About Sun Yi Office Insurance Reception Center

Sun Yi Office is an insurance reception center placed on the first floor of a five-story independent house. The design is informed by the maritime history of the site and the origins of insurance. Gentle curves and wave-like features in the ceiling and floor create a calm atmosphere, while neutral tones of sand and driftwood dominate the palette. Modular curved desks form a shared work surface that supports collaboration and clear movement paths. Glass bricks at the entrance filter daylight, so brightness is increased while low transparency preserves privacy.

Chen Hsuan Wei's Sun Yi Office Insurance Reception Center represents a significant achievement in contemporary commercial interior design, exemplifying how thoughtful spatial orchestration and refined material selection can elevate functional program into memorable experiential architecture that serves both practical operational needs and aspirational brand communication. The design engages contemporary minimalist traditions while incorporating warmth through carefully calibrated material and chromatic choices, suggesting affinities with Scandinavian spatial sensibility where restraint and precision create environments of calm clarity rather than austere coldness, the composition demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial hierarchy and visual flow, establishing clear zones for reception, circulation, and workspace while maintaining perceptual unity through material vocabulary repetition and tonal harmony that guide occupants intuitively through the environment. The technical execution reveals considerable accomplishment in detailing precision, particularly evident in the integration of the dramatic black ceiling grid structure which serves multiple functions simultaneously as visual anchor, spatial definer, and likely concealment for building systems while contributing powerful graphic impact, the translucent wall panels flanking the central portal represent notable material innovation, their dimensional textured surface creating constantly shifting shadow patterns as light conditions change throughout the day, transforming static architecture into dynamic atmospheric experience, the backlighting strategy employed here demonstrates refined understanding of how indirect illumination can dematerialize solid surfaces while creating ambient glow that enhances perceived spaciousness and promotes psychological comfort. The metallic sliding doors at the composition's center command attention through their reflective surfaces and substantial proportions, serving as threshold and transition point while their brushed finish prevents excessive glare, demonstrating technical consideration for visual comfort within functional necessity, the integration of organic elements through both botanical specimens and curved upholstered forms provides essential counterpoint to the rectilinear architectural language, preventing potential sterility while maintaining overall compositional discipline, these softer elements invite pause and human occupation, signaling welcome and accessibility within the otherwise crisp geometric framework. The chromatic strategy balances cool architectural surfaces with warm furnishing accents, creating thermal equilibrium that reads as professional yet approachable, sophisticated yet comfortable, the restricted palette demonstrates confidence in allowing material quality and spatial proportion to generate visual interest rather than relying on chromatic variety, this restraint amplifies the impact of each material choice and surface treatment, allowing texture, reflection, and shadow to provide subtle variation within tonal consistency. The spatial planning reflects deep understanding of corporate reception environments where first impressions establish institutional character and operational efficiency must be balanced with experiential generosity, the design allocates sufficient space for comfortable seating while maintaining clear circulation paths, the central axis draws visitors forward while lateral zones provide pause points, the workspace visibility in the background suggests organizational transparency and accessibility, metaphorically reinforcing trust and openness appropriate to the insurance services context. This environment invites consideration of how commercial spaces shape daily experience for occupants and visitors, how material choices communicate institutional values, and how spatial design can honor functional requirements while creating moments of aesthetic contemplation within utilitarian contexts, the careful balance achieved here between operational efficiency and experiential richness suggests possibilities for corporate environments that enhance rather than merely house professional activity, offering inspiration for how design excellence can transform necessary program into meaningful place.

Design Challenge
This concept centers around the symbiotic relationship between ocean life and the environment. Drawing inspiration from coral reefs and underwater ecosystems, the office design features clusters of organic shapes and vibrant colors. One of the main challenges was transitioning from traditional individual workstations to a shared long table workspace. This shift required meticulous planning to ensure that the shared desk not only enhances collaboration but also aligns with the aesthetic and functional needs of the office. The desk follows the natural flow of the space, with careful planning of movement paths to prevent crowding and maintain a balanced, efficient layout. Glass bricks are placed strategically to allow light to permeate through while providing privacy, enhancing the airy feel of the space. The design promotes both a collaborative atmosphere and respect for the environment.
Project Duration
This office design project was launched in August 2023 and completed in March 2024.
Operation Flow
Drawing inspiration from the rhythmic ebb and flow of ocean tides, this design incorporates gentle curves and fluid shapes to symbolize the perpetual cycle of the sea. The wave-like features integrated into the ceiling and floor contribute to a tranquil atmosphere, while a color palette dominated by neutral tones of sand and driftwood enhances the overall aesthetic. To improve workspace efficiency, modular curved desks are designed to emulate the movement of waves, thereby promoting an organic workflow. Additionally, glass bricks at the entrance serve to filter natural light, increasing brightness while preserving privacy through low transparency. This dual-layered effect ensures that the space remains open and luminous without sacrificing privacy, thereby achieving a harmonious balance between functionality and tranquility that fosters focus and collaboration.
Research
Inspired by the ebb and flow of tides, this design introduces gentle curves and fluid shapes to reflect the continuous cycle of the sea. Wave-like features in the ceiling and floor create a serene atmosphere, while neutral tones of sand and driftwood dominate the palette. To boost workspace efficiency, modular curved desks mimic wave movement, fostering an organic workflow. Glass bricks at the entrance filter natural light, enhancing brightness while maintaining privacy with low transparency. This dual-layered effect ensures the space feels open and bright without compromising privacy, balancing function and tranquility to encourage focus and collaboration.
