About Waltz of Light Residence
Waltz of Light is an interior design for a 96 square meter apartment in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, planned for a family of four. Curved forms flow from the ceiling to the walls and floors. A metallic ceiling arc in the living room forms the main focal point, set against milky brown, light gray and dark wood tones. A continuous light band links the foyer, dining area and semi-open study. Stone-pattern surfaces, spray-paint finishes and mirrored textures guide the light along the curves. Lighting, air conditioning and curtain tracks are concealed within the curved forms to save ceiling height.
YU-TI WU's Waltz of Light Residence exemplifies contemporary residential design's capacity to transform quotidian dwelling into experiential sanctuary through the strategic deployment of architectural form, atmospheric lighting, and material restraint, situating itself within design traditions that privilege spatial serenity and phenomenological experience over decorative excess, a philosophical lineage traceable through modernist principles of truth-to-materials and spatial flow while incorporating softer organic geometries that temper geometric severity with biomorphic warmth. The compositional achievement centers on the spectacular ceiling intervention, a sculptural element that functions simultaneously as illumination source, spatial anchor, and aesthetic focal point, its concentric circular geometry establishing radial symmetry that organizes the rectilinear architecture beneath while the reflective metallic insert creates dimensional depth and luminous intensity that rewards contemplation, the interplay between curved organic form overhead and orthogonal architectural boundaries below generating dynamic tension resolved through careful proportional relationships and material transitions. Chromatic sophistication reveals itself in the nuanced calibration of warm neutrals that create cohesive visual temperature while maintaining sufficient tonal variation to define spatial boundaries and material identities, the palette demonstrating restraint and maturity in its resistance to chromatic drama, instead achieving atmospheric effect through subtle gradations within a compressed range, a strategy that amplifies the impact of metallic accents and the brilliant ceiling feature which reads as punctuation within the neutral field. Technical facility manifests in the seamless integration of multiple lighting systems that layer ambient, accent, and decorative illumination to create temporally flexible atmosphere, the cove lighting along architectural edges particularly successful in dissolving boundaries between ceiling planes and walls to enhance spatial generosity, while the herringbone flooring pattern introduces textural rhythm and directional energy that guides movement through the space without disrupting overall serenity. The featured wall surface displaying subtle veining and the precise metallic television surround demonstrate material selection and detailing that balance natural character with contemporary fabrication, grounding the design in tactile reality while maintaining visual refinement. Thematically, Waltz of Light Residence explores domesticity as refuge and restoration, the urban density visible through transparent thresholds serving not as destination but as backdrop against which interior sanctuary achieves meaning, the design proposing that contemporary dwelling might function as mediating membrane between individual inhabitant and collective metropolis, offering withdrawal without isolation, privacy without imprisonment, the circular ceiling feature perhaps suggesting cosmic order, celestial protection, or mandala-like centering that grounds chaotic urban existence in geometric harmony and luminous calm. The spatial flow from intimate foreground seating through transparent threshold toward exterior prospect creates narrative progression from personal to public realms while the return journey offers psychological retreat, the architecture thus facilitating both outlook and inward focus according to inhabitant needs and temporal rhythms. One might observe how light itself operates as primary material here, not merely illuminating surfaces but sculpting space, creating hierarchy, establishing mood, and marking temporal passage as natural daylight wanes and integrated artificial sources increasingly assert presence, the design inviting viewers to consider how atmospheric conditions shape psychological states and how residential architecture might orchestrate daily experience through choreographed phenomenological effects, asking whether contemporary dwelling can transcend mere shelter to become instrument of wellbeing, spiritual centering, and aesthetic nourishment.

- Unique Properties
- Upon entry, the arc-shaped ceiling commands attention, with metallic tones spotlighting it against milky brown, gray, and deep wood hues. Arcs dissolve into walls and floors, creating fluidity, while light and shadow animate the curves, hence 'Waltz of Flowing Light.' The stone TV wall with indirect lighting echoes this rhythm. A continuous light band links dining and study areas, guiding movement. Arched cabinetry, corners, and door panels unify the social space, giving it a seamless, theatrical quality.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The 96 square meters new apartment is planned with 3 plus 1 rooms. The most notable adjustment is in the master bedroom, where the walk-in closet was expanded outward to provide both display and storage functionality. In the social area, the living room serves as the core, linking the dining space, foyer, and study. Enclosed partitions were removed to preserve openness. The semi-open study features a daybed, maintaining visual transparency while also functioning as a restful corner. Overall, arcs and light bands connect the layout, ensuring a cohesive stage-like identity.

- Production Technology
- The space's primary palette consists of milky brown, light gray, and coffee hues, exuding warmth and softness. Rose-gold and metallic accents punctuate the scheme, resonating with the dark central metal ceiling feature to create a balanced visual rhythm. Large surfaces of stone-pattern laminates and coatings are paired with spray-paint finishes and mirrored textures, enriching the play of light along curved transitions. The flooring is laid diagonally, breaking away from rigid grids and adding further depth and flow to the ambiance.
- Design Challenge
- A key challenge lay in integrating smart-home systems with the building's original conditions. Limited ceiling height had to accommodate lighting, air conditioning, and curtain tracks. The designer cleverly concealed these within curved forms and light bands to prevent the ceiling from appearing compressed. In the study, low beams were skillfully resolved with spanning light strips that ensured both brightness and a unified look. This required precise construction coordination, ultimately achieving a balance between function and aesthetics.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in June 2025 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Upon completion, the homeowners remarked that the space feels as refined as a hotel suite. The signature arc-shaped ceiling and metallic centerpiece in the living room became a memorable hallmark that impressed every visitor. The children enjoy creating and playing in their own rooms, while the couple often spends time in the open living and dining areas, savoring the layered interplay of light and shadow. Feedback consistently affirmed that the design met their original expectations, successfully delivering a residence with a distinct character.
- Research
- In Kaohsiung's Gushan District, this 96 m2 apartment for a family of four features arcs flowing from the ceiling to the walls and floors, creating rhythmic continuity. The metallic living room ceiling arc anchors the space like a spotlight, contrasting milky brown, gray, and dark wood. The open social area links the foyer, dining, and study, with a continuous light band as the spatial axis. Stone TV wall, arched doors, and cabinetry soften transitions. Private zones use color to express personality. Homeowners praised its hotel-like quality.
