About MyO Sports Wearable

MyO is a sports wearable suite designed for fitness enthusiasts and athletes who want insights into muscle performance. The suite includes a waist belt, a leg strap and a shoulder strap, each fitted with electromyography sensors that monitor muscle activity. A detachable receiver unit sends the data to a companion application, which gives feedback on muscle engagement, fatigue and form. The modular parts can be adjusted for a comfortable fit, and a shared charging dock serves all components. Medical grade silicone and hypoallergenic fabrics are used for durability and comfort.

Tielin Ding's MyO Sports Wearable system represents a thoughtful contribution to the expanding domain of wearable physiological monitoring technology, positioning itself within the broader movement toward quantified athletic performance and data-informed training methodologies that have transformed contemporary sports science and personal fitness practices over the past two decades, the design demonstrates accomplished integration of multiple sensing modalities into a cohesive ecosystem where individual components communicate through what appears to be wireless protocols to generate comprehensive biomechanical analysis, the formal achievement here resides in the designer's success in translating complex sensing requirements into approachable geometric forms that balance technical necessity with user-centered ergonomic considerations, each device exhibiting careful attention to the relationship between electronic functionality and bodily contact zones, the chest sensor's H-shaped profile suggesting strategic placement around the sternum and rib cage for cardiac and respiratory monitoring while the larger thigh sensor's paddle configuration implies secure surface contact for muscle activity detection, the compositional merit of the presentation photograph enhances appreciation of the systematic design thinking, the radial arrangement within the case suggesting not merely storage but a narrative of deployment sequence, perhaps indicating the order in which an athlete would don these devices in preparation for training or competition, the chromatic strategy demonstrates sophisticated understanding of color psychology in performance contexts, the dominant white palette projecting cleanliness, precision, and medical-grade reliability while the orange accent stripe serves dual functions as visual wayfinding during hurried pre-event preparation and as brand differentiation in an increasingly crowded wearable technology marketplace, technically the design exhibits notable attention to material selection and surface treatment, the matte finishes reducing glare and fingerprint visibility while suggesting tactile approachability, the visible button interfaces and charging port indicate thoughtful consideration of interaction design and device maintenance rituals, thematically this work engages with fascinating contemporary questions about the relationship between embodied experience and technological mediation, inviting viewers to contemplate how wearable sensing devices transform the traditionally subjective phenomenology of athletic exertion into quantifiable metrics, how the data generated by such systems may enhance performance through objective feedback while simultaneously altering the athlete's relationship to their own bodily awareness, this technological ecosystem seems to propose a partnership model suggested by the visible branding language of training partner rather than a hierarchical relationship between human and machine, positioning the technology as collaborative support rather than authoritative judgment, the work also participates in broader design conversations about the aesthetics of wearable technology and the ongoing challenge of creating devices that users feel comfortable wearing on their bodies during vulnerable moments of physical exertion, the designer appears to have pursued an aesthetic strategy emphasizing technical credibility through geometric clarity and material quality rather than attempting to disguise the devices' technological nature, this honest expression of function through form aligns with enduring industrial design principles while addressing the specific requirements of athletic contexts where reliability and durability prove paramount, viewers might consider how the presentation of these devices in their protective case creates a visual rhetoric of serious equipment deserving careful handling and systematic deployment, how the precision organization suggests ritualized preparation practices that athletes often employ to enter focused performance states, and how this product system reflects evolving cultural attitudes toward bodily optimization, performance enhancement, and the quantification of human physical capabilities.

Production Technology
The MyO sports wearable suite was developed using a user-centered design approach, guided by extensive research into later Gen Y and Gen Z preferences and fitness needs. Prototypes were crafted through iterative testing, combining advanced EMG sensor technology with modular, ergonomic designs. Materials such as medical-grade silicone and hypoallergenic fabrics were chosen for durability, comfort, and sustainability. Additive manufacturing and precision engineering ensured accuracy in fit and function.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge was integrating advanced EMG technology into a compact, ergonomic wearable while meeting diverse user needs. Research involved studying EMG technology and conducting interviews with fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and rehabilitation patients to understand their demand for precise muscle feedback. By combining these insights with iterative prototyping and testing, MyO achieved usability, comfort, and eco-conscious design.
Project Duration
The MyO project began in January 2024 in Savannah, Georgia, and concluded with its non-working prototypes in November 2024 in Savannah, Georgia. The design process included research, sketching, study modeling, prototyping, 3D modeling and rendering, 3D printing, and user testing. MyO now actively participates in international concept design competitions to showcase its innovative approach to wearable sports technology and seek sponsorship or investment opportunities.
Operation Flow
MyO operates seamlessly through its modular wearable suite, which includes a waist belt, leg strap, shoulder strap, and receiver unit. Each device integrates EMG sensors to monitor muscle activity in real-time. The receiver sends Data to a companion app, providing actionable feedback on muscle engagement, fatigue, and form. Users can adjust the fit for ergonomic comfort, and modular components allow easy customization. This design ensures precise performance tracking and optimized training outcomes.
Research
Over 200 questionnaires and 20 interviews revealed a market gap: users demand detailed muscle analytics, but advanced EMG technology remains inaccessible to most. Fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and rehabilitation patients require precise, real-time muscle data for training, performance, and recovery.
Gen Z and Gen Y users prefer eco-friendly, minimalistic designs with sustainable, hypoallergenic materials. These insights shaped MyO, blending professional-grade technology with user-friendly, accessible design.
Inspiration
This project's inspiration is the need to bridge a significant gap in fitness technology for later Gen Y and Gen Z users. Current wearables often lack real-time, muscle-specific feedback, which is crucial for athletes and fitness enthusiasts aiming to optimize performance, prevent injuries, or recover effectively. Drawing on advanced electromyography (EMG) technology and insights from user research, the design prioritizes ergonomic comfort, modern aesthetics, and actionable data.
