About Sense of Home Residential Interior
This residential interior design was developed to enhance spatial continuity within a compact open plan layout that integrates kitchen, dining, and living areas. Custom millwork and continuous material applications were used to define functional zones without physical separation, supporting unobstructed circulation and visual interaction. Linear lighting elements reinforce spatial hierarchy while maintaining material cohesion across the domestic environment. The resulting configuration balances functional efficiency with visual clarity, promoting comfort and adaptability in everyday use.
The Sense of Home Residential Interior by Nathália Cristina de Souza Vilela Telis represents a sophisticated achievement within contemporary residential design practice, demonstrating how rigorously considered spatial planning, material selection, and compositional discipline can generate environments that serve both aesthetic contemplation and daily domestic life with equal facility and grace. This work participates in the broader movement toward warm minimalism that has emerged as a significant counter-response to the starkness of earlier minimalist orthodoxies, seeking instead to preserve the visual clarity, spatial generosity, and material honesty of reductive design approaches while reintroducing layers of sensory warmth, tactile invitation, and human-scaled comfort that honor the psychological and emotional dimensions of dwelling rather than privileging formal purity alone. The designer's technical accomplishment manifests most clearly in the masterful orchestration of spatial flow between functional zones, wherein the foreground dining area establishes a gravitational anchor point through the sculptural mass of the oval table and its constellation of six chairs, their mid-century modern forms exhibiting the restrained elegance of Scandinavian furniture tradition with gently curved backs, angled legs, and pale neutral upholstery that invites prolonged seated comfort while maintaining visual lightness. The compositional intelligence extends to the vertical articulation of wall surfaces through raised paneling that introduces dimensional relief and subtle shadow play without ornamental excess, a technique that acknowledges classical architectural traditions of wall articulation while translating them into contemporary minimalist vocabulary through clean geometry and monochromatic treatment. Particularly noteworthy is the pendant lighting fixture, a linear brass armature suspending six opalescent globes in carefully calibrated asymmetry that provides both functional illumination and sculptural presence, its diagonal trajectory across the upper register creating visual dynamism and drawing the eye upward to appreciate the volume of the space while its warm metallic finish and soft diffused light contribute to the overall atmosphere of cultivated domestic comfort. The chromatic sophistication of the palette demonstrates refined color sensibility, restricting the range to warm neutrals—honey oak, creamy ivory, walnut brown, soft taupe, pale gray—with brass providing the primary metallic accent and a single lotus blossom artwork introducing the only representational element, this restraint allowing material textures and spatial relationships to emerge as primary compositional content rather than competing with chromatic complexity. The designer's handling of the threshold between dining and living zones exhibits spatial intelligence, employing a three-dimensional geometric lattice screen that provides visual separation and architectural punctuation without imposing physical barriers, allowing sight lines and ambient light to flow between zones while defining distinct functional territories, a solution that honors the open-plan residential tradition while acknowledging the psychological value of subtle spatial differentiation within continuous volumes. The material palette speaks to a design philosophy valuing natural substances and honest expression: solid wood furniture and flooring displaying visible grain patterns, woven natural fiber in the artwork frame, fabric upholstery with perceptible textile character, brass and glass in their inherent material states without surface disguise, each material selected for its tactile and visual qualities and deployed without concealment or artifice, an approach consistent with materiality-focused design movements emphasizing transparency of construction and celebration of inherent substance characteristics. The lighting strategy demonstrates layered thinking, combining diffused natural illumination from the background window, ambient artificial light from recessed ceiling fixtures, and focal sculptural illumination from the pendant globes to create a high-key environment with warm color temperature that flatters human complexion, enhances natural wood tones, and establishes a welcoming atmosphere regardless of external daylight conditions, the absence of dramatic shadows or high-contrast lighting suggesting a philosophy that privileges even comfort over theatrical effect. Thematically, the work explores the tension and ultimate synthesis between aesthetic refinement and functional domesticity, between the visual discipline of minimalist composition and the sensory warmth of home, between the designer's controlling hand and the inhabitant's lived experience, suggesting that these apparent oppositions can be reconciled through thoughtful material selection, spatial generosity, and restraint in decorative application, the space reading as carefully composed yet not precious, orderly yet not rigid, elegant yet approachable. The singular artwork—a botanical rendering of a lotus blossom within layered natural and wood framing—introduces symbolic content suggesting purity, enlightenment, and organic growth while its soft beige tonality and double-frame presentation maintain chromatic and compositional harmony with the surrounding environment, functioning simultaneously as focal accent and integrated element, neither dominating attention nor disappearing into background neutrality. This residential interior invites consideration of how contemporary domestic environments might honor both the eye's desire for visual coherence and the body's need for tactile comfort, how spaces can achieve photographic polish while remaining genuinely inhabitable, how design intention can guide daily experience without constraining it, and ultimately how the designer's role might encompass not only the creation of beautiful compositions but the facilitation of beautiful living, prompting viewers to contemplate their own domestic environments and the balance they strike between aesthetic aspiration and the accommodations of daily existence.

Design Interview about Sense of Home Residential Interior
The main inspiration behind this design was the idea of home as a sanctuary. For the client, home is a place of protection, peace, and emotional comfort, a space where the outside world remains outside. She dreamed of creating an environment where she could fully relax, feel safe, and enjoy meaningful moments with her family. The design was developed around this philosophy, combining warmth, harmony, and functionality to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere that supports everyday well-being.
My main focus was to create a home that would provide a genuine sense of tranquility and belonging. Every design decision was made to reinforce comfort, visual harmony, and emotional well-being. I wanted the client to feel protected and at ease from the moment she entered the apartment, creating an environment that encourages relaxation, family connection, and a slower pace of life.
My future plans for this award-winning design are to continue sharing its message and philosophy with a broader audience. The project demonstrates how residential design can positively influence everyday life by creating environments that promote comfort, emotional well-being, and a sense of belonging. I hope the ideas explored in this project inspire future residential designs and encourage a more human-centered approach, where the home is understood not only as a physical space, but as a sanctuary that supports quality of life and personal fulfillment.
The design process began in April 2023, when the concept was first developed in close collaboration with the client. After several stages of design refinement and coordination, construction started in mid-2024 and was completed in mid-2025. The project is located in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The project was commissioned by the client, whose lifelong dream was to create a home that truly felt like a refuge. She believed that nothing should disturb the sense of peace found within her home. This philosophy became the foundation of the design, inspiring every decision throughout the process. The concept was created to provide warmth, comfort, protection, and a strong sense of belonging, transforming the apartment into a place where everyday life could be lived with calm and balance.
This project was commissioned for a private residential client and was developed exclusively for her personal use. There are no plans to sell, license, or transfer the production rights of the design. The project was conceived as a unique response to the client’s lifestyle, values, and vision of home, making it highly personalized and specific to its context.
Residential design has always been especially meaningful to me because of its direct impact on people's quality of life. A home is where we create memories, find comfort, and reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones. What inspired me in this project was the opportunity to create more than a beautiful space; I wanted to design an environment that would provide a genuine sense of peace, security, and belonging. Helping people feel truly at home is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work as a designer.
As with any design project, I am continuously inspired by architecture, interior design, exhibitions, and industry events. These experiences help expand my understanding of materials, spatial solutions, and design possibilities. However, the strongest influence for this project was not a particular designer or reference, but the client herself. Her vision of home as a place of peace, protection, and emotional comfort guided the design process and shaped many of the decisions that define the project today.
This design is intended for people who see their home as more than just a place to live. It is designed for individuals who value comfort, emotional well-being, and a strong sense of belonging. The project particularly resonates with those who seek a peaceful and welcoming environment where they can disconnect from external pressures, spend meaningful time with family, and feel truly at ease in their daily lives.
What sets this project apart is its emotional foundation. Rather than being driven by trends or visual statements, the design was guided by the client's relationship with her home. Every space was created to support a feeling of peace, comfort, and security. The project prioritizes how the client feels within the environment, transforming the apartment into a true personal refuge where daily life can unfold with calm and balance.
The name Sense of Home reflects the central idea behind the project: creating a place that goes beyond aesthetics and functionality to provide a genuine feeling of belonging. For the client, home represents safety, comfort, and peace, a refuge from the demands of the outside world. The name expresses that emotional connection and the atmosphere we sought to create throughout the apartment. Every design decision was guided by the desire to make the space feel warm, welcoming, and deeply personal, allowing the client to truly feel at home.
The project was developed using AutoCAD for technical drawings and documentation, SketchUp for 3D modeling, and V-Ray for visualizations and renderings. In addition to digital tools, mood boards, material research, site visits, and regular meetings with the client played an important role in the design process, helping ensure that every decision aligned with her vision of comfort, peace, and well-being.
The most unique aspect of this design is its emotional foundation. Every decision was guided by the client's belief that home should be a place of peace, protection, and comfort. Rather than following trends or creating a statement piece, the project focused on fostering a genuine sense of belonging and well-being. The result is a highly personal environment that reflects the client's values and transforms everyday living into a calmer and more meaningful experience.
I developed the project independently, overseeing all aspects of the design process from concept creation to technical detailing. The most important collaboration was with the client herself, whose vision of home as a place of peace, comfort, and security guided many of the design decisions throughout the project.
Technology was not a defining element of this project. The primary focus was on spatial quality, material selection, functionality, and emotional comfort. Rather than relying on advanced technological features, the design sought to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere through thoughtful planning, natural materials, balanced proportions, and careful attention to the client’s lifestyle and daily needs.
Yes, research is part of my design process, particularly when exploring materials, products, and current developments in the industry. However, the most important source of information for this project was understanding the client’s lifestyle, habits, and emotional relationship with her home. Combined with my professional experience, this helped guide decisions that were tailored to her specific needs rather than following general trends. The goal was to create a space that felt authentic, comfortable, and deeply connected to the way she lives.
One of the greatest challenges was maintaining the level of quality and precision expected throughout the execution phase. The client had very high standards and paid close attention to every detail, which required continuous coordination, careful supervision, and frequent adjustments during construction. While demanding, this process ultimately contributed to a stronger final result. It reinforced the importance of clear communication, patience, and attention to detail, ensuring that the completed project fully reflected the client's vision and expectations.
I decided to submit this project to an international design competition because I believe it represents values that are important to my work as a designer. Participating in international awards is an opportunity to have my ideas, design approach, and professional experience evaluated within a global context. It is always rewarding to see years of knowledge, dedication, and attention to detail recognized by an independent international jury, while also sharing the project with a broader audience.
This project reinforced the importance of patience, communication, and attention to detail throughout the execution process. The client had very high expectations, which required continuous coordination, careful supervision, and a commitment to achieving the highest possible quality in every stage of the project. The experience strengthened my ability to manage complex situations, align expectations, and remain focused on delivering a result that fully reflects the client’s vision.
One aspect worth highlighting is that this project was never about creating a showcase of design trends. Instead, it was about creating a genuine home, one that supports the client's lifestyle, values, and emotional well-being. I believe the most successful residential projects are those that continue to make sense years after they are completed because they are rooted in the people who live there. More than designing spaces, my goal is to create environments where people feel comfortable, protected, and truly connected to their home.
