About Peri Chair
Peri is a chair inspired by the Tupi Guarani culture and its close relationship with nature. The name comes from a Tupi Guarani word meaning field of reeds. The base is made of solid wood, while the seat and backrest are made of sisal, a natural and biodegradable fiber. Computer controlled machines shape the organic form of the wood, and the finishing is completed by hand. The chair measures 610 mm by 545 mm by 845 mm. The ergonomic shape supports comfortable use. Peri joins traditional craft techniques with sustainable production methods.
Luan Del Savio's Peri Chair emerges from a distinguished lineage of furniture design that honors the symbiotic relationship between traditional craft methodologies and contemporary formal innovation, positioning itself within the broader revival of artisanal techniques that characterizes much of early twenty-first century design consciousness, the work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of material behavior as the continuous wooden frame exploits the natural plasticity of steam-bent hardwood to achieve structural efficiency through curvature rather than joinery mass, thereby reducing material use while enhancing both visual lightness and physical comfort, the chromatic relationship between the warm sienna-toned wood and the natural ochre fiber creates a harmonious material palette that speaks to authenticity and honest expression of substance, the weaving techniques employed across seat and back surfaces reference vernacular craft traditions including both caning conventions and rope-seat construction methods historically associated with rural furniture making yet here elevated through precise contemporary execution, compositionally the chair succeeds in balancing visual weight through the interplay of solid wooden curves and transparent woven planes that allow light and air to permeate the form, the ergonomic considerations evident in the gentle backward angle of the backrest and the supportive splay of the armrests suggest careful attention to human proportions and comfort requirements, presented within a minimalist architectural context of white walls and polished concrete the design demonstrates its versatility and ability to bring warmth and organic presence to otherwise austere spaces, the inclusion of living plants beyond the window reinforces thematic connections between the natural materials of the chair and broader environmental consciousness, viewers might contemplate how contemporary designers negotiate between industrial efficiency and craft intimacy, and what values emerge when traditional hand techniques are preserved and celebrated within modern design practice.

- Production Technology
- The Peri chair is made using sustainable wood for the base and sisal for the seat and backrest. Its production results from the symbiosis between technology and craftsmanship, where state-of-the-art CNC machines sculpt the organic design into the wood, while manual finishing creates the identity and soul of each piece.
Sisal, a natural and biodegradable fiber, is renowned for its durability and sustainable origin, widely used in traditional craftsmanship. The combination of these indigenous artisan techniques with modern eco-friendly production methods ensures a durable and environmentally responsible product. - Design Challenge
- The biggest challenge was integrating traditional techniques with modern production processes while ensuring the sustainability of materials. We used sisal to represent the fibers traditionally used by the Tupi-Guarani in braided forms, maintaining traditions and embracing sustainability. The lack of formal documentation on Tupi-Guarani artisanal methods required an adaptive and collaborative approach.
- Project Duration
- The project was developed within a ten-month timeframe, from the creation of initial sketches to the final piece. All stages took place in the cities of Maravilha and Santa Helena. Within this timeframe, several prototypes were developed to verify correct ergonomics and to refine and improve specific design elements. It was publicly presented in Florianópolis as part of the Território collection.
- Operation Flow
- With an ergonomic design that provides comfort to the user. Interacting with the object is intuitive, allowing anyone to appreciate its functionality and natural beauty. The finishing and selected materials ensure durability and easy maintenance.
- Research
- The research for the Peri chair involved an ethnographic investigation into the Tupi Guarani culture and its traditional craftsmanship methods. The goal was to create a design that reflected this cultural heritage.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration for the Peri chair came from the rich Tupi Guarani culture and its deep connection with nature. The concept of "Peri" as guardian of the forests and rivers motivated the creation of a design that honors this spiritual heritage. The choice of materials and shapes aims to reflect ancestral wisdom and the harmony between humans and the environment, providing a product that is both a cultural tribute and a functional furniture piece.
