About K House Residential Design

K House is a residential interior design for a 235 square meter home in Istanbul, Turkiye. The interior was stripped back to its columns, beams and load bearing elements, then reorganized into five bedrooms and two living areas. Fragmented and dimly lit rooms were consolidated into larger, flexible spaces with improved circulation and daylight. Layered ceilings and softened junctions increase the sense of height and spatial continuity. Porcelain stone, glass and sustainably sourced wood form a calm and durable material palette.

Within the evolving discourse surrounding contemporary residential interior design, this living environment demonstrates how spatial planning, material selection, and architectural detailing converge to create environments supporting social engagement while maintaining domestic comfort and visual refinement. The design approach evidently draws upon multiple lineages including mid-century modernism's embrace of open planning and honest material expression, boutique hospitality design's sophisticated layering of functional zones within cohesive aesthetic frameworks, and Scandinavian traditions emphasizing natural materials, craft quality, and understated elegance that prioritizes enduring livability over stylistic novelty. The compositional achievement rests substantially in the successful integration of curved architectural elements, particularly the flowing ceiling plane and corresponding millwork profiles, which soften what might otherwise read as austere orthogonal volumes while establishing distinctive spatial character and guiding circulation through gentle formal suggestion rather than rigid partition. The curved vocabulary extends through custom cabinetry, shelf profiles, and furniture selections, creating visual continuity that unifies disparate functional elements within a coherent formal language. Material choreography demonstrates particular sophistication in the calibrated contrast between warm blonde oak establishing foundational presence, cream and taupe textiles providing soft transitional tones, strategic black accents delivering necessary graphic definition, and metallic highlights contributing light-reflective animation without overwhelming the subdued palette. This restrained chromatic strategy allows spatial organization and material texture to carry primary aesthetic weight while supporting rather than competing with social interaction and domestic activity. The integrated hospitality zone exemplifies how residential design increasingly incorporates programmatic elements traditionally associated with commercial or entertainment venues, domesticating the bar typology through residential scale, integrated architectural framing, and material continuity with surrounding living areas, transforming what could read as imported amenity into natural spatial extension. Lighting design layering ambient, task, and accent sources demonstrates understanding of how illumination shapes spatial perception and atmospheric quality throughout varied use scenarios, with warm color temperature selections enhancing wood tones and textile colors while contributing to overall sense of invitation and comfort. The inclusion of contemporary sculptural objects including what appears to be references to accessible contemporary art vocabularies suggests cultivation of environments where design intelligence operates across scales from architectural envelope through furnishing selections to decorative object curation, creating visual interest and conversation prompts without dominating spatial experience. How might such carefully calibrated environments reflect evolving expectations for residential spaces to accommodate both private retreat and social performance, supporting intimate family life while projecting curated identity when hosting guests, and what does the integration of hospitality-inspired elements suggest regarding contemporary negotiations between domestic privacy and designed sociability?

Production Technology
The interior was stripped back to its essential structural skeleton, with only columns, beams, and load bearing elements retained as the foundation for the design. Within this clarified framework, the plan is carefully calibrated to enhance circulation, accessibility, and spatial flow. Guided by a user-centered approach, the project balances functional precision with quiet luxury, using porcelain stone, glass, and sustainably sourced wood as architectural instruments that heighten light, transparency, and long-term spatial clarity.
Design Challenge
The projects main challenge was reorganizing a compact 235 sqm interior to achieve clear functional zoning, improved circulation and enhanced natural light. The existing plan was narrow, poorly lit, and constrained by low ceilings and exposed structural beams. The design consolidated fragmented rooms into larger, flexible living areas, improving spatial efficiency, daylight, and ventilation. Structural elements were carefully integrated and concealed without sacrificing openness, resulting in a cohesive and refined architectural language.
Project Duration
The K House project has started in October 2024 and finished in April 2025 in Istanbul Turkiye.
Operation Flow
Deger Architects designed the project as a complete architectural reconstitution rather than a renovation. Precision-driven interventions define the transformation, layered ceilings enhance vertical openness, softened junctions ensure spatial continuity, and a reprogrammed master suite improves living flow. K House expresses restrained elegance through orchestrated natural light, integrated custom furniture, Neolith porcelain flooring, and sculptural Tom Dixon lighting, culminating in a seamless dialogue between architecture and art.
Research
Prior to the design phase, an extensive research process was undertaken to inform and strengthen the projects creative direction. This phase focused on analyzing functional requirements, user lifestyle patterns and precedent projects of similar scale, examining spatial organization, circulation, materiality and atmosphere. Drawing from the calm minimalism of Far Eastern architecture and the rational logic of modern design, these influences were reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Material, light and color selections were guided by sustainability, durability and sensory impact, grounding the project in clarity and architectural coherence.
Inspiration
Inspired by the K House owners daily lifestyle, Deger Architects envisioned a contemporary, distinctive and well balanced home, prioritizing comfort and functionality. Through an iterative process, these values evolved into a refined architectural narrative. Simple in form yet striking in presence. The project is defined by luminous open tones, gentle softness, and natural materials that create a space both physically radiant and emotionally nurturing
