About The Smell of Book Sales Office
The Smell of Book is a sales office interior located in Chengdu, China. The design uses the form and lines of the traditional Chinese book scroll as an art installation. The scroll shape also acts as the main circulation line, guiding visitors from the sales office on the second floor down to the model room on the first floor. Materials include mirror stainless steel, metal, acrylic, white stone, curved mirror and terrazzo. Large French windows reduce visual barriers and link the interior with the outdoor scenery.
Within the evolving landscape of contemporary commercial interior design, Zhang Yun's The Smell of Book Sales Office emerges as an exemplary meditation on the intersection of literary culture, spatial poetry, and experiential architecture, representing a sophisticated approach to transforming transactional environments into contemplative cultural destinations. The installation's central sculptural element, a magnificent suspended ribbon of perforated metal bearing the ghostly impressions of calligraphic text and delicate vegetal imagery, appears to reference the physical and metaphysical qualities of the printed page itself, suggesting the flutter of book pages caught in perpetual motion, frozen in an eternal moment of intellectual discovery. The designer demonstrates exceptional command of scale relationships, orchestrating a dialogue between the intimate human dimension of the dining furniture and the monumental sweep of the installation that transforms the double-height volume into a cathedral of learning. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precise engineering required to suspend such substantial sculptural mass while maintaining visual lightness, the laser-cut perforations creating a lace-like transparency that allows light to penetrate and project delicate shadow patterns onto adjacent surfaces. The chromatic strategy employs restraint as a virtue, limiting the palette to warm metallic oxidation tones against pure white architectural surfaces, with the honey-colored wood of the integrated bookshelves providing warmth and domestic familiarity. Thematic resonance extends beyond mere decoration toward embodied meaning, as the flowing sculptural form seems to visualize the transmission of knowledge across time and space, stories and ideas rendered as physical presence inhabiting the architectural void. The integration of functional elements including seating areas and library storage within the artistic installation suggests a philosophy of design that refuses the separation between utility and beauty, commerce and culture. One might contemplate how the experience of moving through this environment transforms the mundane act of visiting a sales office into an encounter with the transcendent power of written language and artistic vision.

- The sales office is on the second floor, while the model room is on the first room. The difficulty of the project lies in how to naturally lead customers from the second floor to the first floor to visit the model room. The design team has come up with many ways, and finally decided to use the idea of book scroll. Taking the book scroll as the space moving line, and a scenic spot, so that customers can follow the direction of the book scroll and naturally go downstairs
- Project Duration
- The project started in May 2020 in Chengdu China and finished in September 2020.
- Operation Flow
- Usually when people walk in the space, their vision tends to focus on the limited place, because there are too many visual obstacles in the space. In this project, the French windows are widely used for getting rid of too many indoor obstructions, and the style of interior design echoes with the outdoor scenery, so that people's vision in the space is very wide, there is no dead corner. People will have a more immersive and harmonious experience in the space.
- Research
- Before the start of the project, a lot of surveys about Chinese scrolls were done, including the appearance of the scrolls and the choice of scroll text, and the display form of the scrolls has also been studied , so that this element can penetrate the entire space. Finally the desired effect has been achieved.
- Inspiration
- This project is inspired by the 5000-year Chinese history .The ups and downs of the book scroll are just like the waves of the long river of history. It is magnificent and solemn, and shows an artistic conception.
