About Whispers of Light Residential House
Whispers of Light is a residential interior design for an apartment of 129 square meters in Taipei. Public areas are placed at the center, while private rooms are set on the left and right sides. The layout reduces disturbance between family members with different daily schedules. Soft gray and white tones, mineral paint and wood veneer create a layered effect inspired by watercolor painting. A large structural beam is covered with mirrored metal panels and rounded corners, and the space below the beam serves as a hallway.
Whispers of Light Residential House by Chou-Chun, Kao exemplifies a refined contemporary approach to residential interior architecture that synthesizes principles of spatial fluidity, material authenticity, and sculptural innovation within the framework of domestic inhabitation, positioning this work within broader design conversations addressing the phenomenology of dwelling, the integration of organic forms within orthogonal architectural vocabularies, and the application of biophilic design strategies that seek to reconnect inhabitants with natural rhythms and forms even within urban built environments. The design demonstrates particular compositional achievement through its sophisticated tripartite spatial organization, articulating distinct functional zones for dining, living, and media consumption while maintaining visual and experiential continuity through carefully calibrated sightlines, material transitions, and lighting strategies that guide movement and establish atmospheric gradients across the domestic landscape, the transparent glass partition functioning simultaneously as protective threshold and visual connection, allowing light and view to penetrate while maintaining acoustic and environmental separation, a compositional device that rewards extended contemplation for its nuanced balance of openness and enclosure. The ceiling treatment represents the work's most distinctive formal innovation, deploying curved, draped, organic geometries that introduce softness, movement, and sculptural drama into what might otherwise resolve as a rectilinear contemporary interior, this billowing fabric-like surface suggesting natural formations while remaining clearly articulated as designed architectural element, the concealed lighting transforming the ceiling from neutral overhead plane into luminous focal element that bathes the space in warm diffused radiance, demonstrating technical facility in lighting design and spatial choreography. The material palette reveals sophisticated chromatic and textural intelligence, juxtaposing cool architectural greys with warm earth tones, polished reflective surfaces with matte absorptive finishes, natural stone veining with uniform manufactured planes, creating a richly layered sensory environment that invites both visual appreciation and imagined tactile engagement, the recurring marble material with its amber and grey veining providing visual continuity between horizontal floor plane and vertical wall surfaces while its natural patterning introduces organic irregularity that humanizes the space. The work appears to explore themes of sanctuary, refuge, and the contemporary dwelling as retreat from external demands, creating an environment that supports contemplation, conversation, rest, and the intimate rituals of daily life, the compressed tonal range and warm lighting suggesting evening hours when the home becomes haven, the carefully curated furnishings and restrained decorative vocabulary allowing space itself and the quality of light to become primary experiential content. One might observe resonances with the Japanese concept of ma or meaningful void, the Scandinavian hygge emphasis on cozy domestic sanctuary, and the broader contemporary design discourse addressing wellness, mindfulness, and the home as therapeutic environment, though the work synthesizes these influences into a cohesive personal vision rather than simply reproducing established aesthetic formulas, the integration of the sculptural ceiling element suggesting perhaps some awareness of organic modernist precedents while the overall restraint and material honesty align with minimalist principles that privilege essential form and authentic material expression. This residential interior invites consideration of how architectural design shapes daily experience, how spatial quality and material character influence mood and well-being, how the contemporary dwelling might balance technological integration with human-scaled intimacy, and how design can create environments that support not merely functional requirements but psychological and spiritual nourishment, offering viewers and potential inhabitants a space that appears to honor the acts of gathering, resting, and simply being present within a carefully composed environment where light, form, material, and spatial sequence work in concert to elevate the ordinary rituals of domestic life into occasions for aesthetic appreciation and sensory pleasure.

- Unique Properties
- This case creates a defined living space that accommodates family members with different lifestyles. Public areas are centrally located, while private quarters are designated on the left and right, ensuring minimal disruption. The design beautifully incorporates the homeowner's passion for watercolor painting, featuring soft gray and white tones that play with light and shadow. This combination produces a layered, watercolor-like effect, infusing the home with a tranquil and artistic ambiance.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This project involved the renovation of a newly built apartment with a total interior area of 129 square meters. The largest structural beam was incorporated into the layout, turning the space beneath it into a hallway that connects the entryway and multi-functional room, minimizing any sense of spatial oppression.

- Production Technology
- The materials and elements used include mineral paint, metal fixtures, embossed glass, marble, floor tiles, sheer curtains, wood veneer, and titanium-coated metal panels. The design features rich mineral paint as a base, paired with natural stone incorporating green and gold elements, offering a distinct style compared to traditional black and white marble, while subtly enhancing the space's color palette. Additionally, the mineral paint is applied to the headboard wall in the master bedroom, using three shades to create a watercolor-like gradient effect.
- Design Challenge
- This project involved merging two independent spaces to create a more spacious layout, but it faced challenges due to the presence of a large beam. The designer cleverly chose to conceal the beam within the circulation path, allowing for a visual extension between the living room and dining area. To avoid creating a sense of oppression from the beam, the designer applied rounded R-corner treatments and covered the beam with mirrored metal panels. This approach not only enhances the spatial extension but also minimizes the beam's presence.
- Project Duration
- The project is located in the heart of Taipei City, an area known for its peaceful and cultural ambiance. The project was completed in two phases: the design phase from July to December 2022, and the construction phase from May to August 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The primary motivation behind this renovation was to create a space that allows family members to interact and share common areas while minimizing disruptions caused by differing lifestyle schedule. Additionally, considering the homeowner frequently hosts guests, the designer divided the kitchen into separate zones with both an inner and outer kitchen, and added a pass-through window with glass, making the cooking and dining process more seamless and interactive.
- Research
- This project renovates a newly built space by merging two units and rethinking the layout. Public areas form a central hub, connecting private quarters on each side, while the enlarged living room accommodates hosting without sacrificing privacy. To mitigate the impact of a large beam, decorative techniques and material variations create a layered, open feel. The shoe cabinet, divided into three units with embossed glass, allows natural light to flow while addressing feng shui concerns. This design balances function and aesthetics, enhancing connectivity and privacy.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by homeowner's love for watercolor, the design treats the space as a canvas, using warm gray and beige paints with wooden elements to achieve a watercolor effect. The delicate colors of watercolor create a dreamlike atmosphere, layering light and shadow to evoke depth. This enhances functionality while adding a natural rhythm to the home.Natural stone and green-gold accents add luxury, while light fixtures create reflections transform the space, blending modern aesthetics with warmth.
