About Unpolished Light Residence
Unpolished Light is the interior design of a 109-square-meter apartment for a family of four. The kitchen partition was removed, the entryway shortened and the master bedroom recessed to enlarge the social area. Cabinets on both sides of the entryway replace the lost storage. A corridor set at 45 degrees serves the two daughters' rooms and reduces wasted space. Sloped ceilings and a long ceiling outlet that conceals the air conditioning answer the low beam height. Marble, large-format tiles and engineered hardwood flooring are combined with light and dark neutral tones.
CHIA-CHI YEH's Unpolished Light Residence exemplifies contemporary residential design's ongoing exploration of material restraint and spatial fluidity as defining principles for cultivated domestic environments, situating itself within broader movements toward minimalist aesthetic vocabularies that emerged from mid-twentieth-century modernist traditions while incorporating the warmed materiality and textural sensitivity characteristic of twenty-first-century Scandinavian and Japanese-influenced design practices. The compositional achievement rests significantly in the sophisticated management of asymmetrical balance, where the substantial visual mass of the charcoal cabinetry system along the left perimeter finds equilibrium through the horizontal extension of warm timber flooring that draws the eye rightward toward the living zone, this spatial tension resolved through the diagonal thrust of the marble peninsula that activates the middle ground while the rose-gold pendant cluster establishes vertical counterpoint, demonstrating nuanced understanding of how weighted volumes and directional vectors collaborate to produce dynamic stability within open-plan configurations. The chromatic accomplishment deserves particular attention for its restrained yet warm neutrality, eschewing the stark austerity sometimes associated with minimalist vocabularies in favor of a palette that integrates honey-toned timber, milky calacatta-style stone with ochre veining, soft greys, matte blacks, and metallic copper accents, achieving visual interest through subtle tonal variation and material contrast rather than chromatic intensity, this approach suggesting influences ranging from Vincent Van Duysen's warm minimalism to Norm Architects' material-sensitive Nordic modernism. Technical facility manifests in the precise detailing evident throughout, from the seamless integration of cabinetry panels to the slender profiles of the glass partition framing system, the careful alignment of recessed lighting creating regular rhythmic intervals, and the thoughtful junction resolution where disparate materials meet, each detail contributing to an overall impression of crafted refinement rather than industrial coldness. The thematic significance centers on the creation of domestic space that supports both social congregation and private retreat, the open-plan configuration facilitating visual and physical connection between kitchen and living territories while the glass partition system allows functional separation without spatial isolation, suggesting contemporary understandings of residential life as requiring flexibility, transparency, and material quality as counterbalances to increasingly compressed urban dwelling footprints. The design engages longstanding modernist principles regarding spatial flow, material honesty, and functional clarity while updating these through contemporary material selections and the integration of warmer tonalities that soften what might otherwise read as austere, participating in ongoing conversations about how minimalist vocabularies can be rendered more inviting and domestically comfortable. The stone's veining patterns and timber's linear grain introduce organic irregularity within otherwise geometrically precise surroundings, suggesting nature's presence even within highly controlled environments, while the rose-gold metallic accents provide moments of visual warmth and reflective animation that prevent the space from reading as overly somber despite its neutral palette dominance. One might observe how the design invites contemplation regarding the relationship between material restraint and experiential richness, questioning whether reduced chromatic and formal complexity enhances rather than diminishes spatial quality, and consider how the careful orchestration of texture, tonality, lighting temperature, and proportional relationships collaborates to construct environments that feel simultaneously serene and sophisticated, spare yet welcoming.

- Unique Properties
- The designer focused on the social area, prioritizing the family's lifestyle. To create a spacious environment, the kitchen partition was removed, the entryway shortened, and the master bedroom recessed to expand the social area. To compensate for lost storage, cabinets were installed on both sides of the entryway for shoes and extra space. For the family's two daughters, the designer adjusted the layout to balance room sizes, using a 45-degree angled corridor to prevent wasted space and create smoother access, maximizing storage and space utilization.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This project involves renovating a 109-square-meter apartment, including three rooms, a living room, and a dining room. The layout features an entryway, living room, dining room, open study, open kitchen, master bedroom, and two daughters' rooms. Given the owner's preference for open spaces, the design team adjusted the layout by shortening the entryway, recessing the living room, and repositioning the kitchen. By removing partitions, they created an unobstructed visual flow in the social areas, enhancing the overall freshness and openness.

- Production Technology
- Materials: Eco-friendly emulsion paint, iron parts, transparent glass, marble, slab tiles, eco-friendly pp plate sheet, engineered hardwood flooring...etc. The materials used in each area match their functionality. For example, the marble on the TV wall brings out the luxurious texture and serves as the main visualization. The Italian tiles in the kitchen are easy to clean and non-slip. Engineered hardwood flooring allows the owner's daughters to step directly on the floor without compromising on comfort.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was addressing the oppressive feeling caused by the ceiling height limitations. With a beam height of less than 240 cm, installing a concealed air conditioning system was difficult. To solve this, the designer planned for a long air outlet in the ceiling, hiding the air conditioning within it to effectively use the space while meeting the height requirements. Additionally, the children's rooms faced similar height issues. The designer opted for sloped ceilings to visually extend the space and counteract the limitations of the site.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in October 2022 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The family is very pleased with the openness of the social area. The spacious, uninterrupted layout creates a seamless visual flow. The open study room, kitchen, and dining room provide everyone with their comfortable corner. The cozy atmosphere extends the time the family spends together in the social area, perfectly embodying the essence of 'home.'
- Research
- This apartment renovation was designed to create a warm, stylish, and safe space for a family of four, focusing on openness, storage, and aesthetics. The social area was revamped, with a spacious, open layout ideal for family interactions, while the private areas retained comfort. The sloped ceiling in the daughters' rooms addresses height limitations and adds whimsical charm. A warm color palette, featuring iron gray and deep gray with marble and large-format tiles, was used to create a serene, modern style, blending deep and light tones for a balanced, cozy ambiance.
- Inspiration
- The project serves a family of four: the owners and their two children. The design team focused initially on the spatial experience that was most important to the owners, adjusting the layout to ensure openness before gradually integrating storage solutions and aesthetic preferences. A key aspect is creating a social space where the family spends most of their time together. The designer incorporated natural light and used a range of light and dark tones to create a transparent and expansive environment within the limited space.
