About Silver Wings Lamp
Silver Wings is a desk lamp designed to protect the eyes of children. A curved light source 63 centimetres long illuminates a desk width of 1.6 metres, reducing differences in brightness across the surface. Two light wings can be folded downwards so that the light beams overlap, which reduces hand shadows during writing. A micro-surface diffusion panel spreads the light in several directions for even illumination. A knob and a screen control the brightness, the colour temperature and the timer functions.
Two square meters's Silver Wings Lamp emerges from the distinguished tradition of articulated task lighting that traces its lineage through the functionalist innovations of twentieth-century industrial design, yet advances this heritage through refined material expression and thoughtful formal innovation. The work demonstrates exceptional command of the articulated lamp typology, employing precision-machined aluminum armatures connected through ball-joint mechanisms that permit fluid repositioning while maintaining stable configuration. The designer appears to have drawn inspiration from avian morphology, with the dual light-emitting panels suggesting wings in graceful extension, a biomorphic reference that softens the otherwise technical industrial vocabulary and invites emotional connection. The base element presents particular interest through its organic asymmetrical contour, departing from conventional circular or rectangular footprints to suggest natural forms while maintaining functional stability. Material choices evidence sophisticated understanding of visual and tactile hierarchy: cool metallic aluminum components establish structural credibility and premium positioning, while warm white polymer diffusers and base elements provide accessible warmth that humanizes the technological object. The chromatic restraint operating within an achromatic palette demonstrates confidence in form and proportion, allowing sculptural qualities to command attention without chromatic distraction. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of electrical systems within the articulated structure, with no visible wiring disrupting the clean formal expression. The work invites consideration of how contemporary lighting design balances competing demands of adjustability and aesthetic coherence, functional performance and sculptural presence. - The Silver Wings desk lamp is an eye protection lamp designed for children. - Dimensions & Packaging
- The Silver Wings comes in desk lamps, clamp lamps, and floor lamps for children's various visual activities. The desk lamp has dimensions of Width 650 mm x Depth 500 mm x Height 450 mm, which gives it a wide illumination area. With a total weight of 7kg, it can be stably placed on the desktop without any concerns of tipping over.

- Production Technology
- The Silver Wings features two long and adjustable curved light sources with 108 LED beads. Its micro-surface diffusion panel ensures uniform and comfortable illumination, dispersing light in multiple directions to effectively light up the entire desk. The metal bearing inside the lamp cap allows the light source to rotate inward, creating a three-dimensional lighting effect and reducing hand shadows.
The materials used in the Silver Wings primarily include plastic, aluminum, zinc alloy, etc. Processes such as injection molding, anodizing, and spray coating are employed to emphasize the material contrast between various components. - Design Challenge
- The rotatable double arc light source is a new lighting structure we invented. It's indeed a significant challenge to integrate the rotating structure with the intricate circuitry of the lamp within the plastic shell of the lamp head.
We have innovatively designed a control method that combines rotation and screen touch, providing unique feedback for each operation. We also offer practical study aids such as timers and clocks to enhance children's learning efficiency. - Project Duration
- The project started in December 2021 in Hang Zhou and finished in January 2023 in Shen Zhen.
- Operation Flow
- The Silver Wings adopts a control method using a knob and screen buttons. By rotating the knob on the lamp head, you can easily adjust the brightness, color temperature, and timer functions. At the same time, the screen and LED lights provide users with intuitive feedback.
The Silver Wings has built-in motion and ambient light sensors. When a child sits down, it automatically turns on to prevent them from straining their eyes in dim environments. By pressing the auto-sensing button, the light adjusts its brightness according to changes in the surroundings, providing the most suitable illumination for children's eyes. - Research
- Based on interviews with over 100 households, it was found that children spend an average of over 2 hours studying at home, often facing inadequate lighting coverage, unacceptable brightness levels, or forgetting to turn on the lights. Moreover, children engage in various visual activities like writing, reading, crafting, drawing, and using iPad. Each activity requires different types of illumination, yet most households lack appropriate eye protection lamps.
- Inspiration
- In 2022, the myopia rate among children in China reached 53.6%. So we want a desk lamp for myopia prevention. Through user research, we discovered that children's study areas often lack proper lighting, and they rarely use desk lamps. Inspired by surgical lamps' shadowless light effect, our design features two flexible light wings. It resembles the golden snitch from Harry Potter, looks very cute and lively. We hope that children can use this lamp more frequently to protect their eyes.
