About Liyue New Furniture
Liyue is an armchair that combines Chinese furniture traditions with a Bauhaus-inspired form. The design is drawn from ancient Chinese ritual and music culture and reflects its sense of order and rhythm. The structure of traditional wooden seats is retained, while modern materials allow the chair to fit into contemporary interiors. Recyclable polypropylene and polyamide parts are shaped by computer-controlled machining. The firm curved backrest supports the body and suits people of different sizes. The chair measures 550 by 450 by 750 mm.
Haonan Zhang's Liyue New Furniture exemplifies the ongoing dialogue between Eastern design heritage and contemporary global aesthetics, presenting a seating solution that balances visual poetry with functional intelligence. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of form language, employing a distinctive horseshoe-shaped backrest that may evoke traditional seating archetypes while reinterpreting them through thoroughly modern material expressions and manufacturing sensibilities. The designer's choice to present the chairs as a chromatic pair, one in pristine white and one in authoritative black, suggests an appreciation for how identical forms can convey markedly different emotional registers through surface treatment alone. Technical accomplishment is evident in the seamless integration of the curved polymer or metal backrest with the precisely engineered tubular leg structure, achieving visual lightness while maintaining structural integrity. The neutral gray upholstered seats function as chromatic bridges, providing both physical comfort and visual rest within the composition. Zhang appears to engage with questions central to contemporary furniture design: how might traditional forms be honored while serving present-day spatial and aesthetic requirements? The restrained material palette and elimination of superfluous ornamentation align this work with minimalist design philosophies that privilege essential form over decorative elaboration. The chairs' proportions suggest careful consideration of human ergonomics, with the embracing curve of the backrest appearing to offer both physical support and psychological comfort. Viewers might contemplate how the pairing of identical forms in contrasting values creates a meditation on unity and difference, sameness and distinction, inviting reflection on how color alone transforms our perception of objects and spaces.
