About Yale Smart Video Doorbell
Yale Smart is a video doorbell designed for home entrances. The doorbell has rounded corners and a discreet form that suits different architectural styles. The camera provides a 1080p full high definition image, a 154 degree field of view and night vision for clear footage. The footage is viewed in the Yale Home app, which sends a call when the doorbell rings and detailed notifications when motion is detected. Human detection is included, and parcel detection is available with a subscription. Durable materials allow outdoor use.
*Threshold Guardian* exemplifies the convergence of heritage craftsmanship values with contemporary connected living paradigms, positioning Yale, ASSA ABLOY's Video Doorbell within a lineage of domestic security innovation spanning centuries of lock and access control expertise. The composition deliberately stages the device at the architectural threshold, that liminal zone between public and private realms that has long occupied symbolic significance in domestic design traditions. The bifurcated background speaks to this transitional nature, with the earthen texture of the stucco wall suggesting permanence and shelter while the vibrant yellow door panel evokes welcome, optimism, and the warmth of home. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the device's material articulation, where the white housing achieves visual lightness despite robust construction, and the black fascia creates sophisticated contrast while functionally housing optical and sensor elements with elegant economy. The designer demonstrates particular sensitivity to residential integration, achieving a form factor that commands appropriate presence without overwhelming adjacent architectural surfaces. The circular bell icon, rendered with restrained minimalism, connects to centuries of doorbell and calling card traditions while signaling contemporary interaction paradigms. Chromatic choices reflect thoughtful consideration of typical residential palettes, with the neutral white ensuring visual compatibility across diverse architectural contexts while the black interface panel provides necessary contrast for user orientation. The deliberate staging against contrasting surfaces invites contemplation of how security technology might enhance rather than intrude upon domestic aesthetics, suggesting that protection and beauty need not exist in tension. One might consider how such devices reshape our relationship with the threshold, transforming the moment of arrival into an opportunity for connection regardless of physical presence.

- Production Technology
- We wanted a discrete and elegant design that provided a premium look and feel to the hardware. Our video doorbell is a blend of aesthetics and function. We focused on an intuitive design, making it easy to use, so anyone can feel secure without sacrificing style and chose durable materials to withstand outdoor exposure. The use of 3D design tools and printing enabled us the create the perfect curves, giving it a neutral and soft appearance that blends well with different architectural styles.
- Design Challenge
- Here we needed to create a solution that would give the user three options for how to power the doorbell so that they could ensure that their device was always powered in a way that best suited them. We needed to have a mounting solution that was able to support the different power options, while at the same time giving the user the possibility to angle the doorbell if needed. We used a fake wall to test the different design iterations until we developed a solution we were happy addressed this.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2022 in Malmö, Sweden. We first exhibited the new smart camera range at IFA Berlin in September 2023 and then launched the device in January 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The Video Doorbell can easily connect directly to the Internet and then be operated from anywhere in the world with a single application, the Yale Home app, using a mobile phone for smarter monitoring of your doorstep and driveway. It will detect motion and then light up the doorbell button to easily guide visitors where to press, homeowners will also get a "call" to notify them of a guest's presence. If anyone tries to steal the doorbell, a tamper alert will be sent to users' phones.
- Research
- We interviewed all the market regions to understand what features were most important to them in a smart doorbell, and to determine how competition looked in their region using market research, surveys, and interviews. We tested and evaluated a lot of competitive devices to understand the areas we saw a need for improvement on, like the mounting solution support of multiple power solutions to perfect these shortcomings within our own device.
- Inspiration
- The doorbell lets you keep an eye on your doorstep and know what's happening, regardless of the time or the weather, while ensuring you never miss a visitor or delivery. It aims to reduce trigger notifications sent to users thanks to built-in AI capabilities to provide you with up-to-date information regarding the security of your doorstep and driveway. It integrates with other Yale smart products so you can check who is at the door in the app and if safe unlock the door with a Yale Smart Lock.
