About Zhanjiang Chengfa Runyue Life Lab Center
Zhanjiang Chengfa Runyue is a life lab center and sales space located in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province. The interior covers 1391 square meters. The layout follows the angular form of the building and uses obtuse fold lines that widen views, bring in natural light and remove sharp corners. A central showcase opens onto an outdoor area that unites a stage, a fashion store and a cafe, while a separate exhibition zone remains quiet. Wood, limestone and treated terrazzo are used, and native plants improve indoor air quality.
Beijing Topace Architecture Design Ltd.'s Zhanjiang Chengfa Runyue Life Lab Center emerges as a compelling exemplar of contemporary hospitality architecture, wherein the studio demonstrates sophisticated command of spatial sequencing, material choreography, and atmospheric calibration. The design positions itself within evolving traditions of experiential retail and community-oriented commercial environments, spaces conceived to foster contemplation, connection, and sensory delight rather than mere transaction. The double-height atrium volume achieves notable success in balancing monumentality with intimacy, deploying the stepped terrazzo platform and varied seating arrangements to create zones of human-scaled comfort within the generous architectural envelope. Particularly accomplished is the chromatic strategy, where the predominantly neutral palette of honed stone, natural timber, and pale terrazzo establishes visual quietude against which strategic color interventions—the terracotta seating clusters, the vermillion linear benches, and most dramatically the amber-gold glass block installation—register with heightened presence. The glass block wall merits special attention as both functional light-filtering element and luminous artwork, its warm chromatic glow suggesting stained glass traditions while maintaining thoroughly contemporary expression. The biophilic integration demonstrates thoughtful consideration of psychological wellbeing, with the substantial indoor tree and accompanying plantings introducing organic geometry and living presence into the architectural composition. Through extensive glazing, the design establishes profound dialogue with exterior conditions, capturing the transient beauty of sunset skies as integral to the interior experience. One might consider how this work invites reflection on architecture's capacity to orchestrate mood, facilitate community, and celebrate the poetry of natural light transformed through considered spatial design.

They undergo only essential protective treatments like corrosion prevention to retain authentic textures, and the dynamic contrasts between different materials evoke a natural, soothing atmosphere.
The terrazzo flooring, treated with crystallization, enhances moisture resistance. The native plants improve indoor air quality, reflecting an ecologically friendly philosophy. - Design Challenge
- The key challenge is transforming a traditional sales center into a hybrid, multifunctional life lab.
This project prioritizes the harmony between people, nature, and city to reshape community spirit. The hybrid traffic flow design adapts to the life patterns of targeted groups, while the multifunctional space planning unlocks diverse lifestyles. Moreover, the integration of outdoor scenery and natural light creates an open design that redefines the commercial space for dynamic modern living. - Project Duration
- Located in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, the project began its design phase in Beijing in 2023 and reached completion in October 2024.
- Operation Flow
- Following the angular layout of the building, the design uses obtuse angled fold lines to maximize views and bring in more natural light while eliminating sharp corners for a safer sense.
