About Study Reading Environment
Study is an interior design for a six floor reading space in Taiwan, covering 496 square feet. The project applies the idea of home to every level, so each floor offers a different feeling. The first floor holds the main reading area, where a stepped platform suits children. A tall book wall emphasizes the high ceiling. The mezzanine combines reading, meeting and dining functions. The second floor is a study with a book wall, a glass display case and a fireplace. Transparent glass connects the levels, while soft gray blue tones and light wood veneer create a calm atmosphere.
CHEN SHIH HAN's Study Reading Environment exemplifies the thoughtful synthesis of pedagogical purpose and spatial poetry that distinguishes exceptional contemporary library design, positioning itself within a lineage of reading spaces that honor the profound human relationship with books while embracing the sensory and social dimensions of learning environments. The work emerges from traditions of Nordic library architecture, particularly the warm wood-lined interiors that characterized progressive Scandinavian public buildings from the mid-twentieth century onward, yet translates these influences through a distinctly contemporary lens that emphasizes biophilic principles and child-centered accessibility. The designer demonstrates remarkable compositional sophistication in orchestrating multiple scales of experience within a unified spatial envelope, from the intimate interaction between an adult and child selecting books at the shelving wall to the grand atmospheric gesture of the double-height volume animated by floating spherical luminaires. The timber paneling system deserves particular recognition for its ability to create visual warmth and acoustic absorption while establishing a rhythmic vertical emphasis that draws the eye upward and celebrates the generous ceiling height, the subtle curves introduced to these surfaces adding organic softness that mitigates potential institutional austerity. Chromatic restraint serves the design admirably, allowing the accumulated colors of book spines to emerge as the primary chromatic event while the pale wood palette creates a neutral backdrop conducive to focused reading and contemplation. The integration of natural light through extensive glazing connects interior intellectual activity with exterior natural environment, suggesting that learning exists within broader ecological and temporal contexts. The tiered circular book display element demonstrates intelligent furniture design that accommodates children's proportions while creating visual interest through its sculptural presence, the stepped platforms echoing natural forms of growth and accumulation. One might consider how this environment invites its users to understand reading not as solitary withdrawal but as communal practice embedded within thoughtfully crafted architectural embrace, where spatial generosity and material warmth together cultivate conditions for sustained intellectual engagement and intergenerational knowledge transmission.

- Unique Properties
- Because it is a multi-storey business space, I hope that each floor will be injected with different spatial expressions so that consumers can have different feelings when using it. The design is centered on the concept of "home", so that people on different floors can feel the warmth brought by home. Warmth. Different floors also combine different business methods.

- Production Technology
- The project is as simple as possible, and expresses a variety of design vocabulary through the repeated application of the same material, which is similar to the role played by gray and blue in this case, whether as the main color or as an accent color, the appearance of gray and blue creates a connection, and then leads to the vertical floor relationship.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge of this case is how to depict the different spatial representations of each floor, and at the same time tie up the coherence of the vertical floors, so as to give a complete and harmonious situational experience.
- Project Duration
- The project started in June 2023 in Taiwan and finished in December 2023 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The main business space is mainly on the first floor and the mezzanine, and transparent glass is used to give people in different spaces the opportunity to connect and interact.
- Research
- In the face of different space requirements, this time it is not only necessary to take into account the flow of people, the relationship between reading and dining areas, but also across the setting of offices and private residences, and check the functions of each aspect, she said, the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere is the main axis of the relationship between floors, so paying attention to light, ventilation, and leaving white space at the right time has become the key to this case.
- Inspiration
- Use curved extensions to create cabinets and raised floors with different functions. Soft gray blue and light wood veneer lead into an ocean-like reading space.
