About Twilight Elegance Residence

Twilight Elegance is a residential interior design for a family of four in Xinzhuang, Taiwan. The 148.76 square metre home is thirty years old and was renovated into three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room and one bathroom. A kitchen island anchors the plan and links four concealed doors to bedrooms and dressing areas, creating open circulation. Materials include stone, large porcelain slabs, dark wood veneer and artistic paint. Wood veneer wraps the beams and ceilings for visual continuity, and a consistent light temperature of 3000K keeps the mood calm.

Ti-Jan Chan's design engages contemporary residential interior traditions where spatial flow and material authenticity converge to create environments of quiet sophistication and functional grace, this approach reflects broader movements within residential design over recent decades toward open planning that dissolves rigid room boundaries while maintaining subtle territorial definition through architectural gestures, furniture arrangement, and material differentiation, the integration of living and dining zones within a unified yet articulated spatial volume demonstrates sophisticated understanding of contemporary domestic life patterns that value visual connectivity and social fluidity over formal compartmentalization, the compositional achievement here centers on the masterful deployment of the descending wood ceiling element which functions simultaneously as sculptural intervention, spatial organizer, circulation guide, and material counterpoint to the predominantly pale neutral envelope, this bold architectural gesture establishes vertical drama and gravitational presence that prevents the horizontal openness from dissolving into undifferentiated flow, anchoring the eye and providing orientational clarity, the chromatic sophistication emerges through disciplined restraint rather than coloristic exuberance, the warm neutral foundation ranging from champagne through mushroom to warm taupe creates enveloping comfort while the introduction of rich espresso wood tones and cool gray stone provides temperature oscillation and material variety that prevent monotony, the polished stone floor serves as crucial compositional element contributing not only chromatic complexity through its natural veining but also luminous amplification through reflection, effectively doubling the perceived light and creating subtle visual richness through mirrored elements, the lighting design demonstrates technical accomplishment in creating ambient warmth without harsh contrast or shadowed dead zones, multiple source integration produces even illumination that feels both generous and intimate, appropriate for diverse functional needs from contemplative reading to convivial dining, the furniture selection and arrangement reveal understanding of scale relationships and circulation logic, the substantial sectional sofa provides lounging comfort while its neutral tone prevents visual heaviness, positioned to engage both the striking wall art and maintain sight lines toward dining and kitchen zones, the geometric abstract photograph or print mounted prominently functions as focal artwork introducing graphic strength and intellectual dimension, its monochromatic architectural subject matter creating dialogue with the surrounding built environment, material selection throughout emphasizes authenticity and tactile appeal, natural wood grain remains visible rather than concealed, stone displays its geological formation honestly, leather upholstery suggests both luxury and durability, textiles introduce softness, this environment appears to explore themes of contemporary domestic tranquility, the cultivation of personal sanctuary within urban contexts, the integration of aesthetic refinement with practical livability, and the creation of spatial generosity within contained footprints, the work invites viewers to consider how architectural interventions at ceiling plane can dramatically organize space below, how neutral palettes achieve sophistication through material variety and subtle temperature shifts rather than chromatic intensity, how open planning can maintain functional clarity through strategic anchoring elements, and how residential environments might balance the competing desires for social openness and intimate enclosure, one might observe how evening illumination transforms material surfaces into warm glowing presences, how reflection in polished stone creates layered visual depth, how the descending wood element draws the eye upward to appreciate volumetric height before guiding it back to inhabitable zones, and how the composition as a whole suggests not merely a designed space but an invitation to dwell thoughtfully within carefully calibrated spatial and material relationships.

Unique Properties
The project renovates a 30-year-old, 148.76 m2 residence in Xinzhuang for a family of four. Preserving the spirit of the client's former home, the designer reimagined its Baroque-inspired drama into understated luxury. The new design fuses the grounded textures of twilight with the glowing warmth of sunset. Named Twilight Elegance, it symbolizes the intersection of styles and organic fluidity, reflecting how a home gently adapts to and embraces the daily lives of its residents.
Dimensions & Packaging
The 148.76 m2 home was reconfigured into three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and one bathroom. At its core, a kitchen island anchors the design, linking four concealed doors to bedrooms and dressing areas to create fluid circulation. The master suite features dual-aspect lighting and a private walk-in closet, while children's spaces revolve around the island, with open areas for free movement and even indoor cycling. The result is a transparent, cohesive layout that balances social and private zones.

Production Technology
The palette is defined by neutral, cool-leaning dark tones, harmonized through carefully planned lighting to regulate mood. Materials include stone, large porcelain slabs, dark wood veneer, and artistic paint. Marble-patterned floor tiles extend a hotel-like sense of luxury, while wood veneer wraps around beams and ceilings to establish visual continuity. A consistent 3000K light temperature stabilizes the overall mood, creating layered expressions of restraint and elegance.
Design Challenge
Upon demolition, the residence required a full overhaul of wiring, voltage, and pipelines. The designer continually adapted to on-site conditions, extending the timeline and raising technical demands. Large beams cutting through the space added complexity, requiring a balance between coherence and structure. They were resolved by wrapping in wood veneer and linking to cabinetry. Though no leakage or wall damage was found, the depth of work marked the project as a technically demanding medium- to large-scale renovation.
Project Duration
The project finished in April 2024 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
Since completion, the family of four frequently invites the designer to revisit, reflecting their satisfaction with the space. Children ride bikes and play freely indoors, even a small basketball hoop has been installed, demonstrating the generosity of space and efficiency of circulation. The island and foyer serve as the welcoming heart of the home, doubling as the family's most active social hub, whether for festive decorations or daily meals. Functionality is fully met, yet the design also maintains a distinct character, one that both parents and their children love.
