About Peach Blossom Residence

Peach Blossom is a residential interior for retirement living, completed in Taiwan in 2021. The home covers 109 square meters and contains four bedrooms, a living room, a dining room and two bathrooms. The living room has a mountain-shaped ceiling and a peony installation made from four materials and more than seventy panels, hand-assembled in thirteen layers. The dining area wall combines thin tiles with gold-leaf sconces. Marble, granite, cypress wood, mirrors and titanium gold finishes are used throughout. The kitchen was enlarged for easier daily cooking.

Wan-Ting Hung's Peach Blossom Residence engages contemporary residential design discourse through its sophisticated negotiation between sculptural expression and functional domesticity, positioning the work within trajectories that trace from mid-century organic modernism through minimalist restraint toward current hospitality-influenced luxury residential vocabularies that privilege material refinement, chromatic subtlety, and the integration of art-object elements within habitable environments. The spatial composition demonstrates considerable technical accomplishment in its layered depth construction, moving through clearly articulated foreground, middle ground, and background zones while maintaining visual coherence across the extended spatial field, the asymmetrical balance achieved through the strategic positioning of the dominant sculptural relief at left as primary visual anchor counterweighted by the darker rectilinear massing of the media wall and storage elements at right suggests studied attention to proportional relationships and compositional tension-resolution, while the chromatic sophistication evident in the restrained palette of cool and warm neutrals punctuated by the saturated cobalt seating and golden accent illumination reveals nuanced understanding of how color saturation, value relationships, and temperature contrast create spatial hierarchy and emotional atmosphere within inhabited environments. The central thematic exploration appears to celebrate the integration of sculptural artistic gesture within functional residential architecture, the biomorphic wall relief transcending mere decoration to function as spatial definer, luminous focal point, and carrier of organic naturalistic associations that soften the orthogonal geometry of the surrounding architecture, suggesting meditation on the relationship between organic and geometric form languages, between art object and architectural element, between contemplative aesthetic experience and pragmatic domestic function, the space invites consideration of how contemporary residential environments might serve simultaneously as functional habitation settings and as galleries for material exploration and formal experimentation. The translucent partitions glimpsed in the background suggest traditional screen-based spatial division strategies reinterpreted through contemporary materials, potentially referencing vernacular architectural traditions of layered semi-transparent boundaries that create spatial separation while maintaining visual and luminous continuity, the vertical fluted texture at right may evoke classical architectural vocabularies of column and pilaster rhythms translated into contemporary material expression, while the weathered mottled finish of the media surround with its metallic inclusions suggests abstract expressionist surface treatments or natural geological formations, carrying associations of temporal depth, material transformation, and artisanal craft within industrially produced residential contexts. The careful orchestration of multiple lighting systems working in concert, the ambient track lighting providing general illumination, accent lighting creating focal emphasis and warm atmospheric glow, natural daylight contributing soft diffused luminosity, and sculptural backlighting generating ethereal halo effects, demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how layered illumination strategies create temporal variation, spatial depth, and emotional modulation throughout daily cycles, viewers might contemplate how such residential environments negotiate between display and inhabitation, between aesthetic contemplation and embodied dwelling, and how material choices, proportional relationships, and chromatic decisions work collectively to create atmospheres that support both practical daily activities and moments of aesthetic appreciation, the space poses gentle questions about the role of beauty, craft, and formal sophistication within domestic environments and how design excellence might contribute to enhanced quality of daily lived experience.

Production Technology
The space incorporates special paint, spray paint, mirrors, fabric, granite, cypress wood, grilles, and engineered hardwood flooring. Various marbles with distinct hues and patterns, combined with imported thin tiles, create a naturally rugged aesthetic. Modern elements like titanium gold contrast raw textures, as seen in the TV wall, where crystalline granite subtly glows under concealed lighting. The bathrooms feature a black-and-white contrast with gold accents, exuding sophistication and grandeur.
Design Challenge
The host's passion for art and meticulous attention to detail embodies perfectionism. The designer merged this artistic pursuit with the homeowner's characteristics, highlighted by a large peony installation. Made of over seventy panels and four materials, it's enhanced by lighting that radiates cultural richness and aesthetic value. The design not only tackles challenges but also becomes the homeowner's proud centerpiece, transforming the space into an artistic realm that goes beyond the traditional definition of a home.
Project Duration
The project finished in 2021 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The space features a patchwork and layering approach with diverse materials. The wine cellar combines rugged stone and titanium gold, contrasting raw nature with refined elegance. The master bathroom's sink boasts a gold leaf surface layered with crystal glass, enhancing luxury and giving the home an art gallery feel. A specially designed host's room reflects the homeowner's preferences, with a screen dividing social and private areas at night. Louvered panels replace curtains, while a dark color scheme creates an immersive personal retreat.
Research
This retirement residence is designed for comfort and artistic expression, inspired by the classic tale 'The Peach Blossom Spring.' The designer crafted exploratory pathways, with each area featuring a display wall that feels like a work of art. The living room has a mountain-shaped ceiling and a creative peony artwork made of 13 layers and 70-plus panels, evoking the beauty of a blooming flower. The dining area features thin tiles and Italian gold-leaf sconces, symbolizing the universe's mystery, complemented by a painting of Earth, creating a serene and artistic atmosphere.
Inspiration
The host has stringent requirements for materials and texture. The designer offers bold and innovative suggestions, using "The Peach Blossom Spring" as inspiration for the circulation, while incorporating the peony, as depicted by early Qing dynasty painter Yun Shouping, as the main visual element. Various materials come together to create a unique modern installation art piece. Each large wall is designed like a work of art, transforming the home into a gallery that beautifully showcases the interplay of art and daily life.
