About Luminous Lighting and Sound System
Luminous designed to offer ergonomic lighting solution and surround sound system in a single product. It is aimed to create emotions that the users desire to feel and utilized a combination of sound and light to achieve this goal. The sound system developed on the basis of sound reflection and simulates 3D surround sound in the room without the need for wiring and installing multiple speakers around the place. As a pendant light, Luminous creates direct and indirect illumination. This lighting system provides a soft, uniform, and low contrast light which prevents glare and vision problem.

- Luminous offers an ergonomic lighting solution and spherical surround sound system in a single product and aimed to make a new experience for the users by creating an emotion that they desire to feel.
The sound system used in the product, placed above the listener's head and creates surround dome-shaped sound in the room without the need for wiring and installing multiple speakers around the place.
As a pendant light, Luminous has been designed to create indirect lighting. This lighting system provides a soft, uniform, and low-contrast light which prevents glare and vision problems. - Dimensions & Packaging

- Production Technology
- Luminous uses LED light sources along with acrylic diffuser. It is equipped with an Ambient Light Sensor that adjusts the brightness of the LEDs on the basis of the ambient light level in the room. The sound system consists of a sound processor and 20 small speakers that emit the sound in the form of separate channels with different output intensity, in a 360-degree radius and at different firing angles. Consequently, it creates various real and virtual sound sources in the room.
- Design Challenge
- The most challenging issue during the design process was to make a balance between the product's form and functions.
In fact, the core functions of the product had a dominant effect on its form. Moreover, the product should not look unusual, weird and bulky, but appealing, functional and compatible with different environments. Accordingly, more than 20 samples were generated and evaluated in order to find the optimum solution. - Project Duration
- The project started in April 2018 and finished in late September 2018 in Tehran, Iran
- Operation Flow
- Luminous consists of two main parts:
1) Lighting and sound unit,
2) Bluetooth Audio Adapter, that allows the user to interact with the lighting and sound unit, and stream sound and music from a TV, game console, microphone, memory stick, or Blu-ray player wirelessly. - Research
- The main design philosophy of Luminous is to create atmosphere and emotion that the users desire to feel, including peace, excitation, or companionship with friends and colleagues in working or living spaces. On this basis and at the first step, various concepts were generated and it was concluded that the combination of light and sound in a single product can be a practical solution.
Our aim was to create a spatial sound system and natural and efficient lighting solution. Accordingly, and during the 2nd phase, sound and light generation and perception in nature were investigated. Ergonomic guidelines for lighting design also studied.
Then, applicable technologies, the design trend of the current samples and product environment were analyzed.
In this point (phase 3), the limitations and potentials for further development became clear and design criteria identified.
During the next phase, various ideas were generated, evaluated and repeatedly modified. Finally, a detailed model of the selected idea was produced and presented. - Inspiration
- Luminous is inspired by nature and follows ergonomic design principles. Luminous has a wide range of potential users. This is a multi-functional product which can be used in the home when listening to music, watching movies or using the game console, and furthermore, it can be utilized in conference rooms, educational environments, or shops.
I used TRIZ method for idea generation and Rhinoceros for modeling almost 20 different concept
It creates both direct and indirect lighting. Moreover, while the wireless speakers in existing audio systems essentially require power and wiring, (only the emission of sound is done wirelessly), but "Luminous" simulates 3D sound without the need for installing multiple speakers around the place and provides a fully wireless audio system and this has a huge impact on the beauty of the environment.

This function improves the efficiency of energy use, especially in rainy and cloudy days when the intensity of sunlight is constantly changing.
