About Studio with Mirror Bridge Studio

Studio with Mirror Bridge is an office interior created for a design studio in a ground-floor flat in a 1990s residential neighborhood. The original layout was linear and dark, with one small patio. A twisted vortex of mirror polished stainless steel connects the north and south sides and improves lighting, ventilation and scale. The reflective surface spreads daylight through the interior. The vortex narrows in the lounge area and ends as a curved bar. The form also blocks direct views from the entrance to the work area.

Within the evolving discourse of contemporary interior architecture, Liu Jinrui's Studio with Mirror Bridge Studio emerges as a remarkable meditation on the transformative potential of reflective materiality within workplace environments, demonstrating how a single bold architectural gesture can fundamentally alter spatial perception and experiential quality. The installation appears to engage with traditions of immersive environmental art while serving pragmatic functional requirements, suggesting the designer's sophisticated understanding of how creative professionals might draw inspiration from their physical surroundings. The technical achievement evident in the seamless execution of the curved mirrored surface speaks to advanced fabrication methodologies, with each undulation precisely calculated to create specific reflective effects that multiply spatial perception beyond the room's actual boundaries. The chromatic restraint exercised throughout, limiting the palette to silvers, whites, and strategic green botanical accents, allows the reflective installation to function as the undisputed visual protagonist while maintaining an atmosphere conducive to focused creative work. The biophilic elements introduced through trailing plants and potted specimens serve dual purposes, softening the potentially clinical precision of the mirrored surfaces while providing organic visual relief that appears endlessly replicated within the reflection. One might observe how the design negotiates the tension between spectacle and functionality, creating an environment that stimulates imagination without overwhelming practical workspace requirements. The spatial organization suggests thoughtful consideration of circulation patterns and visual axes, with the installation reading differently from multiple vantage points throughout the day as natural light conditions shift. The work invites contemplation of boundaries between interior and exterior, finite and infinite, solid and void, perhaps asking viewers to consider how the environments we inhabit shape the creative thoughts we produce within them.

Unique Properties
The twisted mirror polished stainless steel vortex connects the north and south, solving the lighting, ventilation and scale problems in one single step. The vortex gradually shrinks in the lounge area and form the fishtail bar in the end, which not only realizes the function but also avoids direct sight from the entrance to the workplace.

Production Technology
The twisted mirror bridege is made by polished stainless steel. A series of structure studies optimized the construction logic of the stainless steel itself. The form of the ground-supported portion and the tension of its shape partially reduced the difficulty of construction.
Design Challenge
We use the tension of its shape to reduce the difficluty of fuction bu a serials of parametrization.

Design: 2018.04
Construction: 2018.04-2018.05
Operation Flow
The surrounding scenery is incorporated into the magic belt and flows into the interior along its surface.
Research
A ground-floor flat in 90s residential neighborhood was transformed to a modern and contemporary office. Different from the traditional obstructive scenery, the material and curvature of the silvery vortex make it reflect the extraordinary dimensionality of the surrounding space, both modern and magic. The installation appears as a strategic arrangement to activate the entire indoor space. In this case, it is natural to connect the meeting room with kitchen and courtyard. If we compare the mirror polished stainless steel bridge to a magic belt, then the circular storage space may be the logic belt that integrate many practical functions.
Inspiration
The original flat had a linear layout with one dark little patio. Poor lighting and cramped space made it difficult to work as a design studio. Mirror bridge brings both lightness and vitality into the once dark and narrow flat, invoking a feeling of dream and fantasy. The twisted metal surface allows the light to be reflected multiple times indoors, increasing the illumination as well as creating a magic time-tunnel experience. The renovation made significant improvements in lighting, ventilation, and sight.
