About Turandot Restaurant

Turandot is a restaurant interior that blends Chinese and Italian aesthetics. The space covers 850 square meters on two levels. Two halls are unified by a single design solution: brass pipes that conceal the electrical wiring. The Chinese Hall features traditional ornaments and dragon motifs. The Italian Hall presents a modern digital fresco based on the David by Michelangelo. Materials include marble, granite, gypsum, brass and agate. Almost all elements are handcrafted, and the lighting fixtures are custom made. The interior expresses a dialogue between two cultures.

Assel Kalyk's design for this dining establishment engages with a rich lineage of early-to-mid twentieth-century luxury interior aesthetics, particularly the geometric sophistication and material opulence associated with Art Deco and Streamline Moderne movements that flourished during the interwar period and found their most celebrated expressions in grand hotel dining rooms, ocean liner salons, cinema palaces, and exclusive urban restaurants where architectural ornament, precious materials, and integrated lighting converged to create environments of theatrical elegance and modern glamour. The spatial achievement evident here lies in the designer's skillful orchestration of vertical and horizontal architectural elements that create rhythmic visual intervals while maintaining functional clarity, the travertine-wrapped columns establishing structural cadence interrupted and enlivened by the unexpected organic intrusion of turquoise mineral formations that introduce biomorphic naturalism into an otherwise geometrically ordered composition, suggesting perhaps the juxtaposition of human architectural ambition with geological processes and raw earthly beauty. The chromatic accomplishment demonstrates considerable sophistication in balancing warm metallic gold tones that evoke traditional luxury and celebratory opulence with cool slate blues and grays that provide visual respite and contemporary refinement, while the strategic deployment of vibrant turquoise accents creates focal punctuation and memorable visual identity, this complementary harmony achieving both thermal balance and chromatic vitality across the environmental palette. The integration of multiple lighting systems reveals technical facility and atmospheric sensitivity, concealed linear LED fixtures within brass banding providing architectural definition and ambient warmth, sculptural pendant luminaires offering task illumination and visual interest, and the interplay of direct and reflected light producing complex surface modeling that enhances material richness and spatial depth, the overall luminous environment calibrated to create intimacy and visual drama appropriate to fine dining experiences. The furniture selections and their arrangement demonstrate understanding of hospitality design requirements, the channel-tufted ivory banquettes providing comfortable semi-private seating with strong linear texture that catches and holds light beautifully, paired with circular tables that facilitate conversation and social engagement, while the freestanding slate blue chairs with their exposed brass frames introduce a lighter visual presence and geometric elegance suitable for more flexible dining configurations, this variety of seating types allowing the space to accommodate different party sizes and dining preferences. The monumental backlit figural panel anchoring the axial view suggests engagement with classical decorative traditions where significant artworks or murals provided focal grandeur and narrative richness within public dining spaces, here executed in contemporary low-relief technique with brass framing that integrates the artwork into the overall architectural language, inviting diners to contemplate both the aesthetic achievement and the mysterious identity of the portrayed figure. One observes throughout a commitment to material authenticity and surface richness, genuine stone veneers rather than simulations, substantial metalwork rather than thin appliqués, quality upholstery fabrics and leathers, and carefully detailed junctions between materials, this integrity of execution elevating the design beyond mere stylistic gesture toward a more enduring quality of craftsmanship and sensory pleasure. The design invites consideration of how contemporary hospitality environments might honor historical precedents of luxury and theatrical elegance while incorporating current expectations for visual impact, material innovation, technological integration, and memorable experiential narratives that distinguish one dining destination from another in an increasingly competitive landscape, suggesting that thoughtful engagement with design history combined with bold contemporary gestures can produce spaces that feel both familiar and surprising, rooted and innovative, elegant and energetic.
