About Misterio Luminaires

Misterio is a lighting collection of pendant lamps and wall lamps inspired by the northern lights. The main elements are made of cast glass with a multicolor effect and are shaped like waves frozen in glass. The glass creates colored highlights that form organic patterns on nearby surfaces. A black metal base in the form of a ring holds an LED strip covered with a matte diffuser. The ring is directed inward, so the lighting is soft and the beauty of the glass is emphasized. The collection can be used for main lighting, task lighting or accent lighting.

Alexey Danilin's Misterio Luminaires emerges from the distinguished lineage of studio glass movement innovation married to contemporary Scandinavian and Central European lighting design traditions, where the functional necessity of illumination becomes vehicle for artistic expression and material poetry. The work demonstrates exceptional technical accomplishment in the manipulation of molten glass, each pendant exhibiting the controlled unpredictability that characterizes masterful artisanal production, where the glassblower's breath and gesture become permanently inscribed within the crystalline matrix. The designer appears to engage deeply with light as primary sculptural medium rather than mere illumination source, understanding that the true artwork extends beyond the physical fixtures into the projected caustic patterns that transform surrounding architecture into dynamic luminous canvas. This conceptual sophistication positions the work within broader conversations about the dematerialization of the object and the experiential dimension of functional design, suggesting affinities with phenomenological approaches to spatial practice. The chromatic complexity achieved through the irregular glass surfaces, ranging from warm amber through subtle iridescent passages, demonstrates refined understanding of how light interacts with variable thickness and surface topology to produce optical phenomena impossible through uniform industrial production. The triadic arrangement evokes traditional compositional principles of dynamic balance, with the asymmetrical vertical staggering creating visual rhythm while the consistent formal vocabulary of spherical glass and cylindrical metal housing maintains cohesive design identity. The work invites contemplation of the relationship between containment and emanation, between the precious object and its environmental influence, asking viewers to consider how light shapes our experience of domestic space and how functional objects might transcend utility to become sources of daily aesthetic nourishment and contemplative pause.

Unique Properties
The Misterio collection is a magical symbiosis of light, colour and shape inspired by the Northern Lights. The main elements are made of glass with multi-color coloring. These shapes are like sea waves frozen in glass, which create a mesmerizing game of glare and change with every glance. A fresh solution with a ring element pointing inward provides soft lighting, emphasizes the beauty of the glass, creating picturesque light ornaments on the surrounding surfaces.

Production Technology
The models are made of cast glass with a smooth shape. Transparent glass is created with Multicolor effect. Thanks to this, color highlights are created on the glass and on the neighboring walls in the form of an interesting organic pattern. The metal base of the lamp is created in the form of a ring. Inside is an LED tape covered with a matte diffuser for soft lighting.
Design Challenge
The collection was inspired by the Northern Lights, so an important part of the work was finding the shape and technology to create such a vibrant and colorful light effect. The northern lights are an astronomical phenomenon, so it was decided to use the shape of the sphere, which is a symbol of celestial bodies, and to create a light effect, various techniques for working with glass were studied, and different forms of glass were studied to find out which shapes create the most interesting glare on neighboring planes. All this knowledge was obtained through a long search in a variety of sources.
Project Duration
The project started in January 2023 in Moscow and finished in January 2024 in Moscow, and was exhibited in Interlight in September 2024.
Operation Flow
The luminaries of the collection create a significant luminous flux, so the models can be used in the standard way in the interior. Suspended lamps can be installed as main lighting or additional lighting for the workplace and for the recreation area. Moreover, since the models create bright highlights around them, they can be used for accent lighting in the interior.
Research
An important part of the study was working with glass. Cast glass of such a complex wave shape cannot be made without a seam in the middle. Therefore, it was decided to make it from two halves, and in the middle use a metal ring with LED tape. Also, an important part was the study of the properties of light, since the ring shines inward, it was important to calculate the power of the LED strip so that the lamp creates a lot of light.
Inspiration
Misterio models are magical portals that can transform any space, filling it with mysterious light and atmosphere. The inspiration for them was the northern lights, which the shamans of the northern peoples considered a manifestation of supernatural forces. For example, the Yakuts, the indigenous people of Siberia, believed that the Northern Lights were a manifestation of the powerful spirits of nature.
