About Yuzhou Langting Mansion Exhibition Center

Yuzhou Langting Mansion is an exhibition center built in Qingdao, China. The design takes its inspiration from layered mountains, water and clouds. The roof follows the shape of rising and falling peaks and is clad in dark grey metal verge boards. The central part uses antique copper drawn aluminium squares to suggest multiple ranges of hills, set against a glass curtain wall. A mirror water pool connects the building with the site and completes the view. The planning follows the ritual order, the central axis and the courtyards of the ancient city of Jimo.

Within the tradition of contemporary exhibition architecture that honors regional building heritage while embracing innovative structural expression, Tengyuan Design's Yuzhou Langting Mansion Exhibition Center exemplifies a thoughtful synthesis of ceremonial spatial sequence and refined material craft, the photograph captures the entry processional canopy at the liminal moment of twilight when artificial illumination and natural light achieve perfect equilibrium, revealing the architects' sophisticated understanding of temporal experience in architectural perception, the timber lattice structure references traditional construction methods while its precise geometry and slender proportions speak to contemporary engineering capabilities, creating a dialogue between ancestral building wisdom and present-day technical refinement, the axial composition establishes a powerful sense of approach and anticipation, the converging lines drawing visitors physically and psychologically toward the illuminated pavilion that serves as both destination and threshold, white sculptural elements positioned along the pathway introduce organic counterpoint to the architectural orthogonality, their cloud-like forms perhaps suggesting natural phenomena or traditional decorative motifs abstracted into contemporary formal language, the chromatic relationship between the warm timber tones and the extraordinary sky gradient demonstrates the designers' attention to the building's temporal performance, understanding that architecture exists not merely as static object but as dynamic participant in daily and seasonal cycles, the pitched roof pavilion visible at terminus recalls traditional residential typologies, suggesting the exhibition center's function as gateway to domestic architectural experience, viewers might contemplate how contemporary design practices can honor building traditions while creating distinctly present-moment spatial experiences

Unique Properties
The experiment area is a breakthrough for the spatial definition of "stacked yard, symmetrical axis, broad opening and closing". It reaches the spatial continuity by smooth scenic design. The sales office echoes the mirror water like a landscape painting. The regional planning extracts three elements of Jimo ancient city respectively are "ritual sequence, central axis and courtyard". The courtyard runs through the main axis step by step and merges with the architectural space.
Dimensions & Packaging
The whole sales office building is about 31 meters long from north to south and 29 meters long from east to west. The roof is made of two parts of arc structure. The 40 thick C20 fine aggregate concrete is troweled as it is poured. The maximum radius of arc of the whole roof is 5.5 meters and the minimum radius of arc is 2.9 meters.

Production Technology
The architectural roof extracts the shape of alpine ups and downs as dark grey metal verge board. The central part create a sense of multiple ranges of hills by antique copper drawn aluminum square. It develops a sense of contrast between reality and reality with glass curtain wall as background. At the entrance, the elements such as Bogu framework, Dougong and lantern of the local ancient city are extracted.
Design Challenge
In the design process of the project, due to the tight construction period, designers constantly use the model to explore the combination relationship of building volume, materials and space. The continuous deformation of the curved roof is deduced to develop a sense of overlapping peaks. The selection of materials has also gone through repeated deliberation which presents a certain viewing experience in a short time.
Project Duration
The project started in January 8, 2019 in Qingdao and finished in June 25, 2019 in Qingdao.
Operation Flow
Through the continuous investigation of Jimo culture and habit, designers get acknowledgement of the local residents' feeling for mountains and rivers. It also gave us the design inspiration for this time. The setting of mirror water realizes the connection between the building and the site by forming a complete picture. Jimo's landmark site is to be built based on the principles of construction period, cost, client's expectation, quality and risk.
Research
Jimo district is a famous historical and cultural city with a history of 1400 years. It is one of the roots of eastern Shandong culture, an ancient Chinese cultural city and a famous commercial city. Designers should respect the local culture in the design and respond design to the local culture. At the same time, local cultural characteristics shall be used in the design. Take cultural return as a breakthrough point to create a new life style of fashion, implication and cultural temperament.
Inspiration
The greatness of a man lends glory to Jimo, which originated from the integration of spiritual mountain and holy water. The inspiration came from the spiritual mountains, water and cloud. Designers intend to develop a brand new Neo-Chinese style exhibition area with the theme of layer-spread mountains and overlooking view on the cloud. The exhibition area adopts the theme of "Guanlan Yunju"and extracts Chinese traditional element of ritual order to develop the whole planning structure.
