About Vertical Harmony Residential

Vertical Harmony is a residential interior design for a 324 square meter townhouse in Taiwan. The five story layout is arranged as a vertical hierarchy for a three generation family. The first two floors join indoor and outdoor areas through a dual media living room, an integrated kitchen and dining space, folding doors, sunken seating and a lounge bar. Private suites occupy the third and fourth floors, including an accessible senior suite beside the elevator. The top floor serves as a fitness and social area. Mirrors, earth toned materials and landscape stone guide movement.

Hui Ting Wang's Vertical Harmony Residential exemplifies the contemporary movement within residential interior architecture toward spaces that honor both material authenticity and atmospheric refinement, situating itself within a broader design discourse that seeks to transcend the sterile minimalism of mid-century revivals while avoiding the ornamental excess of traditionalist approaches. The composition demonstrates accomplished spatial orchestration, with the open-plan arrangement allowing visual and circulatory continuity between functional zones while maintaining distinct spatial definition through subtle shifts in ceiling height, flooring pattern orientation, and lighting quality. The herringbone parquet flooring represents a particularly successful formal decision, its directional patterning generating visual momentum that propels the eye through the space while its warm honey tonality establishes an enveloping chromatic foundation that unifies disparate elements into coherent whole. The ceiling treatment reveals sophisticated understanding of how horizontal planes shape spatial perception, the tray configuration with its stepped perimeter and integrated cove lighting creating an impression of enhanced verticality and architectural gravitas that elevates what might otherwise read as standard residential volume into something approaching the ceremonial. The lighting strategy demonstrates technical accomplishment, layering natural illumination from the generous window wall with ambient recessed fixtures, decorative sculptural elements, and concealed architectural lighting to produce an environment that adapts gracefully across the diurnal cycle while maintaining consistent atmospheric character. The material palette speaks to discerning restraint, favoring tonal subtlety and textural variation over chromatic contrast, a decision that allows the inherent qualities of wood grain, leather surface, and plaster finish to assert presence without competing for attention, suggesting a design philosophy that values material honesty and aging patina over static perfection. The selection and placement of the branching chandelier above the dining ensemble introduces organic naturalism into an otherwise orthogonal composition, its form seemingly arrested mid-growth, bringing biophilic resonance and visual poetry to the functional act of illumination. The transparent acrylic dining chairs represent a strategic formal choice, maintaining seating capacity and functional definition around the table while preserving visual porosity that prevents the middle ground from becoming compositionally congested or optically blocked, allowing the eye to travel freely toward the luminous window terminus. The inclusion of the piano at right functions beyond its practical musical purpose, serving as visual anchor, cultural signifier, and spatial counterweight that balances the leftward extension into the kitchen zone, its substantial horizontal mass and dark wood tonality providing necessary compositional grounding. The space appears to explore themes of domestic refinement and cultivated living, suggesting an environment designed to support both communal gathering and solitary contemplation, where aesthetic consideration and functional accommodation achieve equilibrium. One might observe how the design negotiates the tension between openness and intimacy, creating an expansive volume that nevertheless maintains human scale through careful proportion, warm materiality, and layered spatial definition, inviting consideration of how contemporary residential architecture can honor both the social dimensions of home and the individual's need for aesthetic and sensory nourishment within the everyday domestic realm.

Unique Properties
This design deconstructs a 5 story layout to create vertical transitions and horizontal continuity. By utilizing mirrors, lighting, and landscape stone, fragmented areas are composed into a ritualized entry sequence. The public zone employs a dual wall strategy with a screen and television to refine functionality, while folding doors soften boundaries to extend interaction onto the terrace. Sunken seating and a lounge bar create a seamless indoor outdoor experience.

Production Technology
The design team establishes an earth toned palette as the visual axis, using material narration to articulate spatial rhythm. On the first floor, mirrored surfaces in the entry foyer counterbalance the compressive effect of the existing black tiles in the garage, while imported lighting enhances the artistic layering of the space. The stairwell employs splashed ink landscape stone with deep texture to guide vertical circulation.
Design Challenge
In terms of lighting, scene based presets are configured for different situations, allowing required lighting conditions to be activated with a single touch. Automated settings are also introduced for heat insulating curtains, enabling the smart system to respond to outdoor daylight conditions and allowing occupants to enjoy a comfortable indoor environment with ease.
Project Duration
The project finished in 2025 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The residence features a vertical functional hierarchy. The first two floors merge indoor and outdoor spaces for social interaction through a flexible dual media living room and an integrated kitchen dining layout. The third and fourth floors house private suites including a palette defined master bedroom, personalized children rooms, and an accessible senior suite by the elevator. The top floor serves as a versatile fitness and social hub.
Research
In response to the sensory and physiological needs of a three-generation household, the design emphasizes an inclusive residential experience across all age groups. Clear circulation paths are planned throughout the home to ensure that elderly family members can enjoy equal and safe living conditions within an accommodating environment, while children are provided with spaces that support both exploration and privacy as they grow.
Inspiration
The design begins with reshaping the fundamental dialogue between the residents and the space. Moving away from the framework of a show house, the everyday habits of a three generation family are translated into spatial language, creating a soulful home that responds closely to the needs of each family member.
