About Lafonce Maxone Commercial Complex

Lafonce Maxone is a cultural and commercial complex located in Xi'an, China. The interior brings together a shopping mall, a bookstore and other business types under a single book theme. Two artistic book walls, 18 metres high and 240 metres long in total, hold hundreds of thousands of books and are built with steel structures and transparent glass. The glass allows light to spread into the void area of the building. The original structure had been left unused for three years, and its open volume was kept to create a strong sense of space.

Situated within the evolving tradition of experiential retail architecture, Hansheng Cheng's Lafonce Maxone Commercial Complex represents a sophisticated synthesis of spatial drama and commercial function that elevates the act of shopping into an immersive cultural encounter. The design appears to draw upon historical precedents of theatrical interior spaces, perhaps evoking the overwhelming sensory richness of baroque church interiors or the crystalline wonder cabinets of Renaissance collectors, while translating these references through a distinctly contemporary material and technological vocabulary. The faceted metallic ceiling treatment demonstrates remarkable technical achievement, with each panel precisely angled to create kaleidoscopic reflections that seemingly dissolve the boundary between built surface and infinite space, suggesting influences from parametric design methodologies while maintaining an organic quality that resists purely algorithmic aesthetics. The central diamond-shaped skylight aperture functions as both practical daylighting strategy and symbolic gesture, introducing natural light as a precious material filtered through geometric armature, perhaps referencing the traditional role of overhead illumination in sacred architecture while recontextualizing it for secular commercial purpose. The integration of extensive shelving systems along the perimeter walls transforms functional display requirements into architectural expression, creating rhythm and texture that activates the vertical surfaces while providing wayfinding orientation within the expansive volume. Multiple levels connected by elegant staircases invite exploration and discovery, establishing a promenade architecturale that rewards movement through space with continuously shifting perspectives and reflections. The material palette balances warm metallic tones against cool stone surfaces, creating temperature contrast that enlivens the sensory experience while maintaining cohesive visual unity throughout the complex. Visitors might contemplate how this environment reframes commercial exchange as cultural participation, transforming retail browsing into a form of aesthetic pilgrimage through spaces that honor both merchandise and the human experience of wonder.

2. With hundreds of thousands of books placed in, the two large walls are constructed with steel structures and transparent glass, which enables people to see through and also allows the light randomly diffuse to the void area to interact with the spatial entities in various forms.
Design Challenge
The project's location doesn't enjoy large human flow volume and prosperous commerce. How to make LAFONCE MAXONE outshine other big shopping malls in Xi'an is a tough problem that needs to be solved.

Operation Flow
Through a "culture and commerce" design strategy and by taking cues from the cultural context of Xi'an, Designer created a bookstore-themed commercial and cultural complex, which leads lifestyle aesthetic experiences with multiple business forms and has successfully attracted customers in spite of the remote site. Striking and pioneering artistic book walls, which are 18m high and 240m long in total, bring a brand-new image of urban commercial space to Xi'an and even China.
Research
LAFONCE MAXONE is a trendy cultural and commercial complex, integrating shopping mall, bookstore and other functions. It can not only attract the human flow, but also promote local economic development and improve business operations of shopping centers.
Inspiration
The project is situated at an industrial area in the northern suburbs of Xi'an, which doesn't enjoy large human flow volume and prosperous commerce. According to the chief designer, it's imperative to depend on culture to go beyond geographical restrictions and gather people, because culture itself does not have geographical distance and can attract the participation of all people, thus maximizing the flow of customers. Based on such idea, the theme of "book" runs through the entire space.
