About Shenyang Hunnan Exhibition Center

Shenyang Hunnan is an exhibition center located beside the Hunhe River in Shenyang, China. The building covers 1400 square meters and combines exhibition space with an observation tower. A viewing platform stands at a height of 45 meters, and four floors of smaller platforms below can serve as a small water bar and a book bar. The facade is made of aluminum plate with partial gradual perforations. Large areas of glass connect the interior and the exterior. The curved form follows the scenery of the Hunhe River and gives the district a new river viewing point.

Within the evolving discourse of twenty-first century civic architecture, Tengyuan Design's Exhibition Center stands as a compelling meditation on the synthesis of organic form and functional monumentality, representing a sophisticated engagement with parametric design methodologies that have come to define ambitious cultural institutions worldwide. The structure's formal language appears to draw upon the legacy of fluid architectural expression pioneered in recent decades, wherein buildings transcend their utilitarian origins to become sculptural landmarks that reshape urban identity and collective experience. The architects demonstrate remarkable compositional intelligence in orchestrating the dialogue between the horizontal exhibition podium and the ascending tower element, creating a dynamic interplay of gravitational forces that suggests both earthbound rootedness and aspirational verticality. The podium's serpentine profile achieves a quality of frozen motion, its continuous white surface wrapping interior volumes with the seamless elegance of draped fabric rendered in permanent material form. Technical accomplishment manifests particularly in the tower's double-curved curtain wall system, where the geometric complexity of the twisted form necessitates sophisticated computational design and precision fabrication methodologies. The warm luminosity emanating from within transforms the tower into a beacon element at dusk, suggesting the building's role as a gathering point and cultural catalyst within its urban context. The rendering captures what might be termed the architecture's performative dimension: its capacity to dramatize the transition between day and night, to mediate between human scale and urban monumentality, and to propose new formal vocabularies for collective space. One might contemplate how such structures participate in the ongoing evolution of architectural meaning, inviting consideration of what forms best embody contemporary aspirations for cultural exchange, civic pride, and technological achievement.

Production Technology
The facade of the building is made of aluminum plate, with partial gradual perforations. During the day, the snowflakes shadow are scattered on the building. Large area of glass is used around the building enclosure to achieve the mutual penetration of the internal and external space of the building without boundary.
Design Challenge
With modern design language, the architecture highlights the main body of the building, semi enclosed garden space, combined with waterscape, giving people a new visual experience. The viewing tower is raised by 45 meters to fully appreciate the beautiful scenery of the Hunhe River. The front court is a plaza facing the city, and the back court is open for the residential area. The arched space floating out of the ground forms the entrance and exit image of the whole building.
Project Duration
The project started in October 25, 2019 in Shenyang and finished in November 12, 2019 in Shenyang.
Operation Flow
When visiting the base, the beautiful scenery of Hunhe River gradually comes into view through the gradual rise of UAV, and finally achieves the best viewing effect at a height of more than 40 meters. This also gives the original design inspiration that breaks the original exhibition center layout, adds the viewing tower which can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of Hunhe River, combining with the modern simple design style, and showing the multi-dimensional urban power.
Research
The project, composed of five adjacent plots, is located in the East Lake plot, Hunnan district, Shenyang city, between the east 2nd ring road and the east 3rd ring road. People can directly and quickly arrive at the central urban district from the site by Dongta Bridge and Changqing Bridge. By means of the architectural scheme combined with landscape tower and sales center, integrate the modern simple design technique, introduce fashionable elements, and created new regional business card.
Inspiration
The design inspiration comes from the superior landscape resources of Hunhe River, breaking the traditional urban outline, drawing the beautiful scenery of Hunhe River from the bottom to the top with beautiful curves, combining with the modern simple design style, and showing the multi-dimensional urban power. Based on the concept of Hunhe River water, the planning form introduces the Hunhe River water.
