About Linear Refraction Desk and Ambiance light
Linear Refraction is a desk and ambient light created for a design hotel in Lishui, China. The lamp joins a linear LED tube to a crystal glass base sourced from Pujiang. The base holds a colored inner layer that refracts white light into many hues, recalling a rainbow. Two modes of use are offered. Placed horizontally, the lamp serves as an adjustable reading light. Set upright, the light glows within the crystal base to create a colorful atmosphere. A touch control switches and dims the light, and the last setting is remembered.

- Production Technology
- The material of the light base is made from the highest quality crystal with a colorful sticker inner. The crystal is from Pujiang, the crystal kingdom of China. All the material of the light tube is made in Taiwan and assembled manually.
- Design Challenge
- Considering the different demands of travelers and the product’s duration, artist Ray Teng Pai spent much time adjusting the details of the product. From designing to making, the design team not only creates original design style and art performance but also merges sensibility and rationality to realize practical value. Challenging the limit of manufacturing art and fuse traditional craft and unique conception, Ray practiced the aesthetic value of light and shadow.
- Project Duration
- The project started in October 2019 in Taipei and finished in March 2020 in Lishui.
- Operation Flow
- There are two modes of usage. When laying down the linear light horizontally, it becomes an adjustable reading light. When sitting it up vertically, the light illuminates from within the crystal glass base to create a colorful fantasy atmosphere.
A light touch at the end of the linear tip simply turns on or off the light. A long touch, however, can brighten or dim a given light. The Linear light remembers the previous setting, thus it always lights up smoothly at your expected volume. - Inspiration
- The design of the Linear Refraction series is inspired by the phenomenon known as the rainbow.
The crystal glass base embodies the water vapor in the air, refracting white light into a multitude of colors. The inspired use of this crystal clear design makes the Linear Refraction - Desk Light an exquisite art installation of both form and function. - Image Credits
