About Silence Mirror Residence
Silence Mirror is the interior design of a renovated apartment in Taiwan. The home measures 112.3 square meters and is located in a fifty-year-old building. Straight lines and simple blocks express the calm of Zen aesthetics. Mineral paint covers large wall areas and shows a mottled natural texture under light. Large tiles reduce visible lines, and travertine adds a delicate surface. Extra partitions were removed to widen circulation and enlarge the social area. Storage is concentrated in core zones to reduce cabinetry and keep the rooms orderly.
Shibui design atelier's Residence positions itself within contemporary design discourse that seeks to reconcile minimalist restraint with sensory warmth, advancing spatial strategies developed through decades of dialogue between Eastern and Western architectural philosophy while demonstrating particular sensitivity to material expression, proportional calibration, and atmospheric orchestration that characterizes the most accomplished residential interiors of recent years. The compositional achievement reveals sophisticated understanding of asymmetrical balance, the furnishing elements and architectural interventions distributed to create dynamic equilibrium rather than static symmetry, the low horizontal mass of the sectional sofa balanced against the vertical transparency of the glass partition system, the dark concentration of the dining furniture offset by the luminous dispersal of the shelving display, each zone maintaining distinct identity while contributing to holistic spatial narrative that unfolds through processional movement from entry threshold through living zone toward dining area and glimpsed storage beyond. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates restraint elevated to art form, the warm neutral palette avoiding monotony through subtle tonal variation and strategic material diversity, the taupe walls providing continuous field against which darker accents achieve emphasis without drama, the abstract painting introducing concentrated warmth that resonates with timber tones while maintaining distinction through its textured surface and atmospheric depth, the black elements providing linear definition and visual punctuation that sharpens otherwise soft transitions, the overall color strategy creating spaces that feel simultaneously restful and engaging, neutral without being bland, calm without being cold. Technical facility appears throughout in details that reward close observation: the precise reveal between ceiling plane and wall surface suggesting concealed lighting channels, the shadow gap beneath wall-mounted shelving creating visual levitation, the slim profile of the glass partition mullions maximizing transparency while maintaining structural integrity, the consistent alignment of horizontal elements from sofa back height through table surface to shelving datum establishing subliminal order, the careful selection of light sources to maintain warm color temperature consistency preventing the clinical quality that often compromises minimalist interiors, these refinements collectively demonstrating design intelligence that operates through accumulation of considered decisions rather than singular dramatic gestures. The work explores enduring themes of shelter and openness, privacy and connection, material presence and spatial void, engaging the fundamental question of how contemporary domestic environments might provide psychological refuge while maintaining visual and spatial generosity, how interiors can feel simultaneously enclosed and expansive, intimate and grand, the glass partitions functioning as spatial device that separates without severing, that defines zones while preserving visual continuity, allowing inhabitants to occupy distinct functional areas while remaining aware of broader environmental whole. The shelving system visible through transparent threshold suggests careful curation of objects and artifacts, the disciplined display neither sparse nor cluttered but achieving that elusive middle state where personal possessions become compositional elements contributing to aesthetic coherence, each vessel and volume placed with consideration for form, scale, and interval, the backlit presentation elevating everyday objects to contemplative still life, this treatment of domestic contents suggesting design philosophy that extends from architectural envelope through furnishing selection to the smallest decorative detail, understanding interior environment as total composition requiring attention at every scale. One observes how natural and artificial light sources collaborate to create temporal variation, the recessed ceiling fixtures providing consistent ambient foundation while the integrated shelf lighting and painting wash offer localized accent, the overall luminosity suggesting late afternoon or early evening when daylight fades and interior illumination assumes primary role, this transitional quality contributing to the space's atmospheric depth, inviting consideration of how the environment transforms through daily cycles, how morning light might emphasize different surfaces, how evening dimming might shift emphasis from background to foreground, the design revealing temporal dimension through its responsiveness to changing illumination conditions, becoming not static tableau but dynamic environment participating in natural rhythms.

- Unique Properties
- Straight lines and simple blocks with natural materials interpret the calmness and aesthetics of Zen, giving modern spaces a unique sense of tranquility and harmony. In terms of storage and circulation planning, the designers minimized the necessary walking distance, making each step natural and smooth. Storages are concentrated in core areas to minimize cabinetry. This maximizes storage functionality while allowing the occupants to be minimized from the inner self to the home.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The site is 112.3 square meters of 50-year-old apartment including a balcony, with 2 plus 1 rooms, a living room, a dining room, and 2 bathrooms. The original 3-room layout made the circulation narrow. Considering the space serves only two people, the designers removed the extra compartments and rearranged the layout to expand the social area and pet activity space. They removed walls in the kitchen and two rooms and replaced the study room door with a sliding glass door to increase flexibility. The toilet is also enlarged, and storage is added.

- Production Technology
- Materials: mineral paint, travertine, tiles, wood veneer, eco-friendly latex paint, etc. The project is characterized by straight lines and flat shapes. To add more layers between the blocks, the designers chose to cover large areas of the walls with paint. The mottled natural texture of the mineral paint creates a variety of layers when exposed to light. Large-size tiles minimize the lines in the space. Finally, the undecorated travertine gives the space a delicate texture under the simple material composition.
- Design Challenge
- The designers were faced with material, structural, and detailing challenges. All three require precise calculations and in-depth understanding. The first step was to upgrade the electrical plumbing system to address the limitations and pitfalls of the old building. Then, according to the design concept, the core of the project was to balance functionality and aesthetics through reduction. The designers worked through trial and error to achieve the perfect result. Each section was carefully planned to ensure that the result was aesthetically pleasing and functional.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in December 2023 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- Owners are extremely satisfied with their new living space and especially appreciate the storage solutions and the sliding door. The overall design is aesthetically pleasing and functional, and the integration of storage space makes the interior tidy and harmonious. Family members feel the positive impact of the remodel and enjoy the comfort and functionality. Optimized storage keeps the home clean and orderly by concentrating items in a few core locations, making it easy to find and organize items.
- Research
- The designers used simple lines and natural materials to create an impression of Japanese Zen aesthetics. Reducing unnecessary decorations creates a quiet space for minimalist lovers. The design emphasizes the sense of layer and smoothness. The designers utilized straight lines and blocks to reveal the natural look of the materials and combine them with a variety of textures to interpret the calmness and inner beauty of Zen. In addition, the optimized storage and circulation design enhances the efficiency of the space and realizes the minimalism from the heart to the living space.
- Inspiration
- The project is a renovation of an old apartment. The owner has been living abroad for a long time and expects the home to have no complicated design and leave a natural and comfortable attitude to life. With this in mind, the designers used simple lines and natural materials to create an impression of Japanese Zen aesthetics. Reducing unnecessary decorations creates a quiet space for minimalist lovers. The layout optimizes storage and circulation efficiency, utilizing every inch of space while maximizing space efficiency. Natural textured materials embody the aesthetics of Zen inner peace.
