About Yunhai Shimen Industry Park

Yunhai Shimen is a mixed-use industry park in Qujiang District, Quzhou, Zhejiang, China. The design draws on the mountainous landscape of the region, using clean geometric forms of staggered towers and cascading platforms to recall mountains and clouds. Instead of a closed retail podium, the complex unfolds into a series of connected outdoor platforms set at several levels. These platforms, the tower sky lobbies and a central gallery named Cloud Deck host public gatherings and events of different scales. The main structure is built of reinforced concrete.

Yunhai Shimen Industry Park by Minquan Wang represents a significant achievement in contemporary urban design visualization, demonstrating the sophisticated integration of commercial tower development with generous public landscape amenity that has become increasingly central to progressive metropolitan planning discourse, the aerial perspective rendering captures the development at the evocative threshold moment of dusk when artificial illumination begins to assert itself against the fading natural light, creating a visual narrative of urban vitality and around-the-clock habitation, the five-tower configuration displays thoughtful volumetric variety with stepped heights and articulated rooftop profiles that avoid monotonous repetition while maintaining coherent architectural language through consistent facade treatment of vertical emphasis and warm-toned lighting that suggests interior occupation and commercial activity, the generous parkland occupying the western portion of the composition reflects contemporary emphasis on green infrastructure and public health considerations, with its organic pathway network and scattered seating areas illuminated by warm-toned fixtures inviting evening promenade and social gathering, technically the rendering achieves remarkable atmospheric conviction through careful attention to light behavior at twilight including the subtle color temperature gradations from warm foreground illumination to cooler distant tones and the progressive softening of edges in receding planes that creates convincing spatial depth across the extensive urban panorama, the surrounding residential context rendered in cooler neutral tones establishes the development as a luminous focal point within its metropolitan setting while the arterial roadways with their captured light trails suggest connectivity and accessibility, viewers might contemplate how such visualizations function simultaneously as planning documents and aspirational narratives shaping collective imagination about urban futures and the possibilities for harmonious coexistence between density and nature.

Production Technology
Reinforced concrete for main structure; steel moment frame for the central "Cloud Deck" structure; Insulated glass units of low-e laminated glass with hidden ventilator for tower curtain wall; Anodized aluminium, stainless steel, and granite for exterior cladding.
Design Challenge
The client aims at creating an unconventional mixed-use development where a large amount of community functions is infused into the retail complex. This not only creates problematic adjacencies but also contradicts with the limitation of space. To fully exploit the civic potential of the project, an important decision was made early on in the design process to maximize utilization of outdoor spaces as an extension of GFA accountable spaces so as to expand the reach of public events while remain complaint with planning/zoning requirements.
Project Duration
Project design started in August 2023 and was awarded in open competition in September 2023. The project is currently in the process of planning approval clearing.
Operation Flow
The project encourages public interactions by creating occupiable outdoor platforms spanning across the site at multiple levels. These platforms echo the public programs of their corresponding interior spaces and become extensions thereof. The massing arrangements between the towers, the podium, the central Cloud Deck gallery, and the sunken plaza work synergistically to create an focal point where visitors could gather for concentrated events such as performances and talks. Sky lobbies are inserted at the crowns of each tower to highlight them with public activities. These together create a multi-level public space system to accommodate to events and gatherings of various scales and qualities.
Research
A survey of the project site was made to determine its urban gesture in relation to important contextual elements such as adjacent park/amenity spaces, urban programs, and masterplanning motifs. A research into the city's cultural and geographical contexts was also conducted which highlighted its celebrated natural landscape as an important inspiration of project design.
Inspiration
Drawing inspiration from the mountainous natural landscape in Qujiang, Yunhai Shimen lends itself as an analogue to mountains and clouds with clean, geometric forms of staggering towers and cascading platforms.
