About The Larks Cafe Cafe Space

Cafe The Larks is a joyful space for a mindful community who value freedom, sincerity and a taste for life. The premises for this cafe, which serves delicious breakfasts all day with fragrant bread and croissants, are located in the modern Podil Plaza residential complex in Kyiv, Ukraine. The design style concept has several key standing points: pastel shades, graphic in the structural elements, rounded shapes for the furniture and usage of arches. The inspiration came from the name of the space: The Larks Cafe, a bird which symbolizes the hope, light, and joy.

Lizaveta Odintsova's interior design for The Larks Cafe Cafe Space demonstrates a sophisticated synthesis of contemporary spatial design principles rooted in Northern European minimalism while embracing the tactile warmth and material honesty associated with Mediterranean and Japanese design traditions, positioning this hospitality environment within broader dialogues concerning third-place design, biophilic wellness spaces, and the contemporary cafe as social infrastructure that extends beyond mere commercial transaction into realms of community gathering and contemplative refuge from urban intensity. The compositional achievement reveals itself through multiple formal registers, beginning with the bold linear gesture of the ceiling's five luminous channels that establish rhythmic structure and guide the eye through perspectival space while serving the practical function of providing even, flattering illumination conducive to extended occupation, this integration of aesthetic and functional imperatives exemplifies thoughtful spatial problem-solving where every element performs multiple roles simultaneously. The chromatic sophistication emerges through a restrained yet warm palette where honeyed ochre walls and ceiling create enveloping warmth without claustrophobia, the earth tone establishing psychological comfort and intimacy appropriate to a space designed for social lingering, while sage green accents distributed through furniture elements provide chromatic counterpoint and visual relief, these celadon tones reading as fresh, organic, and psychologically calming, their presence reinforced by living plants that introduce saturated natural green into the composition, the overall color strategy suggests careful attention to how hue influences duration of stay and emotional comfort. The material vocabulary demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to textural contrast and sensory richness, the rough concrete feature wall with its visible formwork patterns providing haptic interest and visual weight that grounds the space, this raw surface treatment paired with the warm backlit bird silhouette creates memorable iconographic focus while the adjacent arched portal with its stepped concentric reveals introduces classical architectural language filtered through contemporary minimalist reduction, the arch form carrying millennia of architectural meaning related to threshold, passage, and sacred or significant framing, here domesticated into intimate scale yet retaining its ceremonial resonance, the mirror within this portal further multiplying space and light while inviting self-regard and pause. The integration of natural elements throughout speaks to growing recognition of biophilic design's psychological benefits, the potted tropical plants and delicate dried floral arrangements not merely decorative gestures but strategic wellness interventions that connect occupants to organic cycles and natural forms even within built environments, the sculptural ceramic vessels with their stacked spherical geometries suggesting handcraft traditions and artisanal values that resist mass production's homogenization, these objects carrying connotations of care, uniqueness, and human touch that elevate the quotidian coffee-drinking ritual into something more considered and precious. The transparency afforded by extensive glazing dissolves interior-exterior boundaries, inviting ambient daylight deep into the space while creating visual connection to street life beyond, this permeability suggesting openness, accessibility, and urban engagement rather than exclusive refuge, the space positioning itself as simultaneously sanctuary and public forum, private enough for intimate conversation yet visibly connected to collective civic life, the window seating particularly embodying this threshold condition where occupants can observe street theater while remaining comfortably sheltered, the design thus facilitating what sociologist Ray Oldenburg identified as essential functions of third places, those neither-home-nor-work environments crucial to community cohesion and individual wellbeing, spaces that welcome extended occupation without purchase pressure, that facilitate chance encounter and regular ritual equally, that provide what urban theorist Jane Jacobs termed "eyes on the street" through their transparent engagement with public realm. One might contemplate how such thoughtfully designed hospitality environments serve not merely commercial ends but broader social goods, creating infrastructure for human connection increasingly scarce in automobile-oriented development patterns, how the investment in material quality, spatial generosity, and aesthetic refinement signals respect for patrons and belief in design's capacity to elevate daily experience, and how the specific formal choices, the warm minimalism, the organic accents, the natural materials, collectively construct an aesthetic vocabulary that communicates values of sustainability, wellness, craft tradition, and humanistic scale against the anomie of generic corporate chain environments, inviting consideration of what constitutes meaningful place-making in contemporary urban contexts and how interior design operates as cultural practice expressing and shaping collective values about community, hospitality, beauty, and the quality of everyday life.

Design Interview about The Larks Cafe Cafe Space

The key idea was to create a space for free and open people, with quality food, delicious pastries, and desserts. The name and brand beech inspired us; the bird-man was invented based on the works of the famous Ukrainian writer and philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda.

The key was to fit 3 different types of seating, technology, a coffee bar, storage areas, and a bathroom into 50m2. This was very challenging. We redesigned the layout more than 20 times, and it took us almost 2 months.

I would like this project to be seen by as many people as possible, in printed design media. I want the whole world to know how bright, tasty, and juicy modern interior design in Ukraine is.

It took us almost 5 months to develop the concept and full design project.

The main influence we got from the brand book. It was our first design departure. After that, we visited ISaloni 2023 and it also gave so much inspiration.

Modern people with a free spirit and vision.

It`s a bold mixture: combining caramel ceiling, bouclé textiles, milk praline in the trim, pistachio details, with rough concrete, metal, and glass. All together is just working perfectly.

A huge team of real professionals worked on this project. Starting with the design team of my bureau and the technologist. Finishing with decorative craftsmen and textile designers. We like to say: each spoon for the cafe was chosen with love among the best artisans.

I participate in international competitions all the time. This is the best cross-section of your professional activity.

You have to be open to new possibilities, even if at the beginning it seems like a challenge and a big problem. In the end, all changes lead to the best result.
