About Reflex Pendant Lamp
Reflex is a pendant lamp designed for general and accent lighting. The main structure is a circle divided in the middle and made of natural fabric that is both translucent and reflective. Soft, scattered light similar to light in a forest is produced. A metal ball inside holds two LED sources covered with frosted glass diffusers. The height is adjustable, and the fabric shade can be removed for cleaning. The ceiling cup uses magnetic fasteners, so no bolts remain visible. The shape and the type of light were selected through research with a focus group.
Within the discourse of contemporary lighting design, Alexey Danilin's Reflex Pendant Lamp emerges as a thoughtful exploration of light as sculptural medium, demonstrating how functional objects may transcend utilitarian purpose to achieve expressive resonance typically reserved for fine art. The work engages productively with traditions of kinetic sculpture and tensile architecture, suggesting affinities with the mathematical elegance found in the work of pioneering spatial designers who employed minimal material to define maximum volume. The designer's compositional strategy employs intersecting elliptical planes of translucent mesh that function simultaneously as light-diffusing membranes and form-defining surfaces, creating an interplay between concealment and revelation as the illuminated glass orbs appear through multiple layered veils. The chromatic restraint—limiting the palette to warm neutrals and golden luminosity against a sophisticated gray field—demonstrates mature understanding of how reduction amplifies impact, allowing subtle tonal variations to register with heightened sensitivity. Technical accomplishment appears evident in the precise tensioning of the mesh material across slender wireframe armatures, achieving surfaces that maintain geometric discipline while suggesting the organic suppleness of natural forms such as seed pods or unfurling leaves. The work invites consideration of how light transforms space, how transparency creates depth, and how geometric structure may accommodate organic gesture. One might contemplate the poetic possibilities that emerge when engineering precision serves atmospheric creation, when functional illumination becomes meditation on luminosity itself.

- Unique Properties
- Thanks to research based on introspective psychology, each element and properties of the lamp are created under the influence of the focus group. For example, first we chose the shape of the object and it turned out that the shape of the circle is very close for everyone, as a symbol of the sun. Then we ask to choose the type of lighting through associations. It turned out that people like the reprinted light in the forest. Therefore, we made an asymmetric construction with these properties.

- Production Technology
- The main structure in the form of a circle dissected in the middle is made of natural fabric with important properties: it is translucent to create soft lighting. At the same time, it is reflective to create reprinted lighting. Inside the lamp is a metal ball with two light sources. Inside are LEDs covered with glass diffusers. Metal pipe in the form of smooth lines is combined with round structures of the lamp. The ceiling bowl with magnetic fasteners is devoid of visual noise in the form of fasteners and bolts. There is a driver inside.
- Project Duration
- The project started in April 2022 in Moscow and finished in August 2022 in Moscow, and was exhibited in Interlight Russia 2022 in September 2022.
- Operation Flow
- The lamp can be used for main and point lighting in space - above the desk or instead of wall bracket by the bed, or create compositions from several lamps using in a variety of spaces. The height is adjustable. The lamp is easy to use, and due to the vertical shape, dust does not accumulate. The lampshade is removable for cleaning.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration was the methods of investigating introspective psychology, which helped make the inner world of many people more harmonious and conscious. Using these methods, we studied how a person feels different shapes and properties of a light object. We used them at every stage of the project development, and they created a lamp with characteristics that are as close as possible to a person. It was made in a way for him to like it for many years and thereby we could limit consumption for the benefit of the environment.
The name of the lamp is associated with reflection. This concept is very close to introspective psychology and means understanding and analyzing the inner world of a person. - Image Credits
