About Within The Sunlit Haven Interior Renovation

Within The Sunlit Haven is an interior renovation of the ground floor of a 40 year old family residence in Taiwan. The 39.6 square meter space was dim and restricted before the work. The foyer, living room and dining room are joined into one open common area suited to gatherings. Lighting is kept consistent and adjustable to reduce eye strain, and the fixture above the dining table can serve as a reading light. The metal posts of the shoe bench also act as grab bars. Only non-toxic and eco friendly materials are used.

Erin Guo's Within The Sunlit Haven Interior Renovation participates in the evolving discourse of contemporary residential design where spatial generosity, material authenticity, and experiential warmth converge to redefine domestic environments for contemporary inhabitation patterns characterized by fluid movement between functional zones, openness to natural light, and the integration of contemplative moments within daily routines, this intervention demonstrates particular accomplishment in its orchestration of threshold and transition, establishing the entry sequence as a moment of pause and reflection through the sculptural placement of the standing mirror element, which functions simultaneously as functional object enabling the preparatory rituals of arrival and departure, spatial marker articulating the boundary between circulation and living zones, and aesthetic gesture introducing refined material and geometric language that previews the design vocabulary extending throughout the residence, the compositional intelligence evident in the arrangement rewards sustained observation, the mirror assembly positioned slightly off-center generates dynamic asymmetrical balance while creating a visual corridor that draws the eye through the reflective plane toward spaces beyond, the coordination between the mirror's vertical emphasis and the horizontal extension of the marble wall panel establishes a sophisticated perpendicular relationship that organizes the spatial perception while maintaining openness and flow, the material palette reveals discerning selection and juxtaposition, the warm-toned natural wood flooring provides a unifying ground plane whose organic grain variation and tactile presence anchor the composition in sensory authenticity, while the cool-toned marble-effect wall treatment introduces a note of refined luxury without overwhelming the restrained overall character, the metallic rose-gold framing of the mirror occupies a careful middle position between warm and cool chromatic territories, serving as harmonic bridge that integrates the broader material conversation, the lighting design demonstrates particular sophistication in its layered approach, combining abundant natural illumination harvested through generous fenestration with carefully integrated architectural lighting including the linear LED details that dematerialize ceiling edges and the discrete accent illumination within the media alcove, creating a luminous environment that modulates across the diurnal cycle while maintaining consistent spatial legibility and atmospheric warmth, the spatial organization suggests thoughtful consideration of contemporary residential patterns wherein traditional room divisions yield to interconnected zones that support multiple simultaneous activities, the visible kitchen area in the background indicates openness to culinary social engagement, the foreground circulation zone accommodates movement and transition, and the middle-ground living area implies gathering and repose, all unified through material and chromatic continuity that reinforces spatial cohesion while allowing functional differentiation, thematically, this interior renovation appears to explore questions of domesticity in contemporary life, how spaces can provide sanctuary and restorative calm amid accelerated urban rhythms, how material authenticity and tactile richness can ground experience in an increasingly dematerialized culture, and how geometric clarity and spatial openness can accommodate the fluidity and multiplicity of contemporary inhabitation, the design invites consideration of how residential environments shape daily experience, how the quality of light, the character of materials, the proportions of space, and the choreography of movement through sequential zones contribute to well-being, creativity, and the construction of home as both physical shelter and psychological anchor, viewers might contemplate how such spatial interventions balance aesthetic aspiration with functional necessity, how design choices encode values about comfort, beauty, privacy, and connection, and how the built environment of daily life participates in the ongoing project of creating meaningful dwelling.

Unique Properties
This project’s aim is to transform the dim and restricted 1st floor of a 40-year-old family residence into a cozy common area. The owners are a mother in her 60s and her son. Their love for gatherings and nature is incorporated into the design. The designer carefully plans out the lighting for the mother’s eye health, and special metal grab bars at the foyer for accessibility. Only non-toxic and eco materials are used in this project, putting the family’s well-being upfront in the design.
Dimensions & Packaging
Floor size: 39.6 sqm (1 floor)
Production Technology
The project uses only non-toxic materials such as certified 0 VOC emulsion paint and lumber, alongside with eco-friendly calcium silicate boards. Additionally, the home is equipped with a ceiling concealed AC unit and an ERV system for better air quality and energy efficiency. On the ceiling at the entrance is a circular maintenance hatch, convenient and aesthetically pleasing.
Design Challenge
The space before renovation was troubled with subpar lighting. The designer made the decision to replace the window glass with better transparency.

The house itself is a 40-year-old building; hence it came with many problems that plague other similar architectures, most notably water leakage and damage. After completely removing the original interior, returning the residence to skeleton, the issues were dealt with, and the designer was able to plan the layout from scratch.
Project Duration
The project was finished in 2024, located in Changhua, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
Considering the owner’s age, the designer ensures the consistency of the lighting throughout the interior to minimize eye strain. The brightness and color temperature of the light strips can be easily adjusted according to needs, the light fixture above the dining table can be transformed into a reading light. Additionally, the metal support posts of the shoe bench at the foyer doubles as grab bars for accessibility.
Inspiration
Hidden in the design are the imageries of nature, for hiking being one of the family’s favorite activities. Rounded corners on the ceiling are inspired by winding mountain passes, and the metal strips on the dining room walls form the image of sunlight peeking through the mountains.

To improve the circulation, the designer connects the foyer, the living room and then the dining room, combining them into an open-concept common area suitable for multiple people to enjoy the space together.
