About The Growth Curve Deformable Clothing
The Growth Curve is a deformable garment designed to change shape and to offer several ways of wearing. Fishbone strips form the supporting frame and are sewn directly onto elastic fabric. The uneven force created by the crossing strips makes the fabric curl and form spiral and raised surfaces, giving the garment a light and breathable three-dimensional structure. The method allows complex forms to be made without splicing separate panels. Less fabric waste is produced during production, which supports energy saving in the clothing industry.
Positioned at the intersection of fashion design and sculptural art practice, The Growth Curve Deformable Clothing by Haiwei Wang represents a significant achievement in contemporary textile innovation that challenges conventional understandings of garment construction and wearable form. The work emerges from traditions of conceptual fashion that treat clothing as a medium for artistic expression and philosophical inquiry rather than mere functional covering, recalling the experimental approaches of designers who have similarly explored architecture, mathematics, and natural phenomena as generative frameworks for sartorial creation. Wang's technical accomplishment manifests in the masterful integration of fitted bodice construction with explosively dimensional lower elements that appear to bloom outward from the human form like organic growth captured at its moment of maximum expression. The topographic linear patterning that traverses the entire surface creates visual cohesion while simultaneously suggesting the parametric design methodologies and computational approaches that characterize advanced contemporary fashion practice. The chromatic sophistication of the graduated pink-to-lavender palette demonstrates refined understanding of how color temperature shifts create depth and movement across complex three-dimensional surfaces. Thematically, the work invites contemplation of growth, transformation, and the boundary between body and environment—the garment functioning as an extension of corporeal presence into space rather than simple enclosure. The title's reference to growth curves suggests engagement with biological development patterns and mathematical modeling of organic processes, positioning the work within broader interdisciplinary conversations between science, technology, and creative practice. Viewers might consider how the garment transforms the relationship between wearer and space, and what possibilities emerge when clothing becomes architecture for the body.

- Unique Properties
- According to the principle of mechanics, this work makes the garment structure show 3D structure like "soft sculpture", light and breathable. At the same time, the clothing structure has the function of expansion and deformation, which can provide a variety of wearing methods for the wearer. The waste fabric produced in the process of clothing production is less, which is conducive to promoting the environmental protection and energy saving of the clothing industry.

- Production Technology
- The main production materials of this fashion design are fishbone and elastic fabric. Among them, fishbone function is the basic framework to shape the overall shape. Elastic fabric is used to wrap the surface and cooperate with the generation of organic form. In terms of the manufacturing principle, the fishbone material is directly sewed on the surface of the fabric, and the concave convex structure produced by the crisscross fishbone is used to drive the fluctuation of the elastic fabric. According to the principle of mechanics, the linear trend combination of supporting materials is designed in advance to make the elastic fabric bear uneven force under the action of fishbone supporting materials, and finally the fabric presents a three-dimensional shape of curl, concave convex and spiral.
- Design Challenge
- The most challenging part of the creation process of this series lies in the process of transforming the two-dimensional plane pattern into the three-dimensional space structure of clothing. There are uncontrollable factors in this process. In the whole production process, sometimes random and accidental changes of pattern arrangement will bring unexpected structure, and also bring more possibilities to clothing modeling.
- Project Duration
- The project started in October 2018 in Guangzhou and finished in April 2019 in Guangzhou, and was exhibited in Beijing in May 2019.
- Operation Flow
- The fashion design works use a variety of innovative structures, thus creating a variety of clothing modeling. The combination of fishbone and elastic fabric makes the garment not only the "armor" to protect the body, but also the second layer of soft skin. The garment manufacturing method can achieve a rapid prototyping for any shape and structure, including complex surface, without splicing to achieve the integration of clothing, and fundamentally achieve the three-dimensional shape of clothing.
- Research
- This design aims to carry out innovative research and Practice on clothing structure and materials, and further explore the free presentation of organic form in clothing conceptual design. At the same time, we try to create the "one clothing, many clothes" mode by using the deformable structure, so as to innovate the clothing function and reduce the waste of clothing materials. The positive role of green design concept in promoting green design in the clothing industry and its application prospect in the future wearable fashion field are further discussed.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration of the work comes from the 3D modeling structure with a sense of future technology, and the rhythmic changes are fascinating. Fishbone is used as the supporting frame of the garment, and elastic fabric is used to wrap the surface to shape the overall organic form. It is like ergonomic extension design, flexible and changeable modeling gives clothing more possibilities, and flowing shape brings people sensory stimulation.
