and is closed by a shaped belt inspired by the window frames of old tea farmer houses. Real tea leaves decorate the belt.

Within the contemporary landscape of luxury packaging design, TIGER PAN's Zhong Yuan No. 1 Maojian Tea emerges as a distinguished example of cultural synthesis, wherein traditional calligraphic heritage converses fluently with modern design sensibilities. The work demonstrates remarkable facility in balancing ornamental richness with compositional restraint, employing a limited yet potent palette of deep emerald green and burnished gold that speaks to enduring associations between these hues and notions of prosperity, natural vitality, and refined taste. The central emblem functions as the compositional anchor, integrating stylized characters with organic botanical forms in a manner that celebrates the artisanal nature of tea cultivation while projecting contemporary sophistication. Particularly noteworthy appears the subtle incorporation of topographic contour lines across the secondary panel, which may reference the mountainous terroirs from which premium tea varieties originate, thereby encoding geographical authenticity within the visual language. The staging of the package upon weathered timber against an atmospheric void punctuated by living pine foliage suggests a deliberate meditation on the relationship between cultivated refinement and natural origin. The designer seems to engage with longstanding visual traditions of scholarly appreciation, where the contemplation of fine materials and careful craftsmanship constitutes an aesthetic practice unto itself. The circular background element, rendered with painterly softness, evokes lunar imagery and the contemplative quietude associated with tea ceremony traditions. Viewers are invited to consider how contemporary design practice might honor heritage while speaking with distinctly modern visual eloquence, and to reflect upon the ritual significance embedded within the everyday act of preparing and sharing tea.

Unique Properties
Chinese traditional aesthetic of shaping a tea can. The bottle is shaped into an abstraction of capped tea-picker in a geometric way. All leaves are picked and cooked by their hands so the tea comes with their body's warmth or temperature. The outer box is locked by a shaped original mountain, telling consumers that tea is the best and of purity.

Production Technology
The tea can is made of tinplate, embossed and gold-stamped. The matte and varnish touch is combined and a sense of delicacy is given out. The outer box is made of customized paper and it comes with the idea of less is more. The belt, however, is made with exquisite embossment and stamping of the major icon, Central Land No.1. A simple box with a fine belt, is mixed to lower the psychological pressure on buyers when consuming the product. Yet, it still is a high-end but well-finished product.
Design Challenge
Inspired by the window frame pattern from the ancient houses of tea farmers, the sealing belt is designed into a traditional frame with the brand's name shown, which is decorated with the actual leaves of the tea. The exquisite techniques also helps to bring a sense of quality of the tea.
Project Duration
The project lasts 4 month, designed in Shenzhen
Operation Flow
How to save consumer's effort to look for an ideal product is the key challenge of this case. A distinctive symbol, a bright color, an explicit layout of info and a unitive serial system of package will help Wellmind to solve the problem, where consumers are able to recognize and pick up the products from far away.
Research
As the tea grows in terraced fields and its flavor is lighter and milder than usual tea, the package is made into a more implicative and sophisticated one.
Inspiration
The inspiration comes from the tea and its growing land, which is natural and an eyeful of green. Another factor inspiring the team is the traditional ancient budding aesthetics. With the hat like cap, the can is just like a tea picking farmer.Inspired by the window frame pattern from the ancient houses of tea farmers, the sealing belt is designed into a traditional frame with the brands name shown, which is decorated with the actual leaves of the tea.
