About Taniroku Saka Cookie Shop

Taniroku Saka offers an assortment of desserts to accompany tea time. The design concept of sea of clouds at the mountaintop, was developed by imagining the luxurious experience and brisk feel of having tea with sweets while overlooking a sea of clouds. The site of the shop is situated on a hill called Mt. Sanada because a samurai lord Sanada built a castle there. The hill is unfortunately too low to be called a mountain. Yet it is a hilltop, so the designers evolved the image and came up with the concept.

This meticulously conceived retail environment represents a sophisticated synthesis of spatial design, material restraint, and architectural sculpture that positions the work within contemporary minimalist commercial design while drawing upon traditions of Japanese spatial aesthetics and parametric computational form-making. The suspended ceiling installation establishes the project's defining gesture, transforming an overhead plane typically treated as neutral background into an active sculptural field where soft geometric volumes cascade in rhythmic sequence, their undulating arrangement suggesting organic phenomena such as cloud formations or wind-shaped snow while maintaining precise geometric discipline. This tension between organic suggestion and geometric rigor demonstrates considerable compositional intelligence, as the designer has achieved visual warmth and approachability within a vocabulary of austere reduction, avoiding the coldness sometimes associated with pure minimalism through the introduction of soft curves, gentle shadows, and volumetric depth. The chromatic strategy proves equally considered, establishing a near-total white environment that serves multiple functions simultaneously: it creates a neutral ground that allows the colored product packaging to achieve maximum visual impact, it suggests cleanliness and purity appropriate to food retail contexts, it establishes a gallery-like seriousness that elevates the perception of the goods offered, and it creates luminous spaciousness within what appears to be a relatively compact architectural envelope. The spatial organization demonstrates clarity and hierarchy, with the strong central axis inviting movement from entry toward the back counter area while the symmetrical flanking walls provide visual stability, and the foreground product display creates an immediate point of focus and customer engagement. The integration of functional requirements including display, circulation, service counter, and architectural expression appears seamless, suggesting careful coordination between programmatic needs and aesthetic ambition. One might observe how the project negotiates between commercial accessibility and refined aesthetic experience, creating an environment that welcomes customers while simultaneously communicating sophistication and design consciousness, elevating the perception of both the physical space and the products it contains. The work invites contemplation of how spatial design can transform everyday commercial transactions into memorable experiential encounters, and how restraint in material palette can paradoxically create richness through careful attention to light, shadow, proportion, and detail resolution.

Inspiration
The most distinctive feature is the sales stands that occupy the entire sales floor. Aisles for staff are minimized, prompting the staff to serve customers outside. This sales style was inspired by the greengrocer and the fish shop nearby. The designers noticed they always stay in their storefronts to serve customers, adding a lively vibe to the neighborhood. They thought such assertive marketing instead of waiting for them to come in could be more appropriate for this neighborhood.
