About Obori Soma Ware Matsunaga Kiln Shop and Atelier

Matsunaga Kiln was located in Fukushima, Japan, producing the designated traditional crafts with more than 300 years of history. One proprietary feature of Obori Soma Ware is its double-layered structure, which enables this daily-use ceramics to hold boiling water and prevents it from cooling down. Designers wanted to incorporate and express this feature in our architecture. Designers believe that the different scales of architecture and ceramics, in the same composition, influence each other.

Situated within the distinguished tradition of spaces designed to honor artisanal heritage, Naoya TOCHIO's interior for the Obori Soma Ware Matsunaga Kiln Shop and Atelier represents a thoughtful synthesis of vernacular building techniques and contemporary spatial sensibilities. The design appears to draw inspiration from traditional timber construction methods while reimagining them through a refined contemporary lens that emphasizes structural honesty and material authenticity. The architectural strategy establishes a compelling dialogue between the monumental and the intimate, as the soaring post-and-beam framework creates a sense of civic grandeur while the carefully scaled display elements maintain human proportion and encourage close engagement with the ceramic objects. The chromatic restraint exercised throughout demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how neutral warm tones can serve as an ideal foil for displaying craft objects, allowing the subtle variations in ceramic glazes to command visual attention without competing with their architectural envelope. Technical accomplishment is evident in the precision joinery visible at structural intersections, where beams meet columns with clean geometric clarity that celebrates the craft of building itself. The integration of the pyramidal skylight serves both functional and symbolic purposes, flooding the central volume with diffused daylight that evokes the natural illumination of traditional workshops while creating a focal point that draws the eye upward in contemplation. One might observe how the transparent facade dissolves boundaries between interior commerce and exterior landscape, positioning the act of selecting handcrafted ceramics within a broader connection to place and natural beauty. The work invites consideration of how architectural space might serve as mediator between ancient making traditions and contemporary life, and viewers are encouraged to contemplate how such environments shape our understanding of and appreciation for objects made by human hands.

Inspiration
In this project, a top light is installed at the top of the house. The top light brings plenty of light to the interior space. In the store, it expresses precise and vivid colors, and in the workshop, where delicate work is required, gentle and uniform light pours in through the shoji screens on the ceiling with high illumination. The top light above the checkout counter functions as a light that changes the impression of the back of the counter.
