About Spring Dance Multifunctional Necklace

This necklace draws inspiration from ballet and ribbon dance, embodying the colors of the spring and a ballerina's journey of love and hope. Delicate motifs and figures reflect the graceful dance of ribbons. This multifunctional necklace transforms into six shapes, including a tiara, two pendants, two forms of necklaces, and a ring. It features a spinning ballerina and a flower that blooms mechanically. Created using enameling, it offers cost effective style for various occasions, making it a unique and eco friendly jewelry piece.

Positioned within the distinguished lineage of nature-inspired haute joaillerie, Mehragin Rahmati's Spring Dance Multifunctional Necklace represents a remarkable synthesis of technical virtuosity and poetic imagination that transforms precious materials into a wearable meditation on seasonal renewal and natural grace. The work engages meaningfully with the Art Nouveau tradition of translating organic forms into decorative arts while introducing contemporary sensibilities through its multifunctional design concept and refined material palette. The compositional achievement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how jewelry must function both as autonomous sculptural object and as adornment integrated with the human form, with the sweeping ribbon elements following the natural curves of the collarbone while creating visual drama through their dynamic spiraling movement. The chromatic program operates with notable restraint and sophistication, limiting the palette to harmonious progressions of lavender, rose, and champagne tones that suggest the delicate coloration of spring blossoms while maintaining visual unity across diverse materials including pearls, carved stone flowers, faceted gems, and polished metalwork. The technical facility evident in the pavé setting of the hummingbird figure demonstrates masterful command of traditional jewelry techniques, while the innovative ribbon construction suggests contemporary approaches to metalworking that achieve remarkable lightness and movement. The iconographic content invites rich associations with renewal, transformation, and the eternal cycle of nature's awakening, with the hummingbird serving as a traditional symbol of joy, resilience, and the ability to find sweetness in life. The multifunctional aspect of the design, suggested by its title, speaks to contemporary concerns with versatility and sustainability in luxury goods, offering the wearer multiple possibilities for engagement with the piece. One might contemplate how this work celebrates the fleeting beauty of spring while simultaneously asserting the permanence of artistic vision rendered in precious materials.

Design Interview about Spring Dance Multifunctional Necklace

To design this multifunctional necklace, I was inspired by love, spring, and dance. The main idea was to evoke the essence of these three concepts. This necklace was born from a story I wrote about a ballerina—a story that became a short video and, eventually, this jewelry piece. Hidden within the design is a psychological idea: art has the power to elevate the human spirit and make the world more beautiful. In my story, the art of dancing helps the ballerina begin anew, embrace a fresh spring, reignite the warmth of love, and heal her broken heart. Every color in this design symbolizes spring, the re-blooming of hope, and desire. The flowers are crafted in vibrant hues to capture spring’s freshness and vitality.

I focused on several key aspects while designing this necklace. Aesthetics were paramount, but I also wanted to ensure practical usability. This wasn’t meant to be a complex piece—I aimed to create visually unique jewelry that remains comfortable to wear. Additionally, I prioritized multifunctionality, allowing it to transform into various jewelries, reflecting the eco-friendly perspectives.
Through this design, I wanted to embody three themes: spring, love, and ballet. The mechanical movement was especially important—when the ballerina spins, the flower blooms, symbolizing how hope blossoms through dance, and how spring awakens when art comes to life.

I might consider it as a collection and design other jewelry pieces for it.

From the initial idea to final manufacture, the process took more than two months. The multifunctional mechanics, and intricate design and enameling of the vast surface made it particularly complex.

This was not a commissioned piece—it began as a beautiful idea and a meaningful concept. I was deeply inspired by spring and love, and I wanted to create a distinctive piece of jewelry that delights through beauty while carrying spiritual depth.

This design is entirely my own, and I produce it myself. I have no plans to sell or lease the production rights to any other party.

The story and idea of this design came to me long ago. I wanted to create jewelry that was both beautiful and functional, with a psychological concept woven in. I dreamed of a design that would symbolize love and hope—so distinctive it would boost confidence, while telling a profound story.

My ideal customer is someone who values not just the material worth of jewelry, but its spiritual and artistic significance. They appreciate the story and craftsmanship behind an artistic piece and understand how to wear it meaningfully. This is a person who distinguishes between mass-produced jewelry and wearable art, choosing pieces for joy and uniqueness, not just investment.

This design is truly unique. The enameling technique is entirely innovative , and its mechanical features are expertly designed—it can be worn in six different ways. Aesthetically, it carries an elegance and narrative depth that sets it apart, reflecting the beauty of the story behind its creation.

Spring Dance tells the story of a heartbroken ballerina who hung up her shoes after being abandoned by her beloved. But when she decides to dance again, the memory of her beloved can no longer chain her to despair—art’s spirit lifted her into a new spring of love. Blossoms of hope flowered in her heart again as she discovered the spiritual love hidden in dance, surviving and thriving. She dances on, merging with spring’s cheerfulness, novelty, and freshness. For her, a new life begins—bursting with desire and aspiration, just like spring itself.

I created my sketch with two methods: first using the classic method, by hand with colored pencils and gouache. I also created the design using Procreate software.

Beyond its striking form, the magic lies in its multifunctionality. It transforms into six distinct jewelry pieces: a tiara, two pendants, two necklace , and a ring. The necklace dismantles and reassembles into these new shapes effortlessly. The enameling was extraordinarily complex due to the curves and the vast surface, and the delicate colors and versatility make it perfect for any occasion.

Various research were done to craft this necklace. Several initial samples were created to achieve the suitable curve for the desired final shape of the ribbon. It had to be flexible enough to easily transform into a tiara. The intricate connections and fastenings were adjusted numerous times to create a convenient and transformable piece. I knew the A' Design Award was one of the world`s largest and prestigious competitions, and I wanted my design to be seen on the global stage.

This necklace taught me resilience. I faced many mechanical challenges to achieve a smooth, precise structure that could transform into six different pieces. The enameling alone was a masterclass in precision. But every obstacle gifted me invaluable experiences, and for that, I’m deeply grateful.

Although the project was difficult, succeeding made it all worth it. New projects bring unexpected challenges. I learned that we might want to give up, but we must hold onto faith and hope. While creating Spring Dance, I felt this too. But I believed in myself, and in the end, that faith birthed a singular work of art.
Finally, I would like to thank the A' Design Award and the jury for awarding me the Platinum and Silver Prizes. I am deeply grateful and hope to contribute more. Being selected as a winner for two of my designs is profoundly meaningful to me.

Grand Interview about Spring Dance Multifunctional Necklace

I tried to design this necklace to serve as a multifunctional and cost-effective piece of jewelry. The purpose was to make it useful for different occasions, both in casual and formal ways. I faced many mechanical challenges to achieve a smooth, precise structure that could transform into six different pieces. Locks had to be matched to several parts, with dimensional sensitivity of less than a micrometer, and the final piece had to be comfortable and easy to wear. For the mechanically blooming flower with the curves on the backside, a number of silver samples were crafted to reach the favorable mechanism. Enameling of the various parts was repeated up to eighty times, because the surface of the work was large and all the curvy edges made it even more challenging. To get to a satisfying outcome, I had to repeat the process many times.

A symbol of my initial concept lies within each of the six pieces of this multifunctional jewelry; whether it's a flower in the ring, a ribbon in the necklace, or a ballerina in the pendant, you may find a touch of my story in every single piece it transforms into.

The enameling process had to be repeated many times due to its vast surface and curved form. I wanted to evoke the essence of spring and freshness, so the pink color seemed like the best choice, as I find it a sincere shade for evoking ballet dances and the spring season. The final pink shade was created by mixing pink and purple precisely, achieving Mother of Pearl tender pink shade that helped preserve the delicate expression of the ribbon.

To design a high-quality and luxurious jewelry piece that provokes a sense of motion, I tried to invent a dynamic mechanism while maintaining its delicate and glamorous appearance. I wanted the flower to bloom when the ballerina spins—a process that had to be done very precisely so that the function would not affect the aesthetics. To maintain the ballerina's spinning mechanism, the ribbon size needed precise calculation.

These locks had to be crafted many times to reach the desirable design. Although they had to be tiny and delicate, they also had to be functional and high-quality so they would not get loose while being used over and over again.

Being multifunctional makes Spring Dance an eco-friendly design. Although it is only one piece of jewelry, but it can be worn on different occasions. Some parts of it are handmade using natural gemstones. I addressed ecological concerns during the manufacturing process while preserving its elegant and glamorous look.

This necklace is designed based on a story I wrote myself; thus, I tried to convey the romantic essence of my story through it. I wanted to preserve the expression of my narration captured in the video made from my story under my supervision. The ballet dance with the ribbon, the spring blossoms, the ballerina spinning inside the ribbon—they all narrate my tale. My initial idea grew into a splendid piece of fine jewelry. I really wanted to retain the artistic features of my design while creating high jewelry.

One of the most challenging parts of the design was to resemble the tenderness of a ribbon using a material such as gold. I had to be very delicate to achieve that goal. The necklace was tested on a model several times to achieve the finalized smooth curves that felt natural on the skin and matched the body shape. The other ribbon, couldn’t be too big, but it had to be large enough for the ballerina to spin easily. That was a serious challenge, because the feeling of dance and the wrapping shape of the ribbon around the ballerina had to be maintained. To achieve the desirable final outcome, this necklace had to be crafted several times.

I have always been eager to combine classical and modern design characteristics. Even in my paintings or interior design projects I did as a hobby, I fuse these two, enjoying a synthesis of classical design’s originality with the convenience and excitement of modern style. I like to see these aspects as a unified whole. Spring Dance is a classical jewelry piece with contemporary mechanical features, using modern techniques to give a fresh interpretation to traditional design. Designers could benefit from adding a touch of contemporary flair to classical pieces to create a new signature style.

Being awarded this prize was an encouragement to me and left me with powerful inspiration to pursue my special ideas. I might have been hesitant about giving life to many of my imaginative designs, but now I feel I have the strength and self-confidence to develop a new series of rebellious and meaningful concepts. Jewelry should not be considered merely a material investment but as an artwork which can carry a meaningful message inside. Artistic jewelry can attract more attention than those created with no concept and only hold value as precious metal and gemstones. I am deeply interested in art, especially painting, so when my jewelry design is recognized as an art piece, it fills me with pure joy.
