About Riva Villa

Riva Villa is a three level residence organized around a sculptural spiral stair rising through a double-height indoor garden atrium. The vertical void anchors the plan, choreographing movement and framing layered views. A continuous timber envelope improves acoustic comfort, while monolithic stone volumes ground key functions with calibrated weight. Subtle metal detailing and glare controlled, layered lighting create a refined quiet luxury atmosphere that shifts from crisp daylight to intimate evening scenes.

Dilek Karaman's Riva Villa engages the evolving design conversation surrounding biophilic residential environments, wherein the integration of natural elements within rigorously composed contemporary architectural frameworks seeks to address fundamental human needs for connection to living systems and organic forms within domestic spaces. This interior demonstrates sophisticated resolution of competing design imperatives, balancing the clean geometric language of modernist spatial planning with the irregular, growth-derived forms of botanical life, achieving synthesis rather than mere juxtaposition. The compositional architecture reveals careful attention to proportional relationships, employing the horizontal emphasis characteristic of contemporary residential design to establish visual calm and spatial generosity, while introducing vertical elements through both architectural paneling systems and the carefully positioned bonsai specimen that provides focal counterpoint without disrupting overall equilibrium. The material palette demonstrates notable restraint and coherence, selecting warm-toned wood veneers that register richness without heaviness, complemented by the cooler grey upholstery tones that prevent the overall scheme from skewing excessively warm, and punctuated by the dramatic veining of the marble feature wall that introduces gestural vitality within the controlled architectural framework. The lighting design evidences particular accomplishment, employing multiple concealed sources to model surfaces, emphasize material qualities, create atmospheric gradation, and establish visual hierarchy, the warm color temperature supporting the earth-tone palette while maintaining sufficient illumination for functional use. The spatial organization suggests awareness of circulation patterns and experiential sequence, the layering of zones from foreground seating through middle-ground architectural elements to background apertures creating visual depth and inviting movement through space, each zone offering distinct material and tonal character while maintaining overall unity. The integration of the botanical element functions beyond decorative addition, serving as living sculpture that introduces scale relationships, provides organic counterpoint to rectilinear geometry, and activates the vertical dimension, its placement suggesting careful consideration of sightlines and compositional balance. The metallic sculptural form visible at right, with its fluid biomorphic geometry, extends the dialogue between natural inspiration and refined fabrication, its reflective surface quality contrasting with the matte wood and textile finishes while echoing the organic themes established by the botanical presence. One might observe how this environment negotiates between architectural control and organic vitality, between material luxury and experiential serenity, inviting contemplation of how contemporary residential design addresses fundamental human desires for both order and connection to natural processes within spaces of daily living.

Design Interview about Riva Villa

The main principle behind Riva Villa is to create a calm, timeless and emotionally balanced residence where structure, light, material and nature work together. The inspiration comes from coastal calm, fluid movement and the soft curves of wind-shaped forms. This idea is translated into the sculptural ribbon staircase, the double-height indoor garden atrium and the warm timber envelope. The design follows a biophilic quiet luxury approach, aiming to create a home that feels breathable, tactile and refined rather than trend-driven.

My main focus was to design a large-scale residence that feels calm, intimate and coherent despite its size. I wanted to create a strong spatial identity through the sculptural staircase and atrium, while maintaining comfort, acoustic softness and material warmth throughout the home. The aim was to achieve a refined living environment where public and private areas flow naturally, and where every material, lighting detail and sightline contributes to a quiet luxury atmosphere.

My future plan is to use Riva Villa as an important reference for further residential projects that explore biophilic design, sculptural circulation and material-led interiors. The project opened valuable questions about how a residence can feel both iconic and calm. I would like to continue developing this approach in future private living spaces, especially through indoor garden elements, concealed lighting, natural materials and spatial compositions that support emotional comfort.

Riva Villa was designed in 2025 in Riva, Istanbul, Turkiye. The design process included concept development, spatial planning, material research, staircase studies, lighting coordination and interior detailing. Because the project required a strong relationship between the sculptural staircase, double-height atrium and overall interior atmosphere, the concept was developed through several stages of refinement.

Riva Villa was designed from the desire to create a residence that feels both artful and livable. The concept was shaped by the idea of turning vertical circulation into an emotional and sculptural experience rather than treating it only as a functional element. The design responds to the needs of a private residence, but it also follows a strong inspiration based on fluid movement, indoor nature, tactile materials and a calm sense of luxury.

Riva Villa is an interior architecture project intended for realization as a private residential environment. It is not a product designed for mass production, so production rights are not applicable in the same way as they would be for furniture or industrial design. The project can be developed and implemented through the studio’s design direction together with the necessary technical, fabrication and construction teams.

I am deeply interested in residential interiors because homes are where design has the most personal and emotional effect on daily life. Riva Villa allowed me to explore how a private residence can combine comfort, identity, nature and craft. The project gave me the opportunity to design not only rooms, but a complete living experience shaped by movement, light, material texture and the presence of an indoor garden.

The project was influenced more by broader spatial and natural references than by one specific designer. Coastal calm, organic movement, biophilic interiors, sculptural staircases and gallery-like residences informed the design approach. I was especially interested in how a staircase could become a living sculpture and how natural materials could define the architecture of the interior rather than simply decorate it.

The target customer is a private residential client who values refined living, natural materials, spatial comfort and strong design identity. Riva Villa is suitable for users who want a home that feels luxurious but not excessive, elegant but not cold, and contemporary but timeless. It is designed for people who appreciate quiet atmospheres, tactile surfaces, indoor nature, artful details and a strong connection between architecture and daily life.

What sets Riva Villa apart is the way the sculptural ribbon staircase and double-height indoor garden atrium organize the entire residence. The staircase is not only a circulation element; it is the emotional and visual center of the home. Around it, timber, stone, light and planting create a complete atmosphere. The design avoids visual noise and instead creates identity through proportion, material continuity, controlled reveals and refined details.

The name Riva Villa comes from its location in Riva, Istanbul. The name also carries a sense of calm, openness and connection to nature, which reflects the character of the project. For me, Riva Villa represents a residence shaped by softness, light and natural rhythm. The name is simple and direct, but it also supports the atmosphere of a quiet, refined and nature-connected home.

The design process included conceptual sketching, digital drafting, 3D modeling, visualization and detailed material studies. These tools were used to develop the sculptural staircase, the double-height atrium, spatial flow, lighting layers, material transitions and custom details. Technical coordination tools were also important for studying staircase construction, lighting integration, timber wall systems, stone fabrication and acoustic performance.

The most unique aspect of Riva Villa is the sculptural ribbon staircase rising through the double-height indoor garden atrium. This element creates the identity of the house and transforms vertical circulation into a slow, curated spatial experience. It works as both function and artwork. Together with the indoor tree, warm timber architecture and layered lighting, it becomes a living landmark that continuously reorients the user throughout the home.

A project like Riva Villa requires collaboration with specialized teams in staircase engineering, timber application, stone fabrication, lighting, planting systems and interior detailing. The seamless ribbon stair, vein-matched stone elements, acoustic timber wall systems and discreet lighting strategy all require precise coordination. The design depends on the balance between creative vision and technical execution to achieve a refined result without visual noise.

Technology plays a quiet but essential role in Riva Villa. CNC-cut substructures support the precise geometry of the ribbon staircase, while concealed lighting systems shape the atmosphere without disturbing the clean interior language. Acoustic backing, accessible subframes, dimmable lighting scenes and low-VOC finishes support comfort and performance. Technology is not used as a visible feature, but as a hidden layer that enables craft, precision and daily wellbeing.

Yes, the project was informed by research into acoustic comfort, biophilic design, lighting quality, material longevity and healthy indoor environments. We studied how a large residence could feel calm and breathable through the use of an atrium, indoor planting, warm timber surfaces and layered concealed lighting. Research also focused on staircase geometry, visual continuity, glare control, humidity considerations for planting and the balance between hard stone surfaces and soft acoustic materials.

The main challenge was achieving iconic presence without visual noise. The ribbon staircase needed to feel seamless, sculptural and refined, while still being technically feasible and comfortable to use. Another challenge was balancing the weight of monolithic stone volumes with the warmth and rhythm of timber surfaces. The indoor atrium also required careful consideration of planting, maintenance, lighting and humidity control. Every detail had to support a calm atmosphere without making the home feel overly designed.

I decided to submit Riva Villa because I believed the project represented a strong and personal approach to contemporary residential interiors. It combines biophilic design, sculptural movement, natural materials, lighting and quiet luxury in a coherent way. An international design competition offered the opportunity to share this work with a wider design audience and to position the project within a global discussion about refined, human-centered living spaces.

Riva Villa strengthened my understanding of how a single spatial element can define the emotional identity of an entire residence. The project improved my approach to sculptural circulation, material restraint and lighting as an architectural tool. It also deepened my awareness of how nature can be integrated into a home not as decoration, but as a living part of the spatial experience. Most importantly, it taught me how to create impact through calmness rather than excess.

Riva Villa is important to me because it explores luxury through silence, proportion, material quality and emotional comfort. The project is not about creating a showy home; it is about designing a residence that feels grounded, breathable and deeply refined. Its value lies in the balance between sculptural presence and everyday comfort. For me, Riva Villa represents a home where architecture, interior design and nature come together as one continuous experience.
